AT&T confirms early upgrade price changes for iPhone 4, other smartphones

Exclusive

AT&T has confirmed to BGR that it has made changes to early upgrade pricing for its smartphones. The changes impact customers who wish to upgrade to a new smartphone but are not yet eligible for an upgrade at fully discounted two-year contract prices. An imminent change to AT&T’s early upgrade pricing for smartphones was first reported on Friday by Android enthusiast blog Android Central. AT&T has now confirmed that off-contract early upgrade pricing has increased by $50 for all smartphones including the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, Windows Phones and Android devices. Pricing has increased by $150 when the aforementioned devices are purchased with a one-year agreement. ”We’ve updated our early upgrade and no commitment price points for smartphones and feature phones,” an AT&T spokesperson told BGR. “Only customers who are not yet upgrade eligible or who do not want to sign a contract are impacted. As mobile devices become more sophisticated, their cost goes up. This change reflects the increased costs, while still allowing us to offer customers the latest device before they qualify. We’re happy to discuss individual account and upgrade needs one-on-one with customers.”

“As mobile devices become more sophisticated, their cost goes up.” Bull! As technology advances, its costs usually decrease. What we’re seeing in today’s economy is inflation. The cost of food and oil is going up, so why not the cost of smartphones? But to blame it on the sophistication of the device is lame.

“Only customers who are not yet upgrade eligible or who do not want to sign a contract are impacted.”

Unlike Sprint customers, like me, whose upgrades were taken away, with no compensation, when the new Premier program changes went into effect on Friday. I could upgrade to a new phone at a new subscriber price on March 31, but not on April 1.

Which is why I now have a Thunderbolt. Bye bye Sprint.

Every one is upset how many phones do you buy out right not many I bet so how does this really hurt you just wait to your upgrade and get the phone of to ur choice with cellphones you would never have the best phone a new and better one comes out each week

I’m not sure why everyone is so angry? You know that they are refering to early upgrade pricing not the full upgrade pricing.

So for the people that don’t get it, if you aren’t fully eligible for the best possible pricing for a phone that’s when you get charged the additional cost to the upgrade price.

You know smart phone generally cost 500-700 dollars and with you’re full upgrade you are paying only .01 – $199.99. Some of you might want to educate yourselves on how this will be affecting you, because I’m pretty sure that you are getting a pretty good deal when you use your full upgrade pricing.

Last time I checked you don’t get a bomb discount for paying your monthly power bill or your rent.

Indignant comments like the ones constantly posted by consumers are the reasons why representatives all over the country, whether it be mobile, the restaurant industry, retail, sales, etc find it increasingly difficult to assist a certain type of customer. The type that doesn’t understand the services they are signing up for, let alone the part where are doing our best to accomodate you’re needs and all you want to do is complain because you are cheap and uneducated.
