Apple, Android see continued growth in U.S. smartphone market share

mobile

ComScore has released its latest report on the U.S. smartphone market, and it suggests that Apple’s share of the U.S. OEM market is growing, while Android is continuing to dominate the U.S. operating system market. Samsung remains the top mobile OEM in the United States with a 24.8% marketshare, up 0.3 percentage points from the period prior. It’s followed by LG (20.9%, no change), Motorola (16.1 percent, down .9 percentage points), RIM (8.6 percent, down .2 percentage points), and Apple (7.5%, up .9 percentage points). Given the dominance by Samsung, LG, and Motorola, it comes as no surprise that Android now has a 33% grip on the U.S. smartphone operating system market — that’s up 7 percentage points from the last report. RIM’s BlackBerry OS dropped 4.6 percentage points to a 28.9% share of the market. It’s followed by Apple’s iOS (25.2%), Microsoft’s Windows Phone (7.7%), and Palm’s webOS (2.8%). The report also found that 68.7% of mobile users use their phone for text messaging. Hit the jump for the full release.

These are awful results for Motorola. Looks like consumers are ignoring their tablet AND their phones.

locked bootloaders will do that everytime

Consumers don’t care about locked bootloaders.

You are so negative. There is no place for your pessimistic attitude on the internet.
Why no try being a little more positive for once? I think you’ll find it much more enjoyable.

well, too bad for motorola and thier atrix!

  • Bullyboyb

Funny cause statcounter shows IOS losing market share and android and wp7 gaining……someone is not telling the full story.

    Go figure.

  • http://twitter.com/homescrub homescrub

No, the title is misleading. It should read “Android sees growth, while Apple stays stagnant like a whales vagina.”.

    • Anonymous

Homescrub! Whuddup. Apple hater huh? :-) u r aware apple does not compete in the middle to low end phone range right? They build high end phones. They don’t do buy one get one deals. They don’t make 99 dollar phones that the parents buy for their kids in high school. They don’t make phones that only earn them 10 bucks profit. An article in oct 2010 said that apple has 4% of the global phone market share but 50% of the profit share. Google apple profit share and check out any of the 50 articles on it.

      • http://twitter.com/homescrub homescrub

        Android hater huh? umad.

      • Anonymous

Nope. I like all platforms. Just wanted to know if u were aware that
market share is a deceiving figure. Nokia, samsung and LG combined
sold 400 million phones first half of 2010 apple sold 17 million. But
apples share of the profits was 38% the other three. 32%. Sell high
end stuff, make more money. That’s what apple does.

        iphone 3GS = $49

      • Anonymous

Old phone With contract dumb ass. If u think it costs apple less than
100 bucks to make an iPhone 3GS then u are STILL a fucken idiot.
Getting rid of old stock at a discount in my opinion DOES NOT mean
they are trying to compete in the mid to low range market. When I call
u an idiot u can brush that off. But when 100′s of people online call
u an idiot for the shit u say, does that ever make u wonder?? Cya
        idiot.

      • Tim242

There’s no way they would still have stock two years later. They have been
still producing them fot a lower cost phone. You prove yout stupidity every
        day.

      • Anonymous

It’s only been 9 months dumbass.

      • Tim242

9 months since the 3GS came out? You are stupid.

      • Anonymous

Lol. U are a moron. Since the iPhone 4 came out. U think they stopped
ordering parts 2 years ago?? I don’t give a crap if they are selling
off an older model for a discount. Use our fucken head. U think they
still want to make 3GS phones for minimal profit? Why bother. Just
sell the iPhone 4 for a discount then. MY POINT IS APPLE DOES NOT
COMPETE IN THE MID TO LOW END MARKET. If you think otherwise then
please do everything possible to NEVER reproduce.

      • Tim242

There is no way they would still have 3GS stock, if they weren’t still
producing them. I guess you missed the memos on Apple getting ready to
produce a cheaper phone, and even prepaid. If that isn’t low end, I don’t
know what is. I’m done arguing with you. Get a life. Steve Jobs does not pay
your bills, nor does he suck your little cock.

      • Anonymous

No. I saw those. That’s in the future. All rumor. And probably for
china. But u r still missing the point. The comment I made was about
market share an why android is so far ahead now compared to apple. Do
u understand? If apple sees fit to start to compete in the mod to low
range then fine. But once again I repeat. So u can get it thru your
THICK FUCKEN SKULL. APPLE DOES NOT COMPETE IN THE MID TO LOW RANGE
        MARKET.

      • Tim242

        iphone 3GS = $49. That’s 4 for the price of two BOGO Androids…which hasn’t
        happened in months.

      • Anonymous

Lol. I guess I need to repeat it. Selling off an older model for a
discount does not in my opinion and apples opinion mean that they
compete in the mid to low range phone market. Look apple may have had
contracts to produce parts for the 3GS well past the launch of the
iPhone 4. Those might be from two years ago. Would have been smart
business. We don’t know. But until apple produces a cheaper phone and
not just discounting an older model ONCE AGAIN I HAVE TO REPEAT. APPLE
DOES NOT COMPETE IN THE MID TO LOW RANGE PHONE MARKET. HELLO!!!!! DO U
UNDERSTAND?? Just because a carrier is selling it for 49 doesn’t mean
squat. They may have a deal with them to have supplied X amount of
phones till X date and are fulfilling contracts. We don’t know. Are
they still assembling 3GS’s? probably, on a small scale. U want to
call me out on that. Fine. I admit that.

      • Tim242

The 3GS is every bit as capable as the 4…except for the ffc. They run the
same software. You’re crazy if you don’t think continuing to make them and
sell them cheap isn’t catering to low end buyers. It gets more iphones out
there for itunes and app store purchases. Android is winning because of
choice. We have the choice of carrier, hardware type, manufacturer, feature
set, screen size, customization, and much more. Choice is great. People
bought iphones in droves because that’s all the choice they had in that
class. Last year, iphone market share went from 24-25%. Android went from
9-32%. That’s 1% growth, vs 23%. Apple should have seen the writing on the
wall and licensed the OS and opened it up a bit. It’s too late now.

      • Anonymous

LOL. Ok my point ONCE AGAIN is APPLE DOES NOT >>COMPETE<< IN THE MID TO LOW
RANGE PHONE MARKET. Merriam websters dictionary defines the word compete as
*:* to strive consciously or unconsciously for an objective (as position,
profit, or a prize) *:* be in a state of rivalry
do you seriously think apple is
putting any real effort into it? Are they flooding the market with cheap
phones? Do u see iphone 3gs commercials everyday like iphone 4 commercials?
Fuck Tim plz ask a few other people what they think. Selling off an older
model of phones does not sound like a serious effort to compete. Are they in
the mid to low range market. Technically yes. Sell one phone and u r. Are
they COMPETING? no. Not their fault they make a great phone that still
operates on the latest software 2 years after releasing their product. I
don’t want to get started on android fragmentation etc etc.

If they had called some Verizon stores, they would have found the thunderbolt crushing iPhone sales.

    • Anonymous

      There is a big BUT.

Apple sells half of iPhones from its online stores. HTC not sells thunderbolt online. So you have it. And btw you write based on pure rumors.

The real effect of Verizon iPhone you are going to see in the next 2/3 reports by comscore.

Apple can reach 30% with VZ, as contracts end people will go for a Verizon iPhone.

On at&t 65% of smartphone sold are iPhones (comScore november data).

      • http://twitter.com/mimrixmike Mike

awe… a little apple fan boy got butt hurt???? it doesn’t really matter if VZW or ATT individually are selling more iCraps than android… android IS the #1 os IN THE WORLD as reported by MULTIPLE sources. Its a FACT. END OF STORY.. YOU LOSE, WE WIN, TAKE YOUR NON PERSONALIZED PIECE OF BRAINWASHED CRAP AND GO HOME. BUH BYE…

      • Anonymous

More interesting stat is apple has 6.6% of the mobile MARKET share but 50+% of the PROFIT share. U get that? Of every 100 phones sold only 6.6 are iPhones. But of every dollar earned in PROFIT for the ENTIRE mobile phone industry they are pocketing 50 cents. Like them or not EVERY company on the planet would love to have their profit margins. BUH BYE….

hahaha most oem`s dont give a crap about how many phones they sell, they care about profits, thats the bottom line, and frankly apples good at this profit game. OKAY??? Having more android doesnt mean sh@t when you have such low profit margain.
Also you work for google? Cuz you dont win when more android phones tablets are sold google wins
        Dumb@ss

I don’t really go in a race to see who has the bigger penis. You do.

I only noted, in a polish way, that in the US (because in this post we are speaking about US and not “the world”) iPhone has been available only on at&t and on at&t (iPhone and Android in the catalog) people have choosen iPhone by 65%. It’s data.

Now iPhone is on Verizon too and personally I wouldn’t surprise if iPhone grew in the next months. Android is on 4+ operator, iPhone on 1 only. So we will have more fair data with the Verizon thing.

Anyway, I don’t use an OS simply because it has the majority of the market. I use the OS that I prefer, no matter how is its marketshare. I only reported some hard data, that’s why you are angry with lots of Caps Locks.

        Grew up.

  • http://twitter.com/mimrixmike Mike

what i want to know is where is HTC in all this?? are they REALLY not even n the top?

    • Anonymous

HTC don’t have an online store. Apple sells half of iPhones through that, so you can’t match them in this way.

BTW, comScore is referring about february, and you’re speaking about a “rumor” appeared march.

  • Eric

These numbers are so fudged its not funny. Btw wheres HTC?

    • Anonymous

The numbers and the article talk about two different things. As I understand, the numbers are for all mobile subscribers (including “dumb” phones) while the article talks about market share for smart phones only. Something is wrong here.

  • Anonymous

The beat goes on… What else is new… Android FTW

While Android is gaining market share, but I am surprise HTC didn’t make it to the list. HTC probably pumps out more Android smartphones than anyone else.

  • Booboolala2000

.02% growth vs. 7% growth, laughable.

    • Steve Hillshire

How dare you say that! :) When the stats were in Apple’s favor, all the fanboys gloated month after month. Now the stats that have become “the gold standard” in reporting market share are “fudged”. LMFAO!

      • Anonymous

He made a valid point. Rim products have been lacking last few years but they still have a relatively high market share because of mid to low end phones. Nokia I think sold 240 million phones in 2010 but look at their stock price. Apple deals in the high end phone market. Big profit margins. The fanboy stuff for apple or android or whoever is definitely annoying. I try to avoid that garbage.

Hey, it’s really pathetic how comments again turn into Apple vs. The Rest of the World.

First, numbers show, once again, Android did very good, but could not hurt Apple’s share.

Second, it shows how strong Apple really is: ONE company with ONE (current) product has 25% of the (smartphone) market, against 33% for numerous companies with dozens of products. And that ONE company makes both hardware and software.

Third, yes, this is free world (most of it, at least) and you have right to hate anyone for anything, but ignoring facts is not a good way to earn respect.

    • Anonymous

Describing the word “current” to describe the iPhone 4 is being extraordinarily generous. Also, Apple isn’t selling one phone. They are also selling the 3GS (not even figuring in all the iterations of the iPhone 4 with different memory alotments. Yes, those are different models of phones).

And iSheep fail to realize that maybe that’s what people like about Android: you can choose whatever phone you want.
