Motorola will stop building XOOM tablets after June, report claims [updated]

Tablets

According to an unconfirmed report, Motorola is set to curtail production of its XOOM tablet beginning in April and production will cease after June. Industry watcher DigiTimes cites anonymous sources from within component suppliers in claiming that XOOM production in the first quarter of 2011 met forecasts of between 700,000 and 800,000 units. Motorola’s manufacturing partners are expected to ship between 400,000 and 500,000 units in March, and then April production will drop to 300,000 tablets. May’s production will reportedly dip further still and DigiTimes claims Motorola will stop building the XOOM at the end of June. The cause of the alleged drop in production is unclear, though the website’s sources speculate that Motorola may be uncertain about its position in the tablet market and will therefore slow production. They also speculate that Motorola may instead launch a new version of its XOOM tablet, which is the more likely scenario considering Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha’s previous comments with regard to the tablet market. Total XOOM shipments in 2011 are expected to be 3-5 million units, the report states.

UPDATE: Following the publication of this post, Motorola supplied BGR with a comment via email. The company states that DigiTimes’ report is not accurate, and Motorola will continue to manufacture the Motorola XOOM.

If Apple lovers had their way, there would be absolutely no competition and everyone would buy Apple. This, in effect, would be extremely negative on progress and pricing. Apple fans don’t care though so as long as Apple is their one and only.

There is nothing wrong with the Xoom that a decent ad campaign can’t fix. The ridiculous “guy in a spaceship” ads make it look like nothing more than a gaming device and don’t tell viewers what it is. Moto doesn’t have to copy Apple but they could take a lesson in showing the viewer WHY their life would be enhanced by a $500 expenditure. The Xoom ads sure don’t speak to the gegeneral public.

isn’t DigiTimes notorious for bad rumors?

Motorola needs a better marketing genius. Their commercials always tout these specs that non-tech savvy people could really care less about. People want to SEE how the device works. Just look at all of Apple’s ads, it’s always showing off what the device DOES.

I’d like to see other tabs succeed because right now there just isn’t a viable competitor. I got my SO the iPad when it first came out and still today I haven’t settled on any one in particular that I wanted to buy. I played with the Xoom and it was great, had a nice interface and all but other than that, the app development needs to come to speed. I’m not worried but as far as moving devices, Motorola could have done better than that stupid alien-like commercial which showed nothing as far as what the Android OS has to offer which I feel (having been in the iOS camp for years) is much greater than what the iPad has to offer.

BGR should really learn to confirm reports before they post them. Motorola might have grounds for a lawsuit.

Are you all kidding. Xoom has got in on. I’TS a great tab and a big success. Head and shoulders above any other android and rim product. There’s more to this story. And more to moto’s plans.

Hmmm, should I get the Zoom or HTC View? A question to ponder….

Moto work on reducing the price, reducing the weight and the thickness without making the device seem cheap and you’ll have a winner.
