64GB iPhone ‘engineering prototype’ smuggled out of Foxconn [video]

mobile

Blog M.I.C. Gadget has acquired an interesting treasure from China, a 64GB iteration of Apple’s iPhone. Rumors of the existence of a high-capacity iPhone have been circulating the web for the last few days, but this is the first time we’ve been treated to crystal clear images and video of the handset. The device, for the most part, looks identical to the current iPhone 4, but bears its closest resemblance to the lost iPhone purchased by Gizmodo last year. The 64GB iPhone, which is being described as an “engineering prototype,” lacks the plus and minus engravings on the volume keys and the silver ring which the surrounds the camera lens is also absent — both omissions on Gizmodo’s model as well. The device has a model number 995-6049LL, is running iOS 4.1, and is not SIM-locked. The faux model number and FCC ID engraved on the back of M.I.C.’s device also match those found on the Giz model. The device certainly does seem to be authentic, and if so, our only question is whether this is what we should expect to see announced this spring, or if this is a pre-iPhone 4 release prototype. We’re hoping for the latter. Hit the jump to check out the video and a few extra images.

Does it have the wifi’s? Or the GB’s?

    • Anonymous

      not in 2011..

  • Wachawant

Note the white iphone in the background…

  • Dallaswirelessguys

    Ummm ya….white iPhone.

    • Wachawant

In the first picture, on the right, dudes holding a white one.

Jesus, who could miss that? Its not like its Waldo or anything. Interweb people scare me sometimes.

  • Kaz

why don’t iPhone users just add an SD card for more memory? Oh, yeah…

    • Anonymous

Right? The micro USB slot is was first initiated to mobile phones by DROID so as usual crApple would just be copying from DROID.

      • Mr_marvelous30127

Lol that’s not true! My black jack 1 AND 2 had micro a micro SD slot! And those were windows mobile phones YEARS ago

      • Anonymous

        EDIT – wrong window

      • Anonymous

You mean MicroSD and old feature phones had them for ages. First it was MiniSD then MicroSD. As funny as you may sound sometimes, it is pretty obvious you’re >16.

      • Kaz

yes, I am WELL over 16… :) I still can’t figure out how to fit my floppy disk into my android phone…

      • Anonymous

blackberry/nokia had this since before you were born.

kind of like like windows 7 phones, add a SD card…Oh wait…don’t do that you’ll brick the phone.

So far, other than the aluminum body iPhone 5, I haven’t heard many rumors of anything new so this wouldn’t surprise me at all. Add to that the Apple history of disappointing product upgrades (iPad 2 anyone?) And this totally makes sense. Hopefully Apple surprises me one day and hauls out a decent product refresh that doesn’t disappoint.

3D Garageband on the iPad 2 will be FANTASTIC. and it’s the same pricing as last year anyway..

  • Flibber

If the phone has emissions, they have real problems.

    • Joebloggs

Ah, I see you fixed that.

Someone’s trying to give Jobs a heart attack

  • Fastwalking

You can’t believe this is the iphone 5 – same body, same screen – who would buy it simply for additional storage. Apple is a marketing company and even they could not sell this.

I think that after the fiasco last year and Gizmodo stealiong their thunder, they are intentionally misleading everyone with sporatic “leaks” of different possible iterations so we are all surprised in June – and the competition will not have had the opportunity to copy them before the release.

This is probably an engineering prototype. Just like car manufacturers often test new tech in currently available vehicles, tech companies do the same thing.

Personally I don’t think more than 32GB is needed now, I have 1000 songs on my phone, 60 apps, and I still have 17GB available for use on a 32GB phone. I could see a need for more storage if 1080P video recording came to mobile phones. I am sure it is only a matter of time.

Apple must be laughing its ass off at how people can’t wait to start speculating at prototypes that maybe even more than an year old but they will be more than happy this time around as the final product that will be launched this time around may not the same shown above and the last iPhone leak totally killed the suspense and thrill of the iPhone 4 launch last year.

if the world finally got on board with USB 3.0 that’d be something. soon though

Scratch that. I don’t feel like dealing with angry ifans.

  • Geokaplan

The phone had “emissions” on it? Mercy, I hope they were careful in handling it. Seriously, doesn’t anybody proofread this site?

    • http://www.bgr.com Andrew Munchbach

Proofread?! No way, I just blindly mash my hands against the keyboard and hope sentences come out :) Yes, we proofread, but a misplaced “e” for an “o” is difficult to catch (especially when the result is an actual word). The mind sort of sees what it wants to see, especially if you write all day. Thanks for pointing it out though, it’s fixed.

    Omissions

This makes me happy because, let’s be honest, it means that other companies will follow suit. Combine 64GB of internal storage with the (inevitable) 64GB of microSD storage, and I’ll be a very happy camper.

  • jakob

i want the one with the bigger G.B.s

  • jakob

iphone 1 to 2, the aluminun went byebye to the stupid round plastic back. 2 to 3, no change. 3 to 4, now lets have our phone made of glass & aluminum. no reason to backtrack or rethink the exterior a 3rd time.

  • Jake

I like how nobody is stating the obvious. I thought apple was made in america. I like how they have some sort of Chinese Japanese language on the sheets lol. And also i think its funny how they have American money just sitting around. Figures, thats where all our money is going!

Apple products are assembled in China. Many of the parts at Foxconn in China, which is where that picture seems to be originating from. However yes, they are designed in California, just not produced.

  • GT

Perfect, that means I do not have to buy a new phone this year. Did everyone notice the different antenna design, one that is incorporated into the apple logo on the back?

  • HeidiHoo

Smuggled out? Who’s going to have to die this time?

  • Anonymous

i preferred the older design of the 3G, but hope v5 will be different than all. and if they released a 120gb, I would sell my Zune the same day!

  • RudyH

Sweet, just in time for SanDisk’s 128 GB microSD cards for everyone else to be released this year.
    Come on Apple…

  • LetsGoCellular

It’s an old model. The serial shows that it was produced in week 9 of 2010 and it is running software version 4.1 yet has the 1.59.00 baseband which means it was jailbroken.

  • zps

it’s about time. sadly, they should have doubled the iPad 2′s storage capacity. i don’t understand how we can’t get past 64gbs on almost any devices.
