Microsoft files complaint against Google with European Commission

Microsoft has filed a complaint with the European Commission in regards to Google’s search operations in the European Union. “Our filing today focuses on a pattern of actions that Google has taken to entrench its dominance in markets for online search and search advertising to the detriment of the European consumers,” said Microsoft’s general counsel, Brad Smith. “Google has engaged in a broadening pattern of walling off access to content and data that competitors need to provide search results to consumers and to attract advertisers.” Smith added that Google has a 95% grip on the search market in Europe and that the company has aimed to stop any other firms from creating a competitive search alternative. Smith also argued that Google, since acquiring YouTube in 2006, has restricted other search engines from properly accessing YouTube videos for search results.

Similarly, Smith said Google doesn’t allow Windows Phone 7 devices to properly search YouTube content — although it does allow the iPhone and Android smartphones to do so. Google also reportedly blocks access to content owned by book publishers, restricts advertisers from accessing their own data, and blocks websites in Europe from distributing search boxes from competing search engines. “We readily appreciate that Google should continue to have the freedom to innovate,” Smith said. “But it shouldn’t be permitted to pursue practices that restrict others from innovating and offering competitive alternatives.  That’s what it’s doing now.  And that’s what we hope European officials will assess and ultimately decide to stop.” Hit the jump for Brad Smith’s full blog post.

    Oh the irony!

Maybe if Microsoft had an actual OS, they wouldn’t have so many technical difficulties with a simple search engine. And, maybe if they invested more time on OS development, and not those DAMN USELESS HIDEOUS TILES, they, too, could benefit from Googles web capabilities.

On a sidenote: doesn’t “BING” utilize the same tactics that they’re complaining about; oh, I forgot, no one is using BING!

How ironic, hello pot its kettle calling. So I guess for Microsoft if you can’t buy the company, then file a lawsuit instead

Microsoft seriously, you are lucky you don’t get a counter suit filed on you… Windows is the operating system on over 90% of the worlds computer. Everyone of them comes loaded with Internet Explorer, that cannot be deleted, and Bing is the default search engine on IE. Google’s chrome in contrast does not come preloaded and they ask you which search engine you would like to use. Microsoft has also admitted copying Google’s search results. Next Microsoft makes WP7 and makes it so Bing is the hardware/software integrated search engine that you cannot delete. They’ve also stuck deals with certain Verizon phones to place Bing as the undeletable search engine on Android phones even.

Bing indexes a little over half of YouTube videos, whats the problem here. Also WP7 doesn’t even support flash or WEBM, if they wanted the full YouTube experience they could just go and make those technologies compatible on their phones, done. Also YouTube has a YouTube API you just aren’t allowed to use YouTube’s logo or trademarks.

“Google also reportedly blocks access to content owned by book publishers” that’s hilarious. Google took the time to scan millions of books and run them through OCR software and RECAPTCHA and now Microsoft is saying All your data r belongs to us. Microsoft if you want the book content go scan it yourself, quit whining that Google isn’t sharing their work with you.

These lawsuits are all going down because at the end of the day Google lives in an environment of perfect competition, the internet, users can leave them in less than one second. Microsoft will also have to show that Google is hurting consumers, good luck with that one.

Wow, Microsoft must really be hurting. Its Windows Phone sales must be horrible. Microsoft has just been doing a lot of whining lately.

Well if you can just stop stealing search results from Google, they might not file criminal charges against you thieves. Until then, you are lucky that they are just guarding their intellectual property from you thieves the way I would shoot any thief who is trying to break in.
