Apple ‘Smart TV’ in the works, analyst suggests

Entertainment

Apple may be expanding its portfolio beyond just Apple TV to an actual “Smart TV,” according to Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. “Checks in Asia suggest Apple is working on a Smart TV prototype,” Huberty said in a note to investors on Friday. She also suggested that such a TV could help create a whole new Smart TV category. While there are already connected TVs that some manufacturer’s advertise as being “smart,” Huberty thinks Apple’s could include “TV/Video content, gaming, DVR as well as other features like apps and FaceTime.” By 2013, such a device could earn Apple roughly $4 billion for every 1% of the TV market it grabs, Huberty said. We think a cooler option might be for Apple to take the ATRIX 4G path and create a TV dock that would allow your phone to power services β€” and render them properly β€” on your home TV. It would certainly be a cheaper option. Either way, Infinity Blade rendered on the big screen? Count us in.

I just love all the rumors here at BGR. It’s always Apple and its always if, could, maybe. If if’s and but’s were candy and nuts we would all have a happy f*cking new year. BGR Shill for all things Apple. Thank you and good night!!

Will it be as successful as AppleTV or the first gen iTV?

Here’s hoping it’s not as “successful” as the playbook turns out to be – lol.

FINALLY, I can replace my TV every year!

while this is a funny comment, i think it touches on a potential achilles’ heel in the smartTV strategy. i use an every other year upgrade cycle for my phone and tablet, but i expect my TV to last much longer than that. it would seem to make more sense to do an iTV peripheral that is less expensive and can be affordably upgraded every year. i realize they have one out now, but it obviously needs a lot of work.

lmao wow apple is always behind, theres something called Google TV and its been out for a quiet a while now. apple do your self a favor and just stay on your gay iOS operating system

Google TV is a failure too. that’s like saying your turd is bigger than my turd. Hey, how about you just take both and go away?

Just because you don’t have one doesn’t make it a failure. The device is a bit expensive (though a fraction of what Apple’s will cost, I’m sure), but it works quite well.

You’re comparing two completely different products. Google TV=Apple TV. A Smart TV would be something completely different.

Katy doesn’t have a great track record, but the fact that the rumor yesterday was that AirPlay(video) was being floated to TV manufacturers lends credence to this. Given that DLNA is floundering…. I think this has a reasonable ‘user centric’ (instead of server centric) experience that people can grok.

That said, I bought on the rumor… an ATV2 last night. at $99 it’s future proofing for my current 37″ HDTV, and any ‘great deals’ when AirPlay takes over the market, and all those nonAP TVs become surplus.

I think Google TV showed that people don’t want to make their (expensive) TV a (cumbersome) computer.
They want it to be an _output_ device to a simple content device.

AirPlay makes this real… take your phone, your computer, your tablet… click ‘Diisplay Via AirPlay on TV named FooBar” and it just happens…

What does this take… and internet enabled TV… and an airplay listener port. and TV menu item to ‘select Airplay as Input’

    That’s an interface people love… more like a stereo… and not a sony/google keyboard.

i doubt this is superior to my HTPC….. and my HTPC is over 3 years old (upgraded multiple times)

    near silent fans
    core2duo e8400 @ 3.6GHz
nVidia HDMI video card with 1GB of ram (can play anything at any resolution)
    windows 7 64bit ultimate
    4GB of ram
    4.5TB of HDD space
    BD ROM

the cost? over the course of 3 years i dont think it costed me more than $350 becuase the parts i got were all on sale when i purchased them but all onsale at diffrent times.

some parts i got even below cost because of rebates and christmas/black friday sales.

ex: the HDMI video card was only $18 after a $10 rebate and instore instant rebate
