T-Mobile unveils G2x smartphone, 4G Mobile Hotspot, more; doubles HSPA+ speed to 42Mbps

Breaking

Just because it’s most likely going to be acquired doesn’t mean T-Mobile is going to be a no-show at CTIA this year. The carrier just introduced its latest smartphone, the T-Mobile G2x, which is a new Android handset from LG. It is powered by a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor with a 4-inch display, an 8-megapixel camera, and Android 2.2. In addition to the new handset, T-Mobile is continuing the company’s 4G onslaught with an announcement that it will be doubling its HSPA+ speeds — first in markets like Las Vegas, New York and Orlando, with Long Island, Northern New Jersey and Chicago close behind. The carrier expects 140 million people in 25 markets to have access to increased 4G speeds by mid-year. T-Mobile also introduced its first portable hotspot — a 4G Mobile Hotspot manufactured by ZTE. It will allow up to five devices to connect via Wi-Fi to a compact 21Mbps-capable 2.64 ounce device. Lastly, T-Mobile says that the Rocket 3.0 from ZTE will be the its first 4G product to take full advantage of the new 42 Mbps service, and it will join the T-Mobile Jet 2.0 and prepaid Rocket 4G laptop sticks. All of the aforementioned devices will be available later this spring except for the Jet 2.0 laptop stick, which will launch later this week on March 23rd.

    cool story bro

Anyone who buys a T-Mobile phone now is just setting fire to their money….we already know at&t is making all T-Mobile users switch to their already crowed network and will be using T-Mobile’s HSPA+ frequency as their very own 4g…buyer beware.

    • Lechero

yeah, so that means i’m Bi-Winning!!

    • Eflo

Wow you are ignorant. Look into the increased cell tower density. The acquisition will likely resolve a lot of at&ts crowding. In the short term, Tmobile customers will win out on this. They either get to leave without an etf or get to stick out the contract with an increased network. Who knows, even in the long run att might allow existing customers to grandfather their plans.

      • CMC

Taking two crowded networks and putting them together doesn’t make things any better. The 3g networks of both carriers are incompatible with each other so nothing will change in that respect. For the 2g network, there could be roaming between them, but that’s not significant. Not sure where all the “increased cell tower density” is coming from when the networks are on different frequencies.

Paying twice as much as they do now, being forced to buy a new device, giving up all freedoms with devices (such as NO pure Android phones at all on ATT), new commits with higher ETF, capped date, and being forced onto a network that can’t even handle what’s it’s got today…this is TMobile customers winning?

You forgot to mention that they will be forced to buy an AT&T phone.

    • r1tman

Not true G2x is one the first phones to support Att and Tmo radio Frequencies …. so this would work on either carriers ….

      At&t has no HSPA+ Speeds.. soo…

  • Sfo017

Don’t buy anything of tmobiles….they will become paper weights in a year!!!

    • Jonk

I saw those reports too, but I find it hard to believe that at&t would turn off millions of people’s 3g, but then again, I have never been an at&t customer.

      • CMC

They will force them over the “AT&T network” just like they did with the “original” AT&T Wireless Services when Cingular swallowed them. They left the “blue” customers be for a while, but wouldn’t allow them to make any changes to their accounts, they couldn’t buy any new devices, and were constantly being told they need to migrate over. That of course involved forcing them to buy a new device, make a new two year commit to the carrier (the carrier commits nothing to you), pay a “migration” fee, and choose the much higher rate plans with less voice usage, and highly restricted data.

They’ve done it before…they WILL do it all again. Yes, TMO customers WILL lose their voice/data plans. They will NOT get ANY access to AT&T’s 3g network without moving to AT&T…which they can simply do today.

This won’t be the first ignorant person to say this but to clarify for the overwhelming amount of ignorant consumers..

T-Mobile’s 3G network will continue to be in full operation AFTER the merger. They will begin to phase out AWS when most of the customers have dual mode (AT&T and T-Mobile 3G) devices.. that will take years.

    • Gaza

Interestingly enough, the specs listed on T-Mobile’s website, “# Band (frequency):
      # 850 MHz;900 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz;UMTS/HSPA+: AWS Band IV / 2100 / 1900 / 850″, means that it will work on at&t’s 3G network; there is no 1700 to be found. So, it wouldn’t become “paper weights in a year”, at least not in this phone’s case.

      • Gaza

Wait… just realized the “AWS Band IV” there. So this thing is all around “future proof” if things go as at&t plans.

The title is wrong, it should have said AT&T unveils G2x smartphone..

GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT T-MOBILE USA IS NOT GOING ANY WHERE IN A LONG TIME.
THERE STILL GOING TO BE INDIVIDUAL CARRIERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • KCRic

Get your facts straight, it will only remain that way for another 12 months – one year. Let me rephrase that: der der der, der der, der der der der. DER.

  • @j_nathaniel

By the time anyone has to switch to keep their high speed data working no one who visits this site will have the same phone as they currently use anyways…I hope the merger doesn’t ruin the great service I currently have with T-Mobile.

I am already seeing 4-9mbps on my MyTouch 4g. I am looking forward to things getting even faster.

  • Anonymous

att buying t-mobile doesent mean anything its still going to be t-mobile usa and its not going anywhere.
    Get your facts right people!!!

    • CMC

For a short while maybe. But there is no way in hell that ATT will leave them as a standalone carrier. The intention is to take over the company, dismantle its operations, move its customers to the ATT fold, and completely de-brand anything associated with TMO. They don’t buy companies to have separate brands. They buy them to eliminate them. That’s the nature of an acquisition.

  • http://twitter.com/jajosh66 Joshua Dominic

Um, not to ruin the moment here, but when is the iPad 2 winner going to be announced?

  • CMC

Unless the DOJ flat out denies the killing of TMO, this is kinda pointless. I will miss the most fair minded carrier of all. Sad…

  • Mr8820

AT&T has said that they are moving all T-Mobile people to their frequency and will use T-Mobile’s frequency as their new 4g…it can’t get any simpler. AT&T and T-Mobile operates on 2 different GSM frequencies….you can’t throw a switch to make all phones network compatible, put down the Playboy book and read something like the WSJ. you can also scream “grandfathered” til the cows come home… if AT&T doesn’t offer unlimited data to their own, do you really think they’re going to allow T-Mobile people to get it because they care? Let me get your dealers’ number!

I am with Alltel which will become AT& T within one month and I will be keeping my unlimited data plan. When my old contact expires in June I can get a new phone and still keep me existing plan.

      • Ness777

Wait You are with Alltel right now? Wow Lucky, Alltel in my area sold out to At&T last November. Been having crappy service ever since.

      • Ness777

You may still be able to keep your plan, but if you try to upgrade to one of Att’s newer phones, they will make you sign a 2year contract. When they merged with me, my alltel contract was already up. But still they wanted me to get a 2year contract phone. I was mad, but made the right decision of not upgrading.

The part of the phone under the screen is too big. This could have been a great phone if they had stuck a 4.3″ LCD in the same chassis. As is, that just doesn’t look good imo.

  • JustinSaneV2

Isn’t T-Mobile making this phone compatible with AT&T’s 3G frequency?
