Samsung denies Galaxy Tab 10.1 overhaul, says tablet will ship as scheduled

Tablets

Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported last week that Samsung was considering making changes to its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet following the unveiling of Apple’s iPad 2. “We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate,” Samsung’s executive vice president of mobile was quoted as having said, leading many to speculate that the tablet might not launch on time. But Samsung denied the report this past Saturday, saying it plans to release its second Galaxy-branded Android tablet on schedule. We took a hands-on look at the Galaxy Tab 10.1 last month and found that it might even best the Motorola XOOM in some areas. We also thought Google’s Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) OS still needed some refinement, however. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 is expected to launch later this month through Vodafone in Europe, and launch details in the U.S. market are not yet available.

If Samsung was really that impressed by the *pad 2, then im really disappointed in them. IMO the tab 10.1 is way better than the *pad 2 as it stands, it runs honey comb has and hd display, better camera, just better overall everything. Samsung pls get a clue.

It’s too bad the market doesn’t agree with you. But I guess the market and Samsung are wrong, and you’re right. Got it.

      • HoneycombFTW

Can you foretell the future???? Since neither the iPad 2 nor the tab are out yet. . . your statement about the market has no merit whatsoever. As with the iPhone, Android will dominate quickly.

      • Anonymous

The iphone is essentially dead at this point. It has gone the way of the razr as just a gimmick. Live widgets and wallpapers FTW!

      • numetheus

No … But it’s called analyzing trends. It’s something every company does. Looking at the demographic who will buy these tablets the most (hint … it’s not tech geeks), they will purchase iPad 2 over this for five reasons. Size (none of them come close to how thin iPad 2 is), brand recognition, battery life, iOS, available applications. If you think people will buy the Android tablets just for specs and virtue of it being an Android OS, you are highly mistaken. The mass consumer is demographic, and for the most part they aren’t tech geeks. They don’t care about specs and know nothing about computing. They just want a tablet they can use, and brand recognition and marketing will hook them. Am I predicting the future? Kind of. Understanding the market and anyzing trends is as close as you can come. It’s like weather forecasters. If you don’t believe me, keep these words in your mind for a few months. When you find I am right, imagine me in your head saying … “told you so!”

So sales means a better product? Explain that logic to my Ford and Chevy friends as Toyota is having all these recalls yet sold the most cars.

      • Ohreally

Thats funny both for and chevy outsell toyota in the U.S.

      • Jroc869

ipad2 equals refreshed original ipad. everyone knows, even the apple fan boys that the ipad2 isnt what the ipad three will be. its very lackluster.

      • numetheus

And the masses won’t care. It’s just tech geeks on tech blogs like this who will care. We are a very small percentage. I’m willing to bet iPad 2 will outperform the tablets coming out.

    • Anonymous

Ok. I love DROID too, but no one comes close to crApples cameras. I know it goes against everything on the fanDROID code, but some times specs don’t matter.

      • Anonymous

Whaaaaaaat!! This is coming from you. Lol, I do agree I wish more androids fans would admit this. Just so u know there nothing wrong being a fanboy, it’s being a extremist is the problem. But yea specs aren’t everything, it’s the total package

      • Scorp

Yeah it’s nothing wrong with supporting a specific brand or company. But when you let logic leave you and nonsense takes over everything you say based on your hatred for one company, that’s when it’s too much.

android is essentially dead at this point with the android market full of malicious and pirated apps. That is the reason Nexflix refuses to come to the android market citing lack of security.

The android market is a scary place to shop. criminals put their malicious apps in the android market because there is no approval process.

never a good sign when an EVP admits that parts of a product are “inadequate” before it is even released

    • Generatione

      agree

      • Anonymous

lol, can you imagine an EVP of Boeing saying just before pax get on the new 787 “we will have to improve the wings that are inadequate”

    • HoneycombFTW

The VP didn’t say that some parts are “inadequate.”

He said they would update parts that are inadequate. . . compared to the iPad 2 no parts are inadequate.

      • Anonymous

Oh, ok…clearly I misunderstood his language about replacing “inadequate parts” (his words, not mine). Clearly he was talking about something else entirely, like pizza…or coral reefs.

      • HoneycombFTW

        clearly!

    • Anonymous

Actually Samsung has issued a correction. What he really said was:
“We will have to improve the parts that are quite smooth.”

      • Anonymous

LOL- but apparently the EVP doesnt think there are any since the device is inadequate.

      • numetheus

Because thickness equals smooth. Because people love lower real time battery life.

Ship as scheduled for 1/2 price if they want to actually compete with the iPad.

    • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

why? pricing on Xoom and this are adequate for its features as compared to the similar iPads.

      • Anonymous

Saying you compete with the “same GB models” is meaningless when the “same GB models” don’t include the most successful model. The iPad average selling price last quarter was $600, meaning the $499 model outsold all of the 3G models and the 64 Gb wi-fi only combined. Neither the 10.1 Galaxy Tab nor the Xoom compete with the $499 model. Therefore, they don’t compete.

      • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

        wtf ever… lol.

By this time next year when all of the news reports show how Android tablets have dominated the tablet market just as android phones have… we’ll see the average price is the same.

Why? because unlike apple, Android makers will offer sales and prices will be lower than any iPad through deals with carriers for 3G models that iPad won’t see.

Kinda like how after 1month on the market, I was able to secure two Samsung Fascinates for FREE from Best Buy.

You won’t even get that with a 2yr old iProduct. Apple just doesn’t allow it.

So, argueing on launch price is just pointless as 2-3 months in, the Xooms and GTabs will have far more competition from other Android makers and will offer sales. This is why I’ll pick up a tablet around Xmas.

I’ll get a FAR better Android tablet for like $200, from a name brand manufacturer too.

      • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

also, of course the lower priced iPad sells more, there is no other difference than GB.

the Xoom and GTab have better cameras, flash, better connection choices, better RAM, among other features….

        Simply worth more.

      • Anonymous

Android set a precedent with heavily discounted, BOGO, and subsidized phones. The tablets, regardless of specs, are going to have to follow suit. Of course the try Android fans that do very awesome and amazing things with the Android OS will buy these devices up like water. But it’s all about market share. Apple has dominated the tablet market. Only way Android will do so is to undercut Apple’s price.

      • Anonymous

Not necessarily. Honeycomb makes a lot more sense on a tablet than iOS. iPhone started out on top too. But, at some point, a combination of functionality and accessible can trump price. You don’t get to #1 like android just by being cheap, this is why brand names exist. You have to have clout, and android has earned it.

      • Anonymous

Let us all be a little honest here. If someone is going to buy an iPad with iOS on board who are they going to buy it from?

If someone is going to buy a honeycomb tablet who are they going to buy it from?

Apple has no one to worry about in regards to a “competing” product. They have no need to change their price unless the honeycomb tablets take off. Flip that coin and all of the OHA members have to compete with each other to gain each sale of a honeycomb tablet. The only way to really compete is by price. It is a race to the bottom with zero chance of survival. Their margins have to already be razor thin. If they have to resort to cutting prices they will begin to lose money on each sale in a market that is very new and very very small.

Be a fan of what you like but at least be honest to the business side of things.

      • HoneycombFTW

I guess that’s why all the Android handset makers are having the highest profits they’ve ever had. . . Apple fans have been running that argument up the flag poll for years. All because Steve Jobs wants boutique priced items. News flash, Apple has the highest markup on hardware. . . by a long shot. Normal people know better than to pay that exorbitant of a markup. And hardware manufacturers will do well with Android and have good prices.

    • Anonymous

yeah, it’s ironic, for years the hategirls berated apple as only providing overpriced hardware, not able to compete; now the tables have turned 180, Apple has perhaps the most cost competitive device

      • Anonymous

It is kinda funny. Just goes to show that Apple has a nailed down everything from supplier contracts, manufacturing, and of course the every impressive Apple Hype machine.

Android tablets are nice… but they will never sell volumes like the iPad unless they are dirt cheap.

      • HoneycombFTW

You clearly haven’t bothered to see what prices are out there. You can pick up a tablet similar to the first iPad for $200 to $300 easily.

These current “high priced honeycomb” tablets are top of the line, not even the iPad 2 comes close to the hardware. . . so get a clue about costs instead of spewing Steve’s regurgitation.

      • Anonymous

Really, can you provide a link to a $200 tablet with exactly equal or better specifications (both hardware and apps) to the iPad, for $200. I’d LOVE to see that.

So, please support your position with evidence.

      • Anonymous

        …the silence is deafening…

      • http://pileofnearmisses.tumblr.com pileofnearmisses

Ha, now you’re making things up. Show us a couple of tablets similar to the iPad 1 for $200-$300. Since this is “easily” done, show two or three models that are available now.

      • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

        1. He said similar, not exact or equal.
        2. Similar is probably used as they will all be 7″ vs 10″.
        3. While they have a lower total app count (as Android does vs iOS) the hardware and OS are very much the same, i.e. similar.
        4. Just use Google for your examples and quit being a dbag. There are many lower brand names of Android 2.x based tablets for 7″ starting around $200.. at least that was the case during xmas.

For ‘examples’ of these “similar” tablets, I went to Google. Searched “Android Tablet” and clicked the “Shopping” option on the left. The first paged showed well over a dozen android based tablets that could easily be considered “similar” to iPad1 with a price range of $130 to $400.

      • Anonymous

Ok, so give a tablet brand and price that has bascially equivalent specs (screen size, resolution, processor, battery life, streaming capability, and app number) as the iPad. I’m really curious as I cant find one and as it sounds from you, there are a dozen or more.

      • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

@DigDug2010… for someone with such an awesome screen name, you fuckin’ kill me.

        1. Not going to include app count as that is not that important when both have 100′s of thousands of apps. Yes, iOS has more, but realistically you can get whatever you want from which ever. However, I can’t wait for this year to pass and Android to be above iOS in pure app count just so people like you will STFU about it.

        2. Keep in mind, this is only to find tablets $200-$300 that are “similar” to the first iPad. This means there can be a difference here or there, just mostly the same.

        3. iPad’s other specs: 9.7″ screen, 1GHz CPU, 16 to 32GB flash memory, no cameras, 256MB RAM, 1024×768 resolution, single proprietary connection.

** It won’t let me post a link. All of this were found on the first page of Amazon by searching “android tablet” **

        4. **Very first result** Superpad 10.2″ ($199): 10.2″ screen, 1GHz CPU, 2GB internal (SD card slot up to 32GB), front camera (no spec detailed), 256MB Ram, 1024×600 resolution, Ports: 2 x USB 2.0 AND 2 x MicroSD Slots AND Mini HDMI AND RJ45 Ethernet (oohh wired or wireless). CLEARLY this is all I need to verify that it is “similar” to the first iPad and is actually only $200. Even if you add in a 32GB SD card, you’re still well under the $300 threshhold. Hell, this actually has a few better features with the camera and standard connections. But, its screen is definitely inferior.
        5. **Still on first page** Zenithink 10″ ($199): 10″ screen, 1.2 GHz CPU, 2GB internal (SD card slot up to 32GB), no camera, 256MB Ram, 1024×600 resolution, 3 x USB and a SD Card slot, wifi only

7-n. Several 7″ models with similar features, but again a lower quality screen. All $130 to $199.

I stopped here as it was taking longer to type this up than find results to prove you wrong.

This will be good competition for Motorola, LG and the other OHA members. It is just a shame that Apple still has no rival.

    • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

      Pathetic iSheep mentality.

Xoom and GTab10.1 match and exceed anything in iPad2 for a similar price for same GB models.

      • Anonymous

how many apps does xoom currently have available?

      • Jayman

lol who care about that seriously shut the fuck up punk ass bitch

      • Anonymous

Because mobile devices rely on apps as a core of their functionality; and SuperChunk said, and let me quote, “Xoom and GTab10.1 match and exceed anything in iPad2…”

So, I happen to be curious how many apps are available on the Xoom and iPad; presumably (based on the above), Xoom must have as many apps or more as iPad.

      • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

The apps on android scale to the newer build. It did not start over. Only thing is now a dev can build new views that take advantage of the larger screen.

This is in no way different than when iPad launched with its new larger screen. Older iOS apps could load as is or be modified to scale to a larger screen better.

      • Anonymous

But you said Xoom and GTab “match and exceed ‘anything’ [emphasis added] in iPad2…” Certainly app content has to be included in the term “anything.”

So which is it…do both Xoom and GTab as many apps as iPad2 will on March 11 (i.e., this Friday), or not?

I just want to know if your very broad statement is accurate or not.

      • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

So you’re real point is that iOS has more apps than Android… nothing tablet specific.

Which is just a stupid argument considering any app a person wants will be available on either device. Maybe not the same dev, but if you search, you can find it.

        Also, hows your flash pages?

… and I was obviously talking about hardware.

      • Anonymous

I wasnt making an argument of any type. I was just hoping you could provide support (evidence) for your argument that the Xoom and GTab “match and exceed ‘anything’ in iPad2.”

It’s a simple yes or no issue: Do both the Xoom and GTab “match and/or exceed” the # of apps available for iPad2, per your position, or not?

A simple yes or no will suffice. So, can you support your broad statement?

      • HoneycombFTW

That’s it. . . go with the app argument because Apple has no other advantage at this point. Honeycomb wipes the floor with iOS–that overblown iPod touch OS or should we just call it what it is, an app launcher and not even a real OS.

However, let’s remember that Steve jobs released the iPhone and told devs to use the web as the platform. Well, Honeycomb with the full browser takes advantage of that so out of the box it has thousands of web apps–you know those little things like Google dos, Zoho, Office Live, web email, tons of games, etc. . . and PC/console games are being ported for Tegra 2 because it can handle it with the added GPU & RAM, but the iPad 2 can’t. And as other’s have pointed out, Android is designed intelligently to handle app scaling properly. . . Apple apparently can’t figure that out. So anything designed according to Android 1.6 SDK will be fine for tablets, and devs can go further with fragments. . . in other words, Honeycomb has left iOS in the dust!

      • Anonymous

Again, you have to read (much) more carefully. I wasn’t making an argument of any type. I asked a simple question since he said Xoom and GTab match or exceed “anything” in iPad. So I’ll try one more time and keep is as easy as possible..

Do Xoom and GTab have as many total apps as iPad? Yes or No (please circle one).

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR6HpRLyzMY Walter Sobchak

You haven’t played with a xoom have you?
Apps scale perfectly. It isn’t like iPhone and ipad fragmentation where an app is shown in 1/4 of the space and you hit a 2x button to get a terribly pixelated app in half the window.

      • Anonymous

No, I havent played with a xoom or an iPad (ir a Gtab for that matter).

I was just trying to verify (by someone, anyone) if Xoom and GTab have as many apps as the iPad, as claimed by SuperChunk. But he got real silent and I guess cannot answer my question and support his statement.

I just think if people are going to make statements of fact, they should be able to back them up.

      • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

I never claimed that had equal total count of apps. I was comparing hardware to hardware. You’re just a dbag who is trying to be coy by saying “oh what about the apps!!!111eleven”.

      • Jroc869

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck is what i want to say everytime some isheep references apps. you need more apps because without apps you couldnt do shit with your ios phone,mp3 player,or tablet. android has made great headway and will continue to do so in the future as far as apps go, but the truth of the matter is if you took the apps away and compared the functionality of the phones, you would find that Android out performs ios on any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

      • Anonymous

Superchunk, your exact words, and I quote, were: “Xoom and GTab10.1 match and exceed *anything* in iPad2..”

You did not limit your parameters to hardware (specifically, you used the term ‘anything’), and clearly apps are crucial to any tablet’s ecosystem. So, again, I ask for like the 5th time, do Xoom and GTab “match and exceed” iPad2 in the number of available apps, a simple yes or no?

      • Anonymous

By the end of the year sales will prove which product(s) consumers want.

      • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

yep… just like the smart phone market….. Android.

  • Anonymous

I’m sure many will disagree, but I think Samsung builds some fantastic stuff. Their panels can’t be touched (see what I did thar?) and out of all of the android OEMs, their hardware seems to run the OS with the least amount of hiccups…though I don’t like Touchwiz.

If ONLY the materials they used were a little more solid. It confuses me that the manufacturer who makes some of the best performing and sexiest TVs can struggle so much with handheld materials…

    • Jroc869

they are terrible with updates, that would be my only knock on them

  • Anonymous

Is this another translation mistake? I actually preferred the original report, at least Samsung was being honest that what they are offering won’t fare well against the iPad 2.

  • Anonymous

Uh…the entire android market? Most of which upscale to fit the device. And, the new influx of android tablets has sent developers scrambling to add compatibility if it’s not already there…My advice: Pull your head out of the ass of Apple’s marketing campaign and realize that “60k apps” =/= better.

iOS has more available applications than Android….But Android consistently outsells iphone, and consumers prefer it. Find better arguments.

    • Anonymous

Unfortunately there aren’t better arguments. Your “android consistently outsells iPhone” point ignores that no other one company that sells android phones does and also ignores all the cheap and BOGO android offers as well.

Until android can do the same in the tablet market (ie saturate the market and undercut the iPad’s prices) it isn’t going to outsell anything

      • Booboolala2000

It called market share. Android tablets will do the same as they did with phones. Multiple choices, carriers and manufacturers. The app community knows this and knows that tablets are largely a luxury item usually attached with disposable incomes. And that is where the money is, disposable incomes.

      • Anonymous

i guess the App community really doesn’t know, cuz recent stats show iTunes AppStore generating 90+% of all app store revenue. Android’s market share and android’s app sales are clearly poorly correlated.

      • Anonymous

BOGO offers are through vendors, not manufacturers. If Apple allowed it, Verizon and AT&T would be pitching out iphone bogo offers like candy, but contractual agreements get in the way of that. Still, you haven’t argued against me…Android handsets are more popular (e.g., sell more) than iPhones….The android tablet market is still very young, and I give it 18 months before it controls the most market share. Yes, they WILL saturate the market, and that’s not a bad thing. Doesn’t matter if you win the race with a cheaper car, you’ve still won the race.

    • Anonymous

The problem with the “idea” that Android consistently outsells iPhone is that it is fundamentally incorrect. As a whole absolutely Android OS devices outsell iPhone but per manufacturer and device nothing comes close. Each quarter that Apple sells more iPhones they are also selling more iPod Touches, more iPads, more media and Apps in the iTunes store.

For Android to seriously affect Apple’s business the sales are going to need to be 8 to 1. That isn’t going to happen. Not only that but no company has the After purchase financing that Apple has. Acer is trying to build out in the same vertical fashion as well as Sony. Companies are starting to realize that even without building the OS yourself, you still have to have some “lock”.

Microsoft’s “lock” was corporate licenses and they executed on genius levels with that. After corporations spent hundreds of millions and Billions even on their product they just keep spending because of the heavy investment already.

Apple’s “lock” is iTunes. They touted it again this week by letting the world know that they have 200 Million iTunes account holders that are paying for Media and Apps For most of these individuals they will always have Apple devices. Which means their kids will always have Apple devices. As they grow the number of stores they operate and the number of retailers (worldwide) that they partner with all of these numbers will grow.

Will Android continue to grow? Probably, or stay flat. Not one company has emerged has the DELL or HP equivalent and that is desperately needed with HP bringing WEB OS and RIM Bringing QNX.

Apple is a growth company, with growing products and platforms across the board. Until someone stops that every tech company on the planet is on notice. The difference between those tech companies and you…………. they realize they are screwed.

      • Booboolala2000

Apples growth in iTunes has slowed dramatically over the last year. Maybe this year we will se iTunes jailbroken. I am one of those 200 mil and haven’t purchased anything in iTunes for the last two years. Sure I am nit the only one that likes to listen to their music and watch videos however they want.

  • Dan

Why is Samsung crapping their pants over this? As long as they don’t charge more than $500 for their 10″ tablet, they’ll be fine.

    • Anonymous

They have a 16GB from jump street, so they *should* be able to hit that target. I’d like that 32GB wifi-only model for $600, Alex…err, Dan.

  • Anonymous

If you know anything at all about marketing you’d see a huge problem in this. Apple has forged itself as a “premium” brand, maintaining a higher price point is very important to their brand equity. Apple trying to compete on price is like Mercedes trying to compete directly with Hyundai. Given their brand, they shouldn’t have to, and it will only confuse consumers.

    • Anonymous

If I were you, I would send your resume into Apple immediately. Surely after the interview they will suddenly recognize the depth of their problems and hire you to avoid the apparent bankruptcy that looms overhead.

The new douchebag reign has a little penis and needs his iPhone to look smaller so his man vag will look bigger. Plus he owns two shares in apple. So he/she is always concerned about what and how people feel about apple vs Android.

    • http://pileofnearmisses.tumblr.com pileofnearmisses

“maintaining a higher price point is very important to their brand equity”
If so, then why is the year-old iPad cheaper than every competing tablet, even all the ones that haven’t made it to market yet?

      • Anonymous

That’s exactly what I’m wondering. My first guess is that they want to get rid of the inventory to move people along, so it makes sense for the iPad 1 I guess. But, making it a competitive point for their NEW product to have a cheaper price than the others is a very different direction for Apple, to say the least.

  • HoneycombFTW

I bet the Samsung VP was making a sarcastic remark. . . noting that the iPad 2 really brought nothing other than it’s thinner–whoop de do!

What specs would Samsung need to update? NONE! No one cares how thin it is except Steve.

    • tambo

fat chance, native Koreans don’t really do sarcasm. they do, however, express a sort of self deprecation publically on issues seen to be of nationalistic importance — which doesn’t really parse well over here.

      double losses in translation.

    • Anonymous

Actually, no one other than geeks/nerds care about specs. Real users and consumers want a light, easy to use device. Specs are a replacement for nerds sporting small pen!ses.

      • Anonymous

That’s because “real users” are not very smart. We Goofans (aka Apple Haters) know that it requires an advanced intellectual capacity to deal with Android and that’s the way we like it. We don’t want these “simpletons” that are Apple fanboys on our side of the fence.

    • Anonymous

If, quote, “no one cares how thin it is,” then why is seemingly every manufacturer out there consistently trying to build thinner mobile devices, and commenting on said thinness in marketing stuff? If “no one cares” about thinness, why are device makers not making devices much much thicker to easily accommodate longer duration batteries, more components, etc.? Why do device reviewers very frequently comment about device thinness (or, thickness)? Why do they refer to devices as “pocketable” or “bricks?”

I would contest your belief that absolutely “no one” cares about device thinness. Perhaps we could put your position to a test…create two mobile devices, lets say phones, with the exact same “functional specs” (camera resolution, battery life, etc.) (and weight), but have one the thickness dimensions of say a Galaxy S, and the other the dimensions of a 1980s motorola brick phone. Sell them for the exact same price. See which one sells more.

I’ll put a wager that the thinner one would sell more, and by large margins. But heck, maybe you’re right and absolutely “no one” cares about device thinness.

iPad 2 didn’t have to bring much to the table. But a little spec upgrade, thinner and different design. It’s there 2nd device. Android os devices that are competitive are just showing up or have not even shown up yet. Apple started the tablet market of today last year just like they started the smartphone of today in 07′. Was not for then there be no tablets. People should be thanking them for getting the ball rolling. Instead of the hate.

Android is soooo powerful that all you have to do is install Android on bare hardware and Android builds the whole thing for you. It even creates hardware and specs. Android is AI to the nth degree.

I predict they will sell tens of dozens of these.

We already know that Samsung doesn’t mind pushing out questionable products so this is not news.
