Netflix to spend over $100 million on first original series, report claims

Entertainment

According to a report from Deadline Hollywood on Tuesday, Netflix will soon close a deal that will result in the entertainment juggernaut’s first original content. In a deal reportedly worth more than $100 million, Netflix is said to have outbid major cable networks including HBO and AMC for a new series produced by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey. Netflix is is apparently willing to commit to two seasons of the show, entitled “House of Cards,” which is a political thriller based on a book and British miniseries of the same name. An exclusive deal of this magnitude would bring with it a great deal of exposure, of course, and cable companies would likely be rattled as well. Netflix had roughly 20 million subscribers at the end of 2010, and its numbers are growing quickly.

Wow this is a pretty big risk. For established studios and networks, if a series fails oh well back to the drawing board. For Netflix though things could literally break their momentum and ultimately if it fails they have to pass this cost on to the consumer. Hope it works for them cause Im not ready to accept higher monthly fees.

    Oh Dear!

Very few US remakes of UK shows seem to work, this does not bode well I fear.

Cable is already gunning for Netflix….I hate Cable companies, they are as corrupt and greedy as could be.

I’m talking to you, Time Warner, Cox, Comcast, and AT&T.

Kill of these old legacy companies.

This is what I’m talking about! This type of forward thinking should give Netflix some staying power! They must have read BlogMaverick, because I swear Marc Cuban pointed this aspect out months ago. KUDOS to keeping our pathway to “Cord Cutting Open and Viable.”

In stead of spending $100 mil on this crap how about upgradeing the server farms and infrastructure to bring a decent home viewing experience instead of the slooooowwww viewing I’ve had the last month.
