Microsoft’s ‘NoDo’ Windows Phone update still days, even weeks away

Software

Earlier this week, Microsoft announced that its first major Windows Phone update — dubbed NoDo — is being pushed to users’ handsets. Sixteen Windows Phone devices from over a dozen countries have, or will have, the update — which finally brings copy & paste functionality — in the coming days. Users in the United States, however, still have a bit of waiting to do. According to a new status page setup by the company, T-Mobile’s pair of Windows Phones — the Dell Venue Pro and HTC HD7 — are currently in the “scheduling” phase. This procedure typically takes “10 days or less,” according to Microsoft, at which point the update will begin rolling out to handsets. AT&T’s trio of Windows Phones — the Samsung Focus, the LG Quantum, and HTC Surround — are currently in the “testing” stage. Microsoft explains that phones with this distinction are “undergoing mobile operator network and quality tests,” but does not provide an estimated time of completion for this step. Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer, at one point championed the fact that updates to the Windows Phone operating system would be delivered by his company, not wireless carriers. While Microsoft may be the one delivering the bits, it looks like U.S. mobile operators are still finding ways to slow things down. The waiting continues…

No do indeed. What a shame. Microsoft, you could’a been a contender.

They need to learn from android on how to properly release OS updates. M$ is embarrassing.

Huh? Lol most of the Android devices are still running 2.1. Yea they need to learn from Google. Lol
      god dam fanroids. Lol

      Ummm… What?

Did you mean to say Apple instead of Android? Android has five different versions of it’s OS running on it’s devices all of which get updated at completely different schedules often times months apart. Hell, it’s almost a year apart when you think about when 2.2 launched and here we sit with devices that are still scheduled but haven’t yet received it. It’s replacement 2.3 is already out with talks of 2.4 right around the corner!

At least Google has an update schedule of roughly one major release every six months unlike Microsoft who is still running the exact same software as when they launched last Oct/Nov.

I think saying Google “properly releases OS updates” is quite a stretch…..

Let me troll and repeat myself one more time:

The G1′s first official update: 6 months after release.

iOS receiving an update that included copy/paste: 2 years after release.

MS’ alleged NoDo update: 5 months after release.

Once again, assuming MS makes good on their promise, they are actually faster, or taking into account its 2011 now, at least on par w/ the their competitors.

Once they surpass the 6 month mark, then you come back and talk some smack and it’ll be ok. Until then, nothing more than fanboy hate.

So it takes MS 5 months after release to put a feature in that iOS has had for 3 years now, and that makes sense to you? There’s nothing wrong with having your first update 5 months after release, the problem is the update is including basic features that should’ve been there in the first place. When you release something new to the market in late 2010, it better have just as many, or more, basic features than your competition. I was ::this close:: to getting a WP7 phone… but lack of front facing camera, among other things, has me waiting on the sidelines.

    Pathetic.

IT is sad, but I would rather have the update not brick my phone. See the Focus update.

People wonder why apple is the people’s choice ….these companies can’t do the simple stuff right

Well at least all windows phone 7 are getting the NoDo update. Better late than never in my opinion.

I see what you mean, however, how much LATER can you hold off? You must really LOVE windows. I am not bashing you or other owners, but think about it. When do they ever release an update to keep you satisfied or have it embedded into their software? But then again us Apple users or some Android users (key word some) get updates here and there. But then again, our devices OS are legit–meaning we are happy with them enough to have our devices updated in due time. But we know we will get updates at certain times. 5.0 iOS in July I am sure. :-) I was waiting patiently for RIM to release something cool, but have they? 6.0 couldn’t run on my BB Storm. Sad. But much happier now.

Microsoft probably meant to call it the NOcanDO update for your phones………just not yet.

you know what bothers me …europe has the update but our truly greedy carriers..will delay it here,I am personallt tired of att..in particular and their condescending attitude….testing what ,a new cap system, falsely claiming that we are out of bandwith, but there is plenty if you pay more..and you others how can you say sahme on MS if the update is out around the world…then what do our carriers need…

  • Anonymous

also the newd htc hd 7 on ATT will come out of the box with the update…WHAT

  • Anonymous

So much for “all phones will receive updates at the same time…”

    Gosh Dang it all!!!!

  • Bert

After enduring this BS with Android, I was looking hard at WP7 for when it hits Verizon, but if this is how they are going to play, I am going to switch to Apple. Why the carriers have to hold things up like this is beyond me.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa? Really Micro? Really? Feel bad for those folks who buy into having a Windows phone just so they can manage their at-home computer files. Sad.
