Apple passes on NFC in iPhone 5, report suggests

mobile

According to information garnered by UK paper The Independent, Apple will not include Near Field Communications (NFC) technology in its next generation iPhone. Citing sources at “several of the largest mobile operators in the UK,” the paper states that Apple informed mobile carriers of its decision to forgo NFC over several meetings. Analysts suspect that Apple may be working on its own NFC-like payment system — one that routes payment through the company’s iTunes Store — as it has been discouraged by the “lack of a clear industry standard.” NFC is expected to handle over $150 billion by the year 2015, making it a trend that no mobile carrier or manufacturer wants to be left out on.

I question how much truth there is held to that unless you can provide URL

        Go to:

(1.0MP Front Facing Camera will be worked into iPhone 7)

Based on Apple’s trend over the past 4 years of Pown2Own, you will be able to hack the iPhone 6 in 1 second. Good call on no NFC in iPhone 5 for their consumers sake.

But when they do it it will be revolutionary and innovative. And don’t you think iPhone 6 is a bit early? They got copy-paste, multitasking and a decent camera several years late.

      lol Apple, fail again…

LOL. All DROIDS will have NFC in two months and Apple will be forced to come along and do the same. What a joke!

If there is no standard for NFC, one could implement NFC in a way that is incompatible with a checkout system. You could pay for an item at place A, but not place B because they are incompatible. Besides, how many places will you be able to use NFC on? This is a non issue until NFC is standardized and is accepted widely. Until then … It’s just something Fandroids who suck on goonuts can use to complain about because they do seem to do nothing but whine. Paint your vibrator green son and name it Android. It’s the only sex a goonerd will ever get.

You sound like a “goonerd” took your girlfriend.

Judging from Goonerds I have seen. That is not possible.

    Apple=Failed.

Apple = cautious not to implement, too early, a feature that has little acceptance or uniformity.

      Think: betamax, HdDVD

I’m not sold on NFC yet. If it’s supposed to replace my wallet, it’s a fail since my wallet doesn’t need to be powered up just to buy a mocha coca latte ding dong.

So I assume you keep your cell phone powered off when you go out for shopping. Good for you. Illogical logic in defence of Apple by a fanboy.

Good news for anyone selling against a phone that is killing the Industry if you work in wireless. It’s not a suprise to me that Apple would leave something like this out. They did the same thing with picture messaging. Now it’s amazing features like swype.

Everyone always hates on apple for not implementing certain features sooner…and I am usually in agreement with the blog commenters, but not in this case. NFC has been pretty slow to achieve mass adoption and like the article said, it’s not supposed to take over until 2015. Apple has plenty of time to wait it out and see what the market does with this feature. Apple markets to the masses, not super tech geeks (like most of us on this site, haha). Most people could care less about NFC and are not ready for the tech. This will be a non-issue for 98% of people and shouldn’t affect sales in slightest.

And for the record, I am not a “fanboy” and I do consider myself pretty tech savvy. And quite frankly, NFC is a non issue for me and will not be on my radar until mass adoption of the technology occurs.

    Just my 2 cents…

I’m in agreement, for the most part. I have no issue with Apple holding off on adding NFC chips to iPhones. I am, however, disturbed by the suggestion that payments would be forced through iTunes. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, though, given Apple’s lock out of any third party payments through apps.

  • Anonymous

Apple is waiting not to see how this plays out but to profit from it. If they want iTunes to handle the payment, that just means they want a cut of the sale. $150 billion is a lot of money. With r&d and negotiations apple could see upwards of 1%. Annually. For putting a chip in their phone and a few kb of server bandwidth. How is this not apparent to everyone?

    • Supall

This is exactly how I view the report. It isn’t about the technology adoption, but more like how Apple could make it proprietary. They’re just finding another way to lock in their customers.

This is good news for all you poor CrApple device owners. You shoul dbe very happy indeed.

After all if the useless device you own does not even know how to tell the time, do you really want your money on it?

Not really. So go and buy a BlackBerry and start living with a real SmartPhone.

We won’t know for sure until June when Apple reveals the next generation iPhone.

  • 1T2dirtnap

This is a smart move by Apple, they should take their time. No sense in rushing when the consumers or the market/retailers may not be ready. Apple has always watched closely, they weren’t the first to adopt things but when they do they know how to make it better and outsell the competition.
