Apple sold nearly 1 million iPad 2 tablets over weekend, analysts claim

Some analysts believe Apple may have sold close to 1 million iPad 2 units during the tablet’s debut weekend. Leading up to launch day, opening weekend sales estimates ranged from 300,000 to 600,000 units. Following nationwide sell outs, however, some analysts have upped their estimates significantly. “We would not be surprised to see Apple sell closer to 1 million iPad2s in the opening weekend,” Wedbush Securities analyst Scott Sutherland told Reuters. Apple Store locations and third-party retail partners across the country ran out of iPad 2 inventory quickly following the tablet’s 5:00 p.m. launch on Friday. Some Best Buy locations claim to have sold out of iPad 2 units and accessories within 10 minutes of making the tablet available to customers. Regarding buyer breakdown, Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry believes 60% of iPad 2 buyers were upgrading from last year’s model and the remaining 40% were first-time iPad buyers — and he believes 100% of iPad 2 buyers own at least one other Apple product. Chowdhry also thinks people preferred AT&T’s 3G model over Verizon Wireless’ iPad 2 because AT&T has better customer service.

    I’d fire this analyst just for making that statement. How does he come to the conclusion people are buying the AT&T version over the VZW because of that?

    IF people are buying the AT&T version over VZW the more likely reason would be that there are more AT&T iPhone users.

      Actually it is more because the SIM version is unlocked and can be used anywhere in the world before the IPad 2 arrives there.. Mote value on eBay etc.

        Sorry, Big Red, but I don’t consider a $200 discount plus 24 months of service (x’s $16/mo) a subsidy; I would rather pay full retail and have an unlocked-down version.

I’ve got a Android phone, and a Android Tablet, and an iPod touch. I let my 16 month old use use my iPod touch as a faux cell phone…. makes her happy, and leaves my good stuff alone.

      Wow you really so live in your own little world don’t you? Xoom doesn’t sell well, and it doesn’t take an analyst to guess that. You can see that from sales figures. If I can easily get a Xoom, but can’t get an iPad 2 because they are flying off the shelves, it’s obvious one is selling a lot more than the other.

I played with this on Saturday, and its lighter….thinner….and thats it…….nothing new from the first one except that now you can take pics and make video…..but dont you all have a phone that does that?……..is more convenient to carry around……..and better quality? iPad 2 is for people without an iPod or Macbook Pro, iMac, or iPhone…….The next iPad will have retina display, a better rear camera, and maybe a flash for low lit rooms, and next thing you know, people are standing in line like fools again to buy something they dont really need. Apple is playing all of you fools like the rest of the industry………Apple presents their products the best way possible…..create hype…..and sell millions. You buy because every rich person has stock in Apple and try to boost sales………..they can afford to buy one every year……idiots need to understand that if we stop buying every year, maybe apple will give you substantial updates, not minor ones like this version.

    1 million is a bit high. Yeah they sold out but the thing is most locations had limited quantities. E.g. the Verizon stores in Atlanta had NONE available in stock, they were only taking orders. I personally called 12 stores in ATL and they all said the same thing. AT&T stores also had limited quantities but I won’t ever do business them again. The Targets and Walmarts, if they had any at all, were getting at most 3-5 units (most were not getting them). The Best Buy locations were also limited, the one where I got my iPad2 had 40-50 units and yes they were all sold out by about 8:00pm that evening.

    My belief is that the iPad is a great tool for portability – more so than the laptop. However, portability isn’t a concern for me. I value power over the ability to take it around, so I use a desktop. If I wanted a powerful portable device, I’d probably get an iPad over a laptop simply because a laptop can’t do THAT much more (and I’m gonna be honest here, Windows on a portable device sucks. Windows should mainly be used on desktop platforms. It just uses too much battery.)

    Why are android fanboys so bitter? Are you not happy you won’t have to wait in line to get your tablets? Its obvious the AT& T is in higher demand because it can used internationally (exportability). And AT& T is generally faster NOT most reliable, I said faster.

    Let the envy and jealousy begin… Yes I saw the hordes or people lining up for the Xoom in fact CNN, Fox, and MSNBC all showed hundreds or people lining up for the Xoom… NOT!!! It was for the iPad 1/2 but if it makes you jealous people feel any better you can believe it was for the Xoom.
