Google VP Marissa Mayer dishes Google mobile stats, 150M mobile maps users

mobile

At SXSW, Google’s VP of  Location and Local Services, Marissa Mayer, took the stage and dished out some interesting Google data, including mobile stats. During her talk, Mayer revealed the following statistics we found interesting:

  • 40% of all Google Maps usage is from mobile devices, and Christmas and New Years day mobile usage surpassed desktop usage for the first time.
  • 150 million mobile users on Google Maps
  • Google Maps Navigation, included on Android handsets, has guided users 12 billion miles a year, and the latest version with traffic routing saves users 2 years per day in time that would have been spent in traffic.
  • Google Maps could get smarter, and become contextually aware. For instance, if you were trying to catch a flight, Google Maps could see your flight schedule to see when your flight was, then look and analyze real-time traffic data and weather conditions to try and figure out the exact time you should leave
  • Google would like there to be better Google Maps for iPhone. “We like being the default provider, but we’d like to get some of these updates out to a broader audience. That’s still a debate/question we’re considering.”

With Google’s Android explosion continuing, it looks like there will plenty more Google Maps and Navigation users over the next few years.

Voice guided turn-by-turn would be a great addition to other mobile platforms.

There is only one mobile platform that really matters and it has this already! ;)

2 years per day isn’t a lot when you have 150M users. Even if, say, only 1M used the app that day that would still amount to a little over a minute saved. And you probably lose that minute anyways setting up the device + address.

I wish they gave average daily use stats instead of this overall usage number. That would have meant a lot more than this 150M number we got instead.

    • Steve Hillshire

If it really mattered that much, maybe they would have.

      • sirpaul

And you don’t think it does? The quoted number could include people that use the app once a month, whereas what we care about is the number of actual frequent users.

Don’t let the facts get in the way of touting googles growth.

Shouldn’t it be: traffic routing saves users 2 days per year in time that would have been spent in traffic.

      • sirpaul

That’s what I thought at first as well, but I Googled the story and everybody else is saying the same thing – 2 years per day.

Who is “we”? Do you have a mouse in your pocket?

Is that the Internet Explorer Browser I see behind her?

    • Shawn Guse

Ha, good one. That picture looks like it’s from the 1980′s. They didn’t have chrome then. Opps.

Ya maybe google should stick with search and maps. Lol because there operating systems suck.

    • sirpaul

At least “there” spelling doesn’t suck…

      • Anonymous

        Sorry teach. THEIR. Happy.

      • sirpaul

        yep :)

      • eam

No, it’s “their”. “They’re” would be saying “They are operating systems suck”.

      • Anonymous

Their, There, They are or they’re operating systems suck.

    • Anonymous

At least “there” operating system can handle “there” Google Maps.

      • Anonymous

My systems where handling their google maps before they had a operating system.

      • sirpaul

        Edit: replied to wrong person.

      • Anonymous

Really? You modded iOS to handle two finger tilt gestures, google navigation, and city level 3D recreation? Nice work!

      • http://twitter.com/WixosTrix Edwin Rodriguez

@ kyle4miller, thats all new stuff. had the technology been there for say, Windows Mobile, it could handle them same for the original iPhone, hence macboy15′s statement, “…since before they (Google) had an operating system.”

An operating system, not a operating system.
It looks like your trolling is to hasty to grammar check.

@ walter sobchak. The master troll calling someone a troll. Your AN a-hole.

      • sirpaul

        @Walter

Don’t mean to be an ass, but it’s “too hasty” not “to hasty”.

      • John

        @macboy15

        I think you meant: “You’re* an a-hole”

        Welcome. ;)

Some apple fans are just so use to having generally incorrect information fed to them, that they regurgitate smoke out the same way it was blown into them. Via their @$$*$!

Google Maps was a solution looking for an answer back when it started (who cares about competition with MapQuest).

Mobile was the answer, and HTML made it platform friendly. Nib at all the previous custom or Flash-based implementations (Yahoo, etc).

Google Maps / Navigation on my Evo 4G is really super impressive. Although I have navigation in my car, I don’t find any use for it as my phone can take on all my needs to find places and navigate to them. No wonder PNAV sales are in the dumpster.

    • Anonymous

@John C. How about your battery life and os on your evo is that super impressive? The one I had sure wasn’t it went back after 4 days.

      • http://twitter.com/endlessct9a John C.

I wasn’t talking about battery life as you can clearly see in my post but since you bring it up. I can usually get through an entire day without having to charge. By the time I have to charge, it’s down to about 15%.

Google Maps will be full of advertisements soon. I hope they will not be too obtrusive.

  • Shawn Guse

Dang. That is a lot of apps. Business must be good.

For us Goofans (aka Apple Haters) Marissa Mayer is the equivalent of Adriana Lima! Still NYCLady is the one for me personally!
