Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to get Android 2.3 Gingerbread update

mobile

Sony Ericsson announced on its blog that it will update unbranded versions of the Xperia X10 to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) in the second or third quarter of this year. That’s a pretty stunning announcement, considering Sony Ericsson had said earlier that it had no plans to update the Xperia X10 beyond Android 2.1 (Eclair). The company says it will alert customers at a later point in time if it ever plans to roll-out the update to carrier-branded Xperia X10 devices, but we seriously doubt it’ll ever hit the AT&T Xperia X10. Hit the jump for a list of some changes users will see when the Gingerbread update rolls out.

Sony Ericsson notes that the following changes will be made once Android 2.3 is applied to a current Android 2.1 Xperia X10:

  • The current plan is that the Xperia X10 will get the Android standard Camera user interface and therefore features like e.g. face recognition, smile shutter etc will be lost.
  • Moxier is replaced by the gingerbread native EAS functionality.
  • Mediascape is being replaced by the media experience widgets and music player included in our new 2011 products.
  • DRM keys for protected content on your phone will be lost in the upgrade process.
  • The Sony Ericsson Backup and Restore client is not supported in the Gingerbread version and will therefore be lost.
  • Support for bi-directional languages will be reduced compared to the latest version of the 2.1 version of the Xperia X10.

So, truthfully, it’s the carriers that hold up the updates?

And, it can be said [again] that AT&T FAILS again, and again, and again!!

I feel for you. It seems like all AT&T care is the iPhone.

BB users here, I end up installing BB updates via leaks instead of the “official update”

      • Booboolala2000

AT&T likes the iphone because they have nothing to do with updates.

AT&T likes the iTurd because, otherwise, if it were not for the iSheep AT&T&T a.k.a. CinguCrapp would not have a subscriber base.

Who would have thought Sony would get the memo?

  • Bringit

    Fragmentation.

    • Steve Hillshire

That’s right. If its not done like Steve does it, its wrong. FYI, nobody *cares* if there is fragmentation except bloggers and iFreaks such as yourself. Despite your bleak views on Android, its still kicking your iOS *** all day long and will continue for years to come. For what you do not know or understand is the propellent behind Android. Now go run along and play with Stevie and do everything he tells you to do.

      • Bringit

Just because Android run phones sell like McDonalds cheese burgers ($.99 cent special plus a happy toy with your purchase!) does not at all make it better. Clearly that is difficult for you to understand. But if you’d put down the McNuggets and special sauce for a minute – you’d see that quality wins over quantity. Now run along and go change your drooiiiidd theme – about the only thing it’s good for.

As someone who actually owns both iOS and Android devices, I think I have a little more to go on here than a rabid iFan who is unencumbered by the clue process. Your retarded comparisons show your true lack of knowledge of anything Android. Apple makes a great device but its “evolution” since the 3GS has just been playing catch up with what already existed on Android devices. Of course you wouldn’t know that because that isn’t something that Steve tells the sheep.

Yeah, Retina display -which is awesome, certainly came from an Android first. System-wide spell check too. Heck, was’t the iPad basically just a tweaked (and slightly larger) version of a Droid? The software rotation lock too, every Android device I’ve touched definitely had a very clear orientation lock and a folder system for app mgmt!

I don’t think Apple “plays catch-up” in the traditional sense. They do it, but on closer to a 2-3 year basis. As I look back on their product roadmap, it seems clear they really work from a roadmap…the basic model for the next two years is mapped out, if a new tech is “mature” enough (aka, cheap enough and battery-efficient enough) it gets added otherwise it’s omitted for another cycle. For example, Apple didn’t include a 4g chipset last year, probably won’t this year, because their not optimized enough (recycling the 3g argument from the first iPhone) so when they finally do it, although many android phones already have it, you’ll call it catch-up instead of roadmap.

      • Steve Hillshire

Actually edoug, Android does/had folders for apps. How many Android devices have you actually touched? The retina display is awesome after having 320 x 480 on previous models while android had 480 x 854 res phones. So really, its leap frog. The iPhone wasn’t first with a front facing camera. It took 4 generations to get wallpaper so at least the background didn’t look like every other iPhone in the world. But 4 generations to get something as basic as wallpaper could be called a roadmap I suppose. There were more important things to fix first like all the dropped calls. Ironically the iPhone 4 only claims one more dropped call per 100 than the 3GS. What a remarkable roadmap they’ve got on call quality…

Two: a samsung intercept for a out 3 weeks running 2.1 and an lg optimus for a month.

I generally liked the optimus, would have kept it but was disappointed with some rough edges in use and in the camera. I never “found” making a folder for apps…my mistake.

I never claimed the front camera was apple, I knew better. By honestly wallpaper over system-wide spellcheck which wasn’t there in 2.2 at least? Custom lockscreen (from day one) was enough for me to tell my phone from everyone else’s, but hey to each there own.

      • Bringit

Want fries with that? And “retarded”? Really? What an ignorant idiot.

      • Steve Hillshire

Perhaps if you understood the English language a little better you wouldn’t call someone ignorant for using a word that obviously you think has only one meaning.

I do find it humorous that you asked if I want fries with that. Does that come naturally from saying it all day?

‘We’re going to update to the latest Android, cause we listen to our customer base! … almost a year later… and this is just an announcement of what’s to come in probably another half year…. if your carrier is nice to you.’

To all those who haven’t moved on I ask: Why?

    • Kab0b87

The Reason Lots of people haven’t moved on is money…. I Dished out 200 bucks for this phone on a contract. Would i love to get a Nexus S absolutely can i afford it? Absolutely Not. I live in the real world and have real bills to pay. So when my contract is up and i can get a discount then i will upgrade to the latest and greatest till then i Rock my x10 which i have no problem with.

It’s great how even something like this evokes the age-old battle between iGeeks and DroidNerds

    Dudes!
iPhone is perfect for peeps that want something that works outta the box and who don’t want to customize everything possible!!!!
Android is perfect for people who tinker with everything and WANT to customize everything possible!!!!!!
Blackberry is still the Smartphone for the person who hates Smartphones.

I’m an Infastructure Analyst, and this is what I tell clients who ask me what the diff is.

    • Steve Hillshire

Then there are a lot of people in the US that must want to tinker with their phones! I think that comparison has been proven wrong now that more smart phones come with Android than iOS. I might have believed your comparison in 2009 but in 2011, with Android being the dominant smart phone OS and outnumbering iOS in every way, I would not agree with the comparison now.
