RadioShack said to require AppleCare, case purchases with iPad 2 [updated]

Exclusive

As we confirmed yesterday, Apple’s iPad 2 went on sale in 500 RadioShack locations across the country on Tuesday. Considering the tablet’s limited supply among Apple Store locations and other third-party retailers, however, we wondered how much inventory Apple might be willing to spare for the various RadioShack locations set to offer the device this morning. BGR has confirmed that several RadioShack locations in the New York metropolitan area received single-digit shipments, and every store we spoke to this morning was sold out. More interesting than the low-volume sellouts, perhaps, is the claim by a BGR tipster that the store he visited refused to sell the iPad 2 unless customers also agreed to purchase AppleCare protection plans and an iPad 2 cases along with their tablets. RadioShack salespeople at the New York City location he visited stated that the store was required to sell AppleCare and a case with each iPad 2 for today only. Despite a customer’s position in line, he or she was allegedly not permitted to purchase an iPad without the pricey add-ons.

UPDATE: We have confirmed that it is not RadioShack’s policy to require the purchase of AppleCare or any accessories such as cases with the purchase of an iPad 2.

Thanks, Giancarlo

It also happened in the Bronx, I asked for the 16GB and she said “You know it’s 670 plus tax right? I can’t sell it to you without the case and the applecare.” I blinked, said “No thanks,” put my wallet back in my pocket and left.

Just called the Radio Shack in Savannah and the store manager refused to comment on how customers felt about being required to purchase Apple Care with their iPad 2.

No… this is how Radio Shack gets their retarded employees to sell. Radio Shack honestly should have been shut down a long time ago. They have no customer service and a horrible selection of sub-standard products. I have no idea how one of the worst companies in America can stay afloat.

It seems like in addition to general low supply it’s even worse if you want a 64 GB Wi-Fi and 3G At&T. I have one on preorder at Best Buy. I am 4th in line and have waited two weeks to get one with no luck.

Just bought a black 32g wifi at a radioshack in Los Angeles. Rep suggested apple care and case, I declined. They didn’t care. They only had TWO in stock though, and I was the first one in line…

But they are….. I was just there and witnessed it first hand. Of course the “official statement” is different. It has been their practice for years. Management informed me that they would not sell the iPad 2 without Applecare. Management’s reasoning – Apple requires then to maintain a minimum 70% Applecare attachment rate otherwise they would lose the right to participate as a certified retailer.

Apple sent 1 ipad2 for every RadioShack store to sell. And there’s like 100 people lining up at each store, lol.

Just purchased an ipad2 and was “forced” to purchase applecare as well.

If this isn’t official policy as they state, what should I do? Do I just go into the store tomorrow and
say, hey I wanted to return the applecare and give them back that little CD case?

Should I try going above them and contacting somebody higher up?

    Thanks

This is Radio Shack policy. THEY DO REQUIRE you to buy pricey add ons. When the Iphone 4 came out, we went in for the trade in program, for $200.00 rebate in trading in a 3gs and they guaranteed an Iphone 4. After much negotiation, they said they could NOT discount the phone in NJ without us buying a case. I then asked why would I buy a case when Apple was giving away FREE CASES because of the antenna at the time, they said I required it.

Reluctantly, I agreed and they said ok. Then they said WIPE your phone, so I wiped it. ONLY AFTER ERASING the 3gs phone trade in, did they then punch in our telephone # and said we were not eligible for an upgrade. WE HAD WIPED ALL OF OUR APP game settings and everything.

They werent APOLOGETIC EITHER! They just turned around and took their iphone 4 back AND the REQUIRED case ( and they sell CHEAP aftermarket cases too at full retail) I guarantee they are requiring people to buy ipad 2 cases no matter what corporate says, they are lying!

As a former shack store manager, this is what RS District Managers call “Customer Service”. If your store and your associates are not selling accessories, extended warranties, taking email addresses, etc, the store managers are supposed to coach, counsel and eventually fire associates and the district managers do the same with the store managers. So, it has become common practice throughout the company to require customers to purchase these items as a package deal instead of using coaching associates to use selling skills to add on to sales.

Yes they are and its becoming harder to sell now because you have to worry about keeping your job if you don’t sell good smh

I was one of the lucky ones to get an iPad 2 at “The Shack”. They made me buy 2 accesories and applecare.
I didnt make a stink and after getting to work I promptly called Radio Shack Corporate customer care. They said it wasnt there policy and that I would be able to return the accesories.
They said I would have to return and repurchase the iPad if I wanted a refund for applecare.
So I called Apple and they issued me a full refund for Applecare after trying to tell me what a good value it was.
Then I brought back teh accesories to THE SHACK.
I kind of felt bad for them because Apple totally screwed the with only 5 iPads per store.
What a complete joke this whole iPad 2 launch was. Why give these retailers any product when they cant even keep any in stock in there own stores for more than 2 minutes after they open.

  • Tonyjr418

Yes it is true, I work in radio shack, it is up to the manager and a supervisor of the district on how to sell the ipad2. if you call corporate they will tell you the same thing

  • Kudo

I will buy a Playbook and with the savings from not buying Applecare and a case, I will also by a hooker.
    Playbook + Hooker > iPad + Applecare + case

It is absolutely true that they required purchase of these extras, even after standing in line for several hours. On top of that, they were @$$holes about the whole thing. Horrible business practice, clearly taking advantage of the situation. I have never been into a Radio Shack before this, and I never will again. Way to blow your big chance for potential new customers, geniuses!
