Apple pushes iMovie update, GarageBand for iPad to the App Store

Software

During last week’s iPad 2 media event, Apple announced an update to the iOS version of its iMovie video editing application and introduced a new version of its GarageBand audio application for the iPad. Like the iPad 2, GarageBand and the updated iMovie were given a March 11th release date, but like iOS 4.3 the applications have made themselves available a little early. Both apps extend the multimedia capabilities of the iPad, with on-device video and audio viewing, editing, and sharing — the iPhone will not have access to GarageBand 1.0. Both applications are priced at $4.99 and available immediately in the App Store.

I could never give up the convenience of editing a video on a laptop for that which the iPad offers. I do see this being useful when, for instance, you are traveling and want to make a quick video of departure from airport, landing, short clips from hotel, etc. and want to quickly post them on youtube or facebook. Pretty cool in the right situations :) Way to go Apple.

iMovie is for iPad 2 only! Even though the A4 processor is the same as the iPhone 4. Disappointing.

Indeed it is. It can’t even be related to the 256mb of RAM on iPad1 because iPod Touch4 also has 256mb. I think it was re-developed only as iPad2 bait. I really doubt they are making money at 4.99$ for the App. Same for Garage Band I assume.

      Not ‘Disappointing’, just ‘Apple’.

No – many people are missing a key point of iMovie for the iPad 2-
TV journalism. Taking and ipad 2 into the field would allow a reporter to conduct and shoot an interview,
shoot accompanying video, edit the video with iMovie, including dissolves, and titles ( supers ), and feed the ‘ package ‘ back to the station. That’s the new
super-economical tv journalism model. It’s not especially pretty, but when stations start to adopt the method it will be VERY effective. Sometimes Apple does a good job of looking into the future. Sometimes…

My installed version of iMovie for iPhone4 was updated today… It’s a universal app – do I need to RE-buy it for the iPad 2 I’m buying tomorrow?? Anyone? I would think that “universal” means “universal,” no?

Nope it’s updated.. it’s now the exact same app for iPhone4/iPad2. You wouldn’t be able to re-buy it even if you wanted to.

you don’t need to buy it again
