Sprint’s HTC EVO 3D hands-on!

CTIA

Sprint just announced the HTC EVO 3D, its latest 4G WiMAX smartphone with a 3D-spin, and we had some time to sit down to check out the device first-hand. In one word: Amazing. The EVO 3D’s 4.3-inch 3D display is incredible to look at while displaying 3D images and video. It reminds us of looking at a holographic trading card. We watched some user-submitted 3D YouTube videos on the phone, and a few jesters dancing around really popped off of the display. Similarly, the flowers in a bouquet that one woman was holding in an image seemed to jump off the screen — we actually reached out to touch them at one point! There’s a ton to discuss here, so hit the jump for more impressions on the EVO 3D, and don’t forget to check out our hands-on photo gallery.

If you’re a spec junkie, we’ll get a few things out of the way first. The EVO 3D is powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and the thing flies. HTC’s Sense homescreen works like a carousel on the EVO 3D, so you can flip through different customized homescreens quickly. We shot our finger across the screen and the carousel took off spinning without any sign of sluggishness. The back of the EVO 3D has a nice divoted texture to it that adds to its premium feel. It’s a little bulky, but not too bad considering how much HTC packed into the device, and Sprint told us HTC removed the kickstand found on the original EVO to keep the device more pocketable. While connected to Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network, we were able to load the BGR.com homepage pretty quickly, too.

The EVO 3D is capable of recording 3D video in 720p, or 2D video in 1080p. The coolest part about snapping photos or video in 3D is that you actually see the images popping off the screen as you look through the viewfinder. To make things even easier, HTC added a dedicated metal camera button and there’s a sturdy metal switch for toggling between 2D and 3D shooting modes. In the images, you’ll notice that the HDMI-out port is missing. Sprint told us that the microUSB port will also provide HDMI-out functionality, so it sounds like the device will need (and hopefully come with) an HDMI connector accessory. Sprint hasn’t provided any details on pricing or a launch date for the EVO 3D, but one representative confirmed it will land sometime this summer. From what we’ve seen so far, we can’t wait to spend more time with the EVO 3D.

No kick stand, no DLNA and no NFC? What gives?!!! Besides that, the phone is amazing but just which those features was on the phone……..

    • Deval

I swear I read somewhere that it has HDMI and DLNA

      • Blackula

I know about the hdmi but it didnt say nothing about dlna

No kickstand to cut down on thickness, it does have DLNA, and NFC is only a slight disappointment since it’s not near mainstream anyway (that’ll be another 3-5 yrs). And don’t forget the sweeeeet Google Voice integration.

    no kickstand?? WTF?? FAIL

This is lame, I was all geared up to trade in my EVO and toss money at Sprint/HTC to get a dual core qHD phone and they had to toss this stupid 3D gimmick into it? I’m not going to buy it exclusively because it’s 3D. What a letdown. I really hope this doesn’t turn into a trend. I’d love if you could order one and have the option for with or without 3D screen… Sigh…

The 3D is only for viewing pix, vids if u CHOOSE to view them that way. There is a 2D/3D switch. Everything else u do on the phone (scrolling thru ur apps, menus, etc) will be in regular 2D

  • Bababooey

Probably a stupid question but will you only be able to view these recorded videos in 3d on the device? Or could u theoretically connect it via hdmi (attached to whatever accessory will plug into the microusb port) to a 3D tv and be able to view it in 3D with glasses on the tv?

I really don’t care much for the 3D, seeing at as a feature that probably won’t use
Past the first week I had it, I see it as an upgraded Evo 4g, which is what I’ve been waiting for. The specs are solid.

So my friend told me that this phone was going to have 4GB of RAM. I didn’t believe it, of course, and I didn’t read anything about it in this article. But why in the whole wide world would a phone need 4GB of RAM? it’s ridiculus.

    • Bababooey

That was a misprint the rom and ram were switched around. 4th rom 1gb ram.

Is this phone gonna be a gas (battery) guzzler?

Unless HTC actually learns how to write an efficient kernel… probably. Go custom.

Lol removed the kickstand to make it more pocketable? I call BS, how unpocketable was the original with the kickstand? I’ll definitely be looking for a modified case with a kickstand :D

Dude, you have to admit that is one really cool looking device. I love it.

This looks like an awesome phone!

Full disclosure, I’m a EVO owner. This looks like the next logical step forward.

    Only see 2 negatives.

    1. Should have put the usb jack on the bottom so the phone could be charged/connected using a drop in desktop dock. The EVO got this right, most other new phones have not.

    2. What is the battery life going to be like? Will the dual-core 1.2Ghz suck it dry?

I don’t think the core will make too much of a difference so long as the kernel manages everything correctly. I don’t remember where, but I do remember reading that newer multi core processors are more energy efficient than old single cores (for these mobile devices) so that should help also.

has anyone seen a price?? Thanks
