iPad 2 and Smart Cover guts revealed in iFixit tear-down

Tablets

iFixit got down and dirty opening up the iPad 2 Wi-Fi and its Smart Cover accessory over the weekend and has published specs and pictures of the inner workings of both. There aren’t a ton of surprises hiding in the iPad 2, which sports a 1GHz A5 dual-core processor manufactured by Samsung, 512MB of LPDDR2 RAM, a 9.7-inch LED-backlit multitouch display, and 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of internal storage. Its Wi-Fi board is powered by a Broadcom BCM43291HKUBC chip that was used in the first iPad and in the iPhone 4.

Also listed on the battery is a capacity of 6930 mAh. Since mAh = Watt-hours / volts * 1000, converting using the above numbers yields 25 / 3.8 * 1000 = 6,579. It looks like there might be some rounding going on here, or the battery voltage might actually be more like 3.6 volts.

The iPad 2 Smart Cover tear-down revealed 21 magnets (in addition to the 10 magnets in the iPad 2 itself), a large metal plate encased in plastic, and two structural plates. Hit the jump for images of a heaping serving of hardware porn.

512 ram ? Again, it goes to show that the ipad is nothing without its apps.

I don’t think any computer is anything without apps….

Ya see when hardware and software work together it doesn’t need 1ghz of ram like the xoom. And that nothing of an ipad you speak of smokes the xoom in recent tests. Also sold over 500,000 units in 24 hours. But your right it’s nothing.

Yes, but you’re measuring ram by the Ghz, so I think that will nullify anything else you say.

This guy. GHz of RAM = money. The correct use of you/your/you’re mmm. Perhaps the use of mac in the nickname. Surely, you could not be more biased. Random number of allegedly sold devices and sentence fragments. Oh the interwebz.

      and?

Apps that are optimized for the ipad so ran isn’t a huge deal.

        Ram*

What would be the point of any tablet without apps?

I have had the xoom, galaxy tab and iPad and ipad2. All the android tabs lack the build quality of the iPads. IMO the 7″ form factor was nice as was the Droid OS’s ability to save and attach documents. iOS really needs to expand that capability for enterprise solutions. That’s really my only complaint @iPad well that and a jabreak for 4.3

On paper, that’s true. but if you look at the benchmarks comparing the iPad 2 to other dual-core machines such as the atrix and the xoom, there is absolutely no comparison. the iPad 2 completely obliterated the competition in actual performance metrics. This is despite being seemingly handicapped by having only 1/2 the RAM.

I feel like it’s very straightforward to simply add RAM or bump up the processor voltage to get a faster machine, but it takes real engineering to make the most of what you’ve got. This has always been Apple’s strength (in my opinion). It’s taking parts that may not seem like a lot on paper, but making them work amazingly as a team with the right software.

To see those metrics, they are on Ars Technica.

Show me the benchmarks, and none using javascript like GLbenchmark….. Tegra 2 is a specifically design GPU for graphics….Please STFU.

      • n00btastic

My comment with the link won’t post for some reason, but it’s the feature story right now on ArsTechnica. Page 5 of the review talks about several benchmarks (including javascript). Try not to pop an angry blood vessel when you see that the iPad 2 has better measurable performance than some of its competition.

Spec whore arguments aside, the iPad 2 is impressive. Sure, it’s not going to running Solid Works or Call Of Duty at highest resolution… but it is more than capable of meeting needs of the vast majority of users.

Anyone else just love a good tear down?

The ifixit report says the memory is manufactured by Samsung (not the A5 CPU)

    • Anonymous

The memory is stacked inside the A5. A5 is comprised of a GPU, RAM, and the processors.

  • Ultraseven32

going to ifixit web page on ipad2 teardown step 13 you gonna read: “Apple 1GHz A5 dual-core Processor with a 200MHz bus and 512 MB of Samsung manufactured RAM”.

Instead what bgr posted: “1GHz A5 dual-core processor manufactured by Samsung”

  • Ultraseven32

not really. this is what ifixit web page said on step 13: Apple 1GHz A5 dual-core Processor with a 200MHz bus and 512 MB of Samsung manufactured RAM.

only the 512 mb memory ram is manufactured by samsung, not the dual core processor tho.

hmm yes the ipad 2 sold a lot because it’s like anything that’s released by apple only bought by fan boys and not to mentions how apple doesn’t care about the customer. You sell a $599-$899 device that only gives me a 1mp front and rear camera then tell me i have to buy $130 cable if i want to watch my stuff on my TV. Along with the same screen res and no ram change. Oh and my favorite selling me a 3G ban based device then to find out in PC mag that your already working on a Ipad 3 that gives you a better screen res, Camera MP, and has better hardware and supports 4G speeds that comes out next year will i just did an upgrade on my contact that’s 2yrs long and the only way i can upgrade is open a new line or pay the full 899 without upgrade. And this is a company that i trust that is only APP based and that comment about i don’t think any PC is anything with out there apps someone should slap fire out you. Sound like a apple user give there 2 sense and we know how smart you guys are just watch a few Ipad 2 launch line videos lmao. the things i hear from apple pple on those videos asking why is the Ipad 2 better the response is prices less “i can’t really give you a reason i just know i want one” look i have seen countless reviews of the ipad versus the xoom and in every one apple has lost horribly not to mention the A5 chip vs the Tegra 2 which the A5 lost in speed and graphics. all i have to say is android is unstoppable and I’m not an android fan boy i use wp7 im just not stupid or what i call apple fan boys SHEEPS i just know what is better and where real innovation is and where the future is going. really pple tell me what can you do on an ipad that makes me want to spend 800bucks on this every year when nothing is change face it apple milks u for your soul and money and you fan boys cant admit it. that’s all I’m going to say and i know im going to get a you can’t spell or omg is this a little kid writing this or some b/s etc. because that’s the response of an Apple fan boy when the truth has been told so come on bring it better yet sell me on an ipad wait lol you’re going to tell me because it’s an ipad 2 lol and apple is the best company in the world that has more software support than any device out now lmao right

The release of the ipad 2 made the best tablet choice even better. The Original Ipad dropped to $350 if you got a apple refurb which is practically the same as a new one since it has the same 1 year warranty. Personally, I think the ipad 2 release made the original ipad the best valued tablet of 2011.
