Motorola XOOM Wi-Fi up for pre-order from Costco; $589.99, free case

Retail

Motorola announced the March 27th launch of its Wi-Fi-only XOOM on Wednesday, and now Costco has made the tablet available for pre-order. While Costco quotes a ship date five days later than Motorola’s β€” April 1st as opposed to March 27th β€” the wait will award buyers free shipping, a discounted price and a free gel case. Granted, the discount is only $10, but tack on the free shipping and that snazzy gel case, and you’ve got yourself a solid deal. We reviewed the Motorola XOOM in February and said it packs a serious punch. Included with that punch is Google’s Android 3.0 Gingerbread OS, a dual-core 1GHz processor, 32GB of storage and a 10.1-inch HD display.

Thanks, Roberto

April 1st as a release date for Xoom. Priceless.

    um where is the link?

“We reviewed the Xoom… packs a serious punch.”

Zach, I guess you didn’t read BG’s review.

      Hey retard
      “packs a serious punch”
is verbatim from the linked article.

I also thought their article was biased. It did not say “the Xoom is better than the iPad” which is what I need to hear whether true or not.

Also, Android 3.0 isn’t gingerbread its Honeycomb. #corrections

yet another tablet what is it going to offer

I bet the lines will be incredible for this device.

    Ok maybe not.

Whats your point, do you see lines for buying android phones? nonetheless, they are the bestselling devices. More related to your heart? there was barely lines for the Verizon iPhone! does that means that it did not sell well? In my opinion lines for a gadget are stupid and a shemeful waste of time.

That doesn’t mean demand for Android phones is high. Android phones span several devices across all carriers in all countries. There are buy one get one free deals, and anyone can pick up an Android device for free or $49 on contract. I know people who have Android phones not because they really like Android, but because it is a good phone at the right price (free). A friend of mine got a couple for him and his wife for the simple reason that if he went to verizon and got one android phone, another one would be given to his wife free. Neither are Android fans … they just wanted a good phone that could do a lot.

On the other hand, there are no such deals for iPhone. No buy one get one free. No iPhone for under $100 unless it’s an old outdated model that is going to be replaced. People that go for iPhones actually want an iPhone, not just anyone looking for a good phone at a cheap price.

By logic Android should the be the most successful platform seeing as there are over 30 different phones being sold with the OS at one single cycyle. On the other hand Apple has 2 phones tops selling in a cycle. If you only took into account the best selling single Android phone and compared it to Apple’s best selling iPhone that would be the only comparison worth seeing.

No thats is not what I meant. I was trying to point out that lines only means good sales for people who got stock in the pre.internet era. I remember lines everywhere in the 90s in the banks, theaters, utilities etc. Who in his right mind is going to waste a day making a line when he can order the same online just by clicking in his computer?

        just irrational people!

They should have brought out a 16GB wifi model to compete with the $499 ipad directly. It includes a SD card slot so people could always add more storage later. Seems like a mistake to me to not compete on the headline price. It allows Apple to say “$499″ and up and I believe the 16GB wifi iPad is the best seller.

What are they smoking? Only $10 cheaper than the ipad2? The ipad2 actually has apps made for a tablet or the ipad itself. The Xoom will be using apps made for a phone.

I’ve noticed this with the Samsung Galaxy Tab that I bought for my wife. This leads to problems with the apps, due to the difference in screen resolution. Good luck with this one Motorola. I wonder how many returns they’ll have.

um, My iPAD had problems stretching the 2x resolution on the first few months when there were only a handful of iPAD apps available.. Coming from iPhone to iPAD is the same as those of android devices… what are you trying to imply? My iPAD was a glorified iPhone before apps were really made for it. I would like to see better resolution on iPAD instead, Xoom has better resolution….

      Cingular,

You are right about your Galaxy tab. It is running phone apps, because its not using Honeycomb 3.0. Your device has to be Honeycomb 3.0 to run apps designed for tablets. When you go to the Android market and search for apps on the XOOM it seperates the apps design for tablets. The user experience on the XOOM easily competes with Ipad one or Ipad2.

I am an Apple guy who uses a macbook pro, multiple Ipods, etc. and I have to say I prefer the XOOM. I recieved my software update and now have flash. I sent this from my XOOM.

i pre-ordered mine off amazon, despite being a costco member. the tax just doesn’t justify the purchase or the hassle of returning if it i chose to.

    • Eric

I hear you on the sales tax part, but it is easier to return it to Costco (no questions asked and 90 days to return it) then Amazon (pay for shipping back, need a reason or you pay a restocking fee, and 30 day returns).

Well i wonder if this “ipad killer” has gotten the issue with the SD card slot not functioning due to lack of a software update resolved.

    25-50% discount or GTFO.

Both the Xoom and the iPad are useless in my book, now if you find PCs complicated the iPad is the best option available. The Xoom is just a toy and people that already have PCs like me, find it pretty neat but would never buy one. Rim won the Mobile OS war against microsoft not cause it was better but cause Crackberries did emails pretty good. iPad might do less then a xoom but it does them pretty good.

  • Chut Pata

Listen all you followers who do not innovate. Your product has to be way better than the innovator (in this case Apple), or way cheaper. I am an Android fan and Motorola user but have to say this, “Your product is neither way too better than iPad2, nor way too cheap”. Show it up your behind.

    • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

I think Honeycomb is better and more innovative then iOS but iPad2 still provides a better value for consumer given the current state of things (app selection, etc).

    • Anonymous

actually it is the OS honeycomb is a ACTUAL tablet OS, so they have innovated as where iPad still uses a mobile phone/ipod touch os.

I bet the $100 off coupon to follow soon

  • Anonymous

    @Stan – Exactly!
Make it $499 and I’m in for 2 of them…

  • akoto
