Sprint preparing massive CTIA unveiling: Nexus S 4G, EVO 3D, and EVO View

mobile

U.S. wireless carrier Sprint was noticeably absent from both CES and MWC, but if this latest rumor comes to fruition, we think we know why. According to Engadget, the nation’s third largest wireless carrier plans to unveil no less than three high-end devices at CTIA Wireless in Orlando this month. What’s on the menu? The Samsung Nexus S 4G, a standard Nexus S with a WiMAX radio; the EVO 3D, HTC’s spin on the very successful EVO 4G with a 3D screen; and the EVO View, a CDMA version of the HTC Flyer tablet. The rumor is backed up by several Wi-Fi alliance filings from Samsung and HTC, but no concrete evidence has surfaced just yet. The CTIA Wireless conference runs from March 22nd to the 24th, and we’re sure as we get closer to that date, more information will make itself available.

Sprint’s voice and data service was great for me here in New York City on my EVOOOO but, as far as ever going back to Sprint because of an EVOOOO 3D or EVOOOO View Tablet, I would never go back to Sprint because their Customer dis’Service sucks big time and about 90% of their calls are routed to outsourced call centers in foreign countries where they do not speak or understand English.

They should get David Blaine to make their foreign call centers disappear!

How often is one forced to call customer service? I mean, really.

Damn rebate took 4 months because they couldn’t get it right the first time:
        1. First rebate check was never delivered because Sprint omitted the apartment number, even though my rebate form was filled out correctly as, even they were able to verify from their own internal scan.
        2. Second rebate check was rejected by bank because first and last names were misspelled.
        3. Third rebate check finally arrived well after 4 months of having submitted the original mail-in-rebate.

The entire rebate process took over four months but, what was most infuriating and frustrating was the level of ineptitude displayed by the 10-12 reps whom I spoke to over the course of the last 2 months, many of whom confirmed for me that their was no specific history in my account regarding the 1st and 2nd botched rebate checks or, even, the status of the 3rd rebate check issue. I found myself having to tediously recount for each rep’ much of what had already been addressed in my many previous calls. In the end, it wasn’t about the stupid $100 rebate but, it was about Sprint’s stupidity and ineptitude.

If I had gotten the rebate in 10 weeks (they say allow 6-8 weeks) and none of the above had happened, I would still have my EVOOOO and Sprint.

I found most of their reps’ incapable of having an intelligent conversation in English and many of them also did not possess a good level of comprension; I reached call centers in Malaysia, Singapore, Dominican Republic, Canada, and [I think] India or Pakistan over the course of last 2 months and none of the call centers or reps’ documented anything in the account history.

Since, I had to endure 2 months of outsourced inept reps’ and the entire rebate process took over 4 months, I think it fitting that Sprint wait 4 months for their precious $180 Early Termination Fee; I cancelled at the end of November 2010, let’s see how I feel in 3 weeks.

PostScript: If it hadn’t been for Sprint royally screwing up the rebate, there never would have been any reason on my part for calling their Customer dis’Service and encountering their inept outsourced call centers over-and-over-and-over again (dangle preposition).

So you’re complaining about Sprint, the company that handles Sprint rebate?

      • Faisalali

        seriously FUCK you man

      • Zarate_salomon

well i been getting always the new models from sprint if i dont get the rebates sometimes was because im lazy i mean that is not sprint foul. i bet most people are just like me i hope some day everything should be instant rebate instead

The guys who work on my car are lousy, but how often do you need a mechanic?

      • Anonymous

That’s a poor analogy. Cars constantly have problems

      • Jdubmcknight

There customer service sucks when you go into a 3rd party store that has “Sprint” as there logo, pay your balance, and then it never goes to sprint. So you go to the 3rd party and tell them sprint didn’t get the payment. Then you go to sprint and you deal with outsourced call centers. Sprint says it’s not there fault. So you go to the 3rd party. AND YOU GO BACK AND FORTH FOR A MONTH AND A HALF… That’s not cool…

Or how about 6 months later when you upgrade to a new plan, and they forget to re-add your unlimited text messages, and you get a bill for an extra 150 dollars. You call and complain and they don’t realize the error is made at the store, so you have to wait 30 days while they figure out what THEY did wrong.

Why am I with sprint stilll? because after that they said they were revamping there structure, and they can’t give me a SERO plan as pardon, they don’t exist anymore, but they’ll be happy to take 30% each phone bill…

That’s why I stay. They suck at handling issues.

    • SprintGuy

It’s actually all done out of Texas…

      • http://beenswank.net brandonmccall

        That’s hard to believe.

      • http://twitter.com/ajac09 Anthony Evans

most Sprint call centers are in the US some in Charlotte , Oklahoma, Texas, Virgina.. I think their is only one left in the phillipinies now.

      • http://beenswank.net brandonmccall

Good to know. They should go ahead and close that one in the Philippines.

    • zukidrvr

That was my experience three years ago. It is no longer true. Their customer service is quite good now. I also find the people in their stores do a good job too.

      • zukidrvr

Oh, your problem was with rebates. That’s totally different than customer care. Most rebates in most companies are outsourced.

When I have questions about my bill, need to change my plan or add international calling when I travel, their help has been professional and accurate. My only gripe is that they no longer offer their reduced price data for international travel to consumers. It was a bargain, unmatched by any other US carrier.

    • Nyynke98

Dude, when was your experience? They have dramatically gotten better since 2005.

      • serpentor

Yeah, I remember when they were charging $$$ to talk to customer service.

    • Jbklyn11226

Still seems like a pretty irrational reason to dump such a great device as the EVO. I’ve called customer service a few times and have always gotten a coherent American Rep on the other side. I find it hard to believe u called over and over and not once got an American to speak to. Besides, in my and I’m sure many others experiences with mail in rebates, they always take forever. No company is fast when it comes to giving customers money. Lol

    • Jbklyn11226

I agree four months for a rebate is extreme. but I still think to cancel service, pay an early termination fee, and go to another carrier because of it is a bit extreme. Besides calling the rebate number did u ever dial *4 and just wait for a real person after it gave u all the automated info? At the very least you could’ve gotten some service credits or free accessories or something, especially if you threatened to leave. The times when I have had issues and called customer service they’ve always been conciliatory and tried to reconcile my problem, sometimes by throwing a little free stuff or discounts on my bill my way. Maybe that’s because when they pull up my info it shows I’m an over 10yr customer. Either way, I would’ve still tried.

      • Anonymous

Actually, the four months for the rebate was never the issue; it was the severe ineptitude I encountered when following-up on the rebate status. As someone wrote, yes it seems as I was ‘the sour apple’ in the minority and, for all intents and purposes, even with the rebate having taken 4 months, if I hadn’t encountered so much ineptitude I would not have cancelled the service. My decision was finally tipped in favor of Verizon when I learned Verizon was to release their own
version of the EVOOOO. I have an old grandfathered Unlimited PDA /Smartphone Data plan on Verizon which, after a corporate discount, is roughly $42 bucks without the now mandated voice plan. In terms of the EVOOOO, it’s the best phone I’ve ever had and used, regardless of what all the Appleheads say. In the end, I really came out ahead because I bought my EVOOOO launch day (6/4/10) and Sprint was running a special in-store promotion, “trade-in up to 3 devices and receive in-store credit towards the purchase of the EVO.” I had 2 old Verizon Krackberrys lying around which (only on EVO launch day) were valued at $50 each (any Blackberry) and, dude, they were not new; I also had an old iPhone 2G that I had traded for something which was valued at $100. Thetefore, I received a $200 in-store credit. I paid $99 plus tax, I can’t recall if their was an activation fee. Factor in the $100 rebate and the fact that before cancelling the service, after swapping out ESN’s on my account, thereby freeing up the EVO, I sold my precious EVOOOO on CL for $350 that, even if I paid them their EFT of $180, I still net a small profit.

Like I said in my orivinal post, I can’t complain about their voice/data network; I had no problems whatsoever with reception.

Finally, I guess I’m blessed with good karma because, once I add a line of service on my Verizon account and
buy the XOOOOOOOOM, I will have a pretty sweet set-up after all of my discounts and still have a combined monthly total bill less than it cost me to have one EVO. And, still be eligible to buy the ThunderBolt¡₣! !!!

        LOL

      • Anonymous

Good luck with verizon’s high ass plans.

      • Anonymous

        @portorokk

Don’t need luck, I have an old grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan for PDA/Smartphone = $42 (after discount) and no data cap.
        :)

      • WMark

I’d be surprised to see VZ apply an old “grandfathered” plan to a new device and give you the subsidized phone price at the same time. You’ll likely pay full price for the new phone so you can apply the old pricing plan.

    • http://twitter.com/skreekia david

JD power has Sprint rated # 1 of all carriers in customer service, you my friend just so happen to be the sour apple. sorry. And leaving Sprint for customer service reasons is like saying you dont go to mcdonalds driver threw anymore cuz they didnt give you the right drink. just plain stupid.

      • Kblznbtz

Take at look at consumer reports on the major carriers….In over all rankings they are only a couple of point ahaed of att..a basic virtual tie for dead last and way behind verizon and tmobile …..check your facts before you spout off….

      • Anonymous

We actually don’t have McDonalds’ drive-thrus here in New York City so, apparently, I am missing out on life.

      • moedelle

Why are you even posting on here PAPINYC if you’re no longer a Sprint customer? Go away…

    • Gruvmyster01

That’s funny because I live in Orlando, FL and there are multiple Sprint Call Centers located here which handle at least 60% of all sprint customer service calls. As well as I have friends that actually work there. Another 30% of which are also located in North America. And ummm, not sure if you know this but Sprint’s customer service has been rated #1 by J.D. Power and Associates the past several years among mobile phone carriers. You were saying?

    • Zarate_salomon

on my experience i dont have those troubles with customer service at sprint so far by the way i just call them when i need replacement phone o new one and always i get those on the next day i live in virginia wich mean that is super fast

  • Securitywiz

If the new evo 3d is dual core, I will my current evo.

    • Securitywiz

Typo, make that “sell my current evo”

      • Cer

        Dood, use the edit function.

  • Anonymous

When is Sprint getting a QWERTY slider with Froyo+, Dual Core, 1g RAM, & a FM radio ?

    • Securitywiz

Probably not until 2012, since they just released the evo shift

    • Anonymous

FM Radio on a phone is nonsense… Get the TUNE IN app…

  • http://beenswank.net brandonmccall

Nobody is interested in an Android tablet that isn’t running Honeycomb. However, I am extremely interested in the Nexus S 4G and the EVO 3D.

    • Anonymous

The DROID EVO 3D 4G sounds like a very interesting device.

      • Cer

Ha. It won’t be called a Droid, but it will be funny if it’s called the EVO 4G 3D or the EVO 3D 4G

    • serpentor

True. I like my 7″ Tab, but now with Honeycomb, I wouldn’t get another tablet until it comes with HC or Android.i

      • Anonymous

Have you played with moto’s Xoom yet? Disappointing. Slow and buggy as all hell. I was really hoping for them to knock one out of the park. Honeycomb is great, and deserves better. I hope HTC has something in the works.

      • serpentor

        Actually, no.

I just know Matias Duarte is in charge of UI now and I’ve loved all his previous work.

My Tab does the job so I can wait for Google to work out the bugs.

  • http://twitter.com/smartphone_info Smartphone Report

I doubt that the Nexus will be a great addition to the Sprint stables – they’ve burned way too many users with the Moment/Intercept/Transform/Epic problems. Many devoted Samsung users may go to the S, but with the history of Sprint and Samsung – I don’t see it being a winner.

I think the gimmicky Evo 3D could be. More than the excitement of 3 new devices is the commitment to WiMax that this signals. There hasn’t been a ‘new’ 4G device coming from Sprint in a few months now – possibly hinting at that LTE move? Now with 3 “confirmed by engadget” devices coming – at least we know the next year is safe for our Evo’s.

  • serpentor

Right now a Nexus S is the only Android phone I’d consider getting just for the ability to use stock Android.

    Glad it’s coming to Sprint.

    • Jorgie

I agree…I hate HTC’s Sense and I dont really like their hardware(cameras suck and speaker phone too). I want the latest stock Android software and the Nexus S would be exactly what I want. I love Samsung phones.

    • Anonymous

Bought a phone with shitty UI?

      Root. Flash. Done.

    • Mariana

Also, since it is a straight-out stock android and a google Nexus phone (even tho made by Samsung), updates will be prompt unlike many other Samsung phones. I’m glad it’s coming to Sprint too, and will get it. Another plus for Sprint is that they already have their “4G” price structure set in place, whereas with Verizon and their Thunderbolts and Bionics you will likely pay out the rear for new price plans before too much longer. Yeah, I can hear it now….we’ll they haven’t announced anything like this. Just wait.

  • Pniko08

This works out perfect, I have an upgrade coming up in May…which one should I go for?

  • Anonymous

In the words of Bart Scott……”Cant Wait!”.

My thing is, if Sprint is partially giving people a heads up…you wonder what they have completely under wraps.

  • Jbklyn11226

I agree. When I came to Sprint I heard the horror stories about customer service. I was pleasantly surprised when I found a sweet sounding American rep, probably from the Midwest, that took care of things quickly and competently. FWIW, I never had many problems with Verizon either.

    • moedelle

Agreed. A few years ago I almost cancelled my Sprint account because of customer service. The difference between now and then is unbelievable. They are SO much better now. I think that dude is actually a Verizon sales person (or executive) blowing smoke to steal Sprint customers.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=587535414 Jacob Achee

I was crossing my fingers they’d be releasing the Galaxy S II. If the Nexus S 4G has the SAMOLED plus, then I’d probably go for that.. One of my only gripes with the Galaxy S series was the pentile display that makes text difficult to read. The color and contrast ratios are gorgeous however.

The EVO 3D could be promising if HTC hits it out of the park like they did with the original!

  • Curllyq22

    Want Nexus S on Verizon!

And the Thunderbolt continues its quick decline into irrelevance . . .
