Torture tests show iPad 2 glass much stronger than original iPad [video]

Tablets

Despite being 27% thinner, a series of stress tests show that the glass covering Apple’s iPad 2 display is significantly stronger and more flexible than the glass used on the original iPad. The team at Apple product repair shop iFixYouri took it upon themselves to put glass display covers from the original iPad and the iPad 2 through a series of abusive stress tests, and the results are pretty remarkable. We’ve already spoiled the ending but watching the iPad 2 glass survive these torture tests is pretty impressive to say the least. Hit the break for the video and please, don’t try this at home.

Another example of Apple defying the laws of physics. Steve Jobs should be in jail.

Not sure, but is that tempered glass…
If it is tempered glass like the iphone 4, then it’s gonna be strong in the middle, but shatter prone when hit from the sides.

Testing the strength of the glass from the centre does little…
After all, your ipad will unlikely fall and hit the ground face down flat.

If the iPad ever ends up bending like that the screen is your least worry. It may be strong when bending, but – like you said – if hit from the side or even directly on it will break, as the hit doesn’t test flexibility, but “shatter-proofness” if you know what I mean/

whats up with the dots all over dudes arm. weird.

Wondering that too, tattoo or device particles. I’d like to see them try and break the Apple guys glass eye

Never ever stronger than any android device. Android itself, yes the OS, makes the glass stronger. That folks, is the power of openness and freedom. Try that Apple!

      you are so stupid ..

    • Myxilplic

Yeah, I agree with the openess of Android OS. except, maybe the 50 Apps they found that broadcast your personnal information. Oh. I forgot……the horrible battery life. Or just maybe the jerky operations. Lest I forget, it’s just a cheap (plasticky) copy of an iPhone.

Meh who cares about a bend test. Who bends their iPad’s like that? They should do a drop test, aka drop stuff on the glass and see what breaks it easiest. Or if the new glass is less apt to break from stuff falling on it.

I can already tell you why the iPad 2 glass SEEMS more strong… The wooden block moves significantly more than it did with the iPad 1. Meaning, if there is a relax of the tension of course it will seem it is more flexible and not gonna shatter like the one which had nothing but high tension.

    That is some crazy glass

iPad 2 Glass is stronger than the original iPad

      Very astute.

This tests proves that my iPad2 won’t shatter like my original iPad did when I shuffle them next time. I mean everyone plays spades with their iPad’s right? Aces high bitches…..

What a complete fu*king waste of time. Ooooooo imagine that – tempered glass can flex without breaking. What next? A test to prove 1080p is indeed crisper than 480i?

  • QNX Please

What a stupid test… big deal it a more flexible? On a rigid body that makes absolutely ZERO difference. What matters is how easily is shatters on side or front on impacts (not bending) and how scratchproof it is.

  • RobertSeattle

Is their an “App” to tell you you are hitting the screen too hard? I need one for my 5 year old… :-)

Good! Finally, an answer to the question that nobody asked.

I just wish the video was of higher quality… Sorry that was low even for me. The 2MP camera jab is just bad. I like how the entire video was show with his MAC and his iPad

A thinner material usually means that it can bend more before it breaks. Take a 1/8 sheet of plywood vs a 3/4 sheet of plywood. The 1/8 sheet will flex more…but I would argue that its weaker.

Better test for a screen would be fracture toughness (i.e. sharpy test)

I must admit the iPad is pretty cool, but don’t twist the facts…just saying

Didn’t expect to hear the Reel Big Fish for the video’s music. Caught me off guard.

I’m not sure how much real scientific work is behind these tests, but they sure prove a point.

this test is really stupid and usless. why would you bend your ipad in that way???? and the dudes spots on his arm are freaking weird.
