Google Music service being tested internally

mobile

Google is said to be testing its new Google Music service internally, according to sources speaking to CNET. Google had originally planned to make an announcement during the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas earlier this month, but it apparently still needs to iron out some of the details with the four major record labels. It is expected that Google Music will be a cloud-based system where users can stream, buy, and store music online for access from their Android smartphones or tablets, as well as from their computers. It’s still unclear what the pricing structure will be like, but we’re definitely hyped for this to launch.

can’t wait. I want the movie service live first though, considering there’s already Rhapsody, AmazonMP3 and 7Digital for music..

    • Lucid

I know- the movie service is way more important in my opinion too!!!

    Awwww yeahhhhhh

Hopefully they provide files in FLAC and not the lossy mp3 garbage everyone else provides.

I predict that any cloud based music locker type service that the music industry will actually agree to will only work if you have purchased DRM’ed copies of their music online. The odds that they will allow cloud based access to anything that you buy on CD are pretty much slim to none.

Enlighten me…what is the obsession with FLAC? These appear as huge as a wav file and besides being true to the original, are not the least bit practical for portable devices. Or are you using these for PC use and using something like MediaMonkey to convert them into mp3s for portable consumption?

      • Anonymous

Well, for starters, a FLAC file isn’t as huge as a WAV file; there is some compression being done. The main reason to have a FLAC file is to have something that’s true to the original. It’s a lot more relevant if you’ve got quality headphones or a speaker setup. If you’re using the stock headphones from your iPod, then go ahead and use a 128 kbps MP3; you won’t hear all the subtle differences anyway.

        /not a FLAC user
        //knows what it’s good for

      • Anonymous

Not really obsessed with FLAC, if truth be known in my opinion WAV or AIFF is just as good. The truth is when using a lossless file it sounds way better especially if you’re using good sounding audio equipment. For instance if you were listening to tunes on your PC using a dedicated DAC, headphone amp and Sennheiser 595 or better model you would notice a huge difference. Using source material of 128 to 320 kbs mp3′s every single blemish would stand out as well as a tinniness on the bottom end of the bass as well as less detailed mids and treble. Now if your source material was a lossless format you’ll notice far better response on the bottom bass end and a far more lusher more pleasing sound in the mids and better details in the treble. Don’t take my word for it do yourself a favor and try listening to nothing but lossless files for a month or two then go back to low bit mp3′s and see if you notice a difference. My money says you probably will. As for mobile well again it depends on your equipment. If you’re using 20 dollar WalMart ear buds or Apple ear buds then it really doesn’t matter what your source file is. If you’re using 200 dollar plus IEM’s or a set of cans such as AKG 271 MKII’s or Grado SR60i’s on your player then you will notice a huge difference in sound quality. Your source files make a huge difference when using good sounding gear. The main rule when audio is involved is if you put garbage in your will get garbage out but put good sounding lossless in then your gear will shine like a jewel when it comes to audio.

It’s safe to say no matter what they do it will be better than what Apple does.

      • Anonymous

Norm you are a true thespian. I wish you were the CEO of Google. With you at the helm and Goofan as the vice president of operations the world would fall before the onslaught of the Droid empire.

Flac sucks. MP3 is the standard so deal with it. You can’t tell the difference between flac and mp3 so stop crying.

Another dumb comment from the peanut gallery. So which one are you? iSheep or Fandroid?

        P.S.
Unless you’re running crappy buds or cans yes you can.

  • Anonymous

If they sync to offline mp3 players as well this could be HUGE, and in one fell swoop, correct everything wrong with with iTunes.

    • Anonymous

It already does, if you backport the Honeycomb music player to Gingerbread. All of the songs on my phone are currently synced to somewhere in the cloud (I wish I knew where so I could sync my entire desktop library as well), and I can set it to sync down if I put in a new SD card and set it to store locally.

And so begins the end of iTunes! In the spirit of google’s spectacular amazingness music will be free and open! I won’t have to pay for music ever again!

iToones is for the technically challenged, who follow because they’re incapable of leading or thinking independently and, thus, they find some semblance of validation especially since, in most cases, they need to compensate for their shortcummings’ of 0.30 iBlank-shooters!

You’re up early hermano! Me, well taking the kids to Disney.

Did you get your pocket money today from your technically challenged grandma, whose basement you currently reside in.

      • Anonymous

Listen assb10yr4, don’t you dare talk that way about PAPITO, his grandma or basement (where a lot of goofan aka apple hater meetings occur)! Or God help me, I’ll banish you from the web forever! As members of the board of the goofan (aka apple hater) nation we have a close relationship with Larry and Sergei and with that, since we have all your information can make sure you can never ever use the web again!

So apologize to PAPITO right now!! You have 1 day to comply!

Google google…..we taking over, one sector at a time …really nice

  • Anonymous

Is this music for the post-PC era? lol

    • Anonymous

ZAPATITO, it’s called the google era. An era where google will dominate all and safeguard all our personal information for us.

  • 77Pat

This is why I am holding off on Subsonic for now…

  • Anonymous

I guess their initial plan to just give the music away for free didn’t pan out. Imagine that. At any rate, based on past experience, Google’s latest attempt to follow Apple into an industry will result in a less polished, user-hostile service which will generate less revenue and profit than Apple’s offering. When it comes to churning out beta level products, Google is as predictable as death and taxes.

    • Booboolala2000

You have zero perspective. You do know that itunes is going to be an app available soon on other platforms too don’t you? Or didn’t you get that memo? Everything is going to the cloud, google is just getting their first and giving the record labels what they want, instead of stagnation like itunes is seeing.

      • Booboolala2000

        Get over there.

    • Qnx

iTunes is such a piece of shit that even BlackBerry integrates better with it than an iPhone.

Cloud is the future…Apple is falling behind.

    • Anonymous

Wait, you haven’t been blocked yet? Interesting… Usually they take care of you educated trolls before the ignorant ones, but you seem to still be kicking. You and Goofan, still over here being dumbasses. You’re like Windows Mobile, we want you to just go away, and most people have forgotten you, but you still exist, and it annoys us.
Face it, Google is gaining on Apple. Google will never overtake iPod or Macs, and can only match iPhone. Google is taking over markets that Apple sucks in, iTunes, Ping, MobileMe, Safari, ect.

      • Anonymous

“Google is taking over markets that Apple sucks in”

Unfortunately for Google, the markets Apple doesn’t “suck” in are the ones were all the money is made.

Also, the fact that it took you 100 words to counter my comment says more about you and your issues than it does me.

        Cheers.

        You are just priceless!

      • Anonymous

You really are priceless. Unlike you apparently, I can type fast. The fact that you counted the number of words in my comment says more about you and your issues than it does mine.
        Now, scurry away.

      • Anonymous

Hey dude/dudette next time just save yourself some time and type baaahhhhhhh. Now be a nice little brain dead sheep and go quietly chew your cud in the corner. If your real good there’s a nice cool pitcher of cool aid in your immediate future.

      • Anonymous

You’re calling me a fanboy?! I’m like the exact opposite of one, I hate and love all companies. I’m writing this right now from my Droid 2, but I wrote the first comment from my MacBook this morning on the train. And at home I have my PC running Windows 7. I don’t have an iPod or iOS thing, but that’s because I don’t like them. I buy what I want, and Google Music I find better than iTunes. That makes me a brain dead sheep?

  • Bringit

Sounded good until this – “where users can stream, buy, and store music online for access from their Android smartphones or tablets”.

    no thanks.

  • GinaDee

I like Spotify. I hope this is similar where our monthly subscription will allow us to listen on any device we want to capable of running the software. I would dump my $50 annual Slacker subscription in a heartbeat.

More garbage coming from Google. What happened to Google TV? Is it working yet?

What happend to Apple Pippin, Motorola ROKR and Apple Newton?

      • Michael Scrip

They got trumped by the iPod, iPhone and iPad…

This isn’t the Apple of the 80′s… ya know…

      • Booboolala2000

Feels like the same apple to me. My Google TV is awesome. Use it all the time. And in a few weeks when the android market comes, even better.

  • Raygun

IMO bring back vinyl or release music on Blu-ray. Music today needs quality, quality in the reproduction and in the content.

  • Anonymous

im assuming nothing but awesome…Probably will allow you to play tracks in your collection from the browser

  • n00btastic

I just hope it is as wildly successful as Google TV. (tee hee hee)

  • rudyy50

gee, it’s like you guys have no way of listening to music now.
google should spend some effort into fixing some of the many problems being complained about in forum after forum after forum.

  • http://www.nomoredupes.com/ Mia Anderson

    This is such great news.

So, is this google music be like the other music streaming sites, but only better?

And I agree with the previous comments here, I would definitely want the movie service too!

Oh, Google is just making the web a better place!
