Hands on with Sprint’s Nexus S 4G

CTIA

If you’ve seen one Nexus S, you’ve seen em’ all. That’s all that can really be said about the freshly announced Nexus S 4G from Sprint. The very same handset that was released on T-Mobile several months ago has made its way to Sprint, with the only addition being — obviously — a WiMAX radio. The device runs Gingerbread (Android 2.3.4) and has the same light-weight, compact design of the pure-Google handset we all know and love. The svelte smartphone was floating around the Pepcom media event show-floor and, thanks to the fact that the event took place on the “garden level,” it couldn’t soak up any of those sweet, sweet 4G radio waves. Regardless, we snapped a few images for you to take a peek at. Enjoy!

wow I would love to get that phone but without the ability to add a Micro SD card so if your phone go to hell you can’t get your pics or what other stuff you have on it because it will all be stored on the phones inter memory you can’t get that stuff off that was the deal breaker for me

um, buy a usb cable. Get all the data off you want.

edit: it comes with a usb cable. Plug it in to your computer.

by go to hell he means the screen dies or something, thus preventing you from said plugging & getting.

SD cards resolve this & thus are a necessity given no electronics can be 100% infallible.

You know you can always backup or sync your data. SD cards can be lost or damaged, so what happens in that scenario for you?

    • Anonymous

USB cable, which is of course included, or wireless sync through DoubleTwist.

    • Jerrycycle

You could just sync to dropbox.

I would have been all over this phone, however by them leaving out 720p video recording, and a micro SD card will make me pass. Where’s this Bionic for VZW already….

If you’re not going to give me a microSD card, I feel like you have to give me 32GB of storage. One or the other. Doing neither is doubleplusungood.

    • Wirelessmodz

the sd isnt there cause its a developer phone so they dont need the extra space

      • Rednox

Ok, a developer device. Yeah, good.
But what is for customer in this two words? It could be a better device with SD card support, or at least with 32Gb storage.
BTW, device is really comfort to use. Glad to have mine.

It’d be a great device to own if it felt like something other than a plastic shell that candy comes in.

T-Mobile had 4G, before it was actually even 4G, when the first NS came out. BS.

I wonder if it would be possible to unlock the phone to use on Verizon’s 3G network since it’s got a CDMA radio in it?

    • http://twitter.com/homescrub homescrub

You can’t unlock CDMA phones. you sir, fail.

      • pureGoogleExperienceOnVZ

Sorry for not being up on my terms. Clearly, I don’t spend as much time as you do on phone technology.

That being said, does anyone think it would be possible to use this phone on Verizon’s 3G network somehow?

      • Anonymous

Its completely possible.. But Sprint and VZW wont allow ANY other phones besides there own. So you can unlock it but VZW won’t accept it. Metro PCS will accept ANY CDMA phone.. Your best bet is to ESN swap a Nexus S to a comparable VZW phone. Its illegal and hard as hell, good luck. I would start by learning how to put an Epic 4G on boost mobile.

      • Jplewisud

u are wrong u can unlock cdma phones . well sprint phones most all verizon phones are unlocked . 000000 is the unlock code

        Metro PCS says you can

Could there be a less exciting post? Mediocre phone on a horrific carrier. Riveting

    • Homer

As un-exciting as this post is… the 27 Apple related posts per day still take the cake

    • Lumpia91791

Not when it shows another carrier with a pure Google phone right out of the box. It may be 1 year late but at least Sprint is now getting a Nexus phone. Since it’s pure out of the box Sprint will have to fix your phone. They can’t say SOL voiding the warranty when jailbreaking goes wrong and pointing you to an unsubsidized replacement phone. It’s the pure Google that makes this phone great not the crappy hardware specs Sammy made, just ask the people with a year old phone rocking the newest update. So enjoy the Apple, Verizon, AT&T&T Kool Aide.

Lmao @ you.. Nexus S is better than your phone (unless you’re on Android) and Sprint is great unless you live in the sticks.. I get 7.5mbps in LA.. Your mileage may vary in the backwoods

  • Anonymous

Will tethering be a no charge extra like it is with the T-Mobile Nexus S? Need to jump ship if AT&T kills off my 3G band.

  • Ryan

will the screen scatch? thats my biggest concern… im debating between the nexus or the atrix. what do you guys think?

    • Trotter121

Yes I have scratches and I’m careful
