Bloomberg: Microsoft to discontinue the Zune

mobile

According to Bloomberg’s Dina Bass, Microsoft will discontinue selling its Zune music player sometime this year. Launched in 2006, the Zune was Microsoft’s response to Apple’s iPod music player and offered us our first look at the Metro UI — the user interface now present on Windows Phone devices. According to Bass, the company will refocus its efforts on the Zune software; working to improve its functionality and usefulness on devices running Microsoft’s new mobile operating system. Microsoft declined to directly comment on the device’s future. “We have nothing to announce about another Zune device,” said a company spokesperson. “Our long-term strategy focuses on the strength of the entire Zune ecosystem across Microsoft platforms.” Zune hardware — the Zune HD — was last refreshed in September of 2009.

I thought they had already been discontinued. I haven’t seen one in ANY stores for quite some time.

That Microsoft continues to make big cash on their archaic products is not being questioned. It’s the fact they are followers, not leaders, in the tech space. Of course they’ve always been followers, but now more than ever. The Windows + Office hammer of doom has lost much of its power. Microsoft’s decline has begun.

This really is too bad. Zune and Zune services were the only real competition to Apple. And, they were actually really good at what they did. I hope this is just a rebranding…Apple can’t touch Zune/xbox integration, its seamless, slick, and fantastic. And no, Apple TV sucks, so STFU

Might as well start the funeral and pity party for you Zune fanboys. Apple ate M$’s lunch on this one. Great integration with the xBox thingy, but not a compelling enough ecosystem. Plus they were just too late to the game. Buh-bye!

I’m hardly a zune fanboy. I don’t even own an MP3 player for that matter, but everyone around me does and a few of them have zunes. I just hate to see competition dissolved. I would react the same if Apple left the PC market. I don’t like much about apple as a whole, but one of the things I DO like about them is that they keep windows PC manufacturers on their toes.

I would like to see some nimble, flexible startup come out with an AWEsome MP3 offering and take Apple for a ride. That would be sweet.

That took about 4 years longer than it had to. Stupid idea to begin with, and Microsoft seemed to go at it half-assed from the start.

Not to mention their unofficial spokesman was that fat retard with the lame tattoo. ROFLMAO!!!

  • is that PAPINYC?

Zune lol I made my girl get one the same day I got my iPod video 30g Dec 06′

This will be horrible. Zune Players are some of the best produced. If you have ever used one, it is superior to any ipod. Including the ipod on the iphone.

Zune on Xbox doesn’t really get your library, acts like pandora, but works great on WP7 devices :)

If I were that guy, I would put a BIG FAT APPLE LOGO over that tat.

    • # WP7 Winning

You mean a big fat sheep logo…apple sucks

I just can’t understand why the Zune HD can’t run and handle the same software as WP7 devices, kind of what Apple does with the iPod touch.

What a colossal waste of money
