ATRIX 4G and Inspire 4G will get HSUPA next month

mobile

BGR has confirmed with AT&T that both the Motorola ATRIX 4G and the HTC Inspire 4G will receive software updates in April that will enable HSUPA. The confirmation follows a report on Friday from enthusiast blog DroidMatters.com, which points out a posting to the same effect on AT&T’s Facebook page. A Motorola representative stated earlier this week that the company was working on an update for AT&T’s ATRIX 4G due for release in April, but he stated that the update would not enable HSUPA. He was apparently mistaken, though his comment on the matter remains live on Motorola’s forum. ATRIX 4G and Inspire 4G owners have been very vocal about the lack of true “4G” compatibility in the devices, and it looks like AT&T is finally preparing to remedy the situation. AT&T has not yet announced further details surrounding the software updates or a timeline for their distribution.

WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THE DOWNLOAD SPEEDS?? They are also PATHETIC

    • Generatione

I agree. I tested it at the store and it did not appear to be any faster than my 3GS, and it was indeed connected to “4G.” was gonna dumb my old iPhone for one of these but wth with the shitty scrolling?

      • Whoareu

Do you even know if you where in a 4G area? The phone doesn’t show if your in any G, it shows H+ no matter if your in 3G or 4G, so you my friend are probably wrong

      • Generatione

Read my post. I verified I was 4g area before hand

      • Whoareu

Well actually you said it was connected to “4G”. Whats your proof? I explained my proof that one cannot tell just by looking at the phone. Where were you?

Turns out that upload affects download speeds.

      • numetheus

HSUPA isn’t enabled! Of course it’s going to be slow still. Upload speed effects how fast you download.

I’m just glad I didn’t get either of these. Verizon is beginning to look a little greener.

    Might be time to “Thunderbolt”!

And what about the 30 other phone models on AT&T that are capable of HSUPA I guess we just dont count right?

    • Alex D

      Exaggerate much?

  • sean76

My Thunderbolt is plain crazy fast, no issues with 4G here…at&t is pathetic

    • Douche

Your thunderbolt is a year old EVO with a 4g radio

      • Dario69

So true. So true. People talk about iSheep. How about HTCSheep.

And it is even worse. Your Thunderbolt is a really two year old HTC HD2 with a 4g radio because the EVO was really a copy of that phone.

Look at you dumbass! You don’t have a clue. It has nothing in common with either phone. The chip is light years ahead more ram and rom. Its like comparing the isheep 3gs to an isheep4.

    • numetheus

Congratulations! You could have gotten the same phone from Spring a year ago!

  • aLb3Rt

Dropped T-Mobile for the Atrix, returned, now rocking a ThunderBolt. Happy camper!

This should have been working from the start, but the fact that my download speed on my (un)Inspire is slower than my dad’s iPhone 4 is more disturbing to me.

  • bgr’ish

Ah yes, “the lack of true 4G”. Compound hypotheticals.

And the check is in the mail, and I promise not to c…….

Get ready for total Network Failure! !!

(And, have the following within arm’s reach: MicroCell Tower, Unsecure Wireless Access Point, Duct Tape)

  • http://twitter.com/mbcls ask me

    big freaking deal!
when do we get the 4G speeds?
wait, we cant! they just rename their 3G network to 4G!
on att map, it shows i have 4G coverage in bayarea CA, but speedtest on inspire is SAME as any other 3G phones!

    • Whoareu

It also has alot to do with congestion. There is not enough 3G bandwith to reach the 4G speeds. Try it at 4 am … Maybe you’ll hit 6 megs, maybe not. The technology is there, the space is not. This is the need for T-Mobile. They have space.

. . . 4G owners have been very vocal about the lack of true “4G” compatibility in the devices . . .

How can people complain about something that does not exist?!

As per a recent technical article: “4G is a collection of fast things that no one [cell providers] has”.

    • http://rmbo47.myopenid.com/ rmbo47

Semantics. Call it “the next step in high speed data for smartphones” if you want to be anal about the stupid name. Whatever. Bottom line is the Atrix has much faster capabilities built in but can’t use it. And that’s just sad.

Sweet! Would be nice to upload pics or send emails with attachments faster than 300kbps!

    • Cellularghost

Like another poster said, this is what happens when you rename your 3g network 4g. Sprint snd verizon are the only major ones with “4g” and I use that term with a loose context lol.

  • Seabass

That’s why I took mine back my Captivate with a custom ROM thanks to XDA had way faster speeds compared to the Atrix.

Why bring an update which is limited to to some Atrix user whiles you can bring an update (Gingerbread) which every Atrix user can enjoy?

iDevice users are loving their devices not because it has 4g, 20g, HSUPA . . . . . . . but it has a regularly updated software for a good UX.

    Bring on gingerbread!

wow what a great new phone and it will be going even faster with 4g! now they only have to fix what cell phones were originally made for…. CALLING!!! thats a horrible fail lmao

  • Jered

Hey AT&T customers!! High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) is a 3G mobile telephony protocol in the HSPA family with up-link speeds up to 5.76 Mbit/s. The name HSUPA was created by Nokia. The official 3GPP name for ‘HSUPA’ is Enhanced Uplink (EUL).[1]

AT&T is using the same crap technology, where’s their LTE? They are just poloshing their current turd network.

considered getting the Inspire but not with AT&T. Android + ATT,Verizon, and Sprint = bad news.
