Microsoft paid more than $1 billion to keep Nokia away from Android?

Business

According to a report filed by Bloomberg, Windows Phone maker Microsoft will pay Finnish handset manufacturer Nokia more than $1 billion as part of the two companies “smartphone software agreement.” The publication cites “two people with knowledge of the terms,” and goes on to note that Nokia will be responsible for paying Microsoft a “fee for each copy of Windows [Phone] used.” It’s widely assumed that the purported agreement, and fee, were part of Microsoft’s campaign to keep Android off of Nokia hardware. The duration of the deal is being reported as “over five years.” Nokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop, has publicly stated that he wants Nokia branded hardware running Windows Phone software in market before the close of 2011.

It’s going to take a lot more than that to keep the world away from the Android revolution! We are getting there Goofans (aka Apple Haters.) We are getting to our dream of 100% market share for Google on EVERYTHING technology! Soon we will have everything free and totally open!!!!!!

    • bil1

and totally open for criminals to put pirated and malicious apps in the android market. That’s why there is no nexflix in the android market due to security reasons.

You got trolled. Best ignore than feed.

      • http://twitter.com/aergern aergern

Wrong. It’s because they want it DRM’d before hand. Netflix was spotted on an Android phone at CES so it’s not far off … and as far as the malware on the market … Apple has been attacked in the past as well. It’s not an Android OS / Android Market issue .. they’ve all had it happen. Google just needs better screening processes.

      • GooFanNumeroUno

Where and when has iOS been attacked? Jailbroken phones don’t count. Please provide citations as to when attacks against iOS has occurred.

      • Anonymous

They do need to at least screen apps for malware. No one is saying that they should go as far as Apple and restrict functionality, just check they are not malicious.

I don’t understand this whole deal with being “open.” It’s not like things get any better. Like there really is free stuff. The most I do with my “open” and rooted phone is customization of my intereface. Yah, wireless tethering is cool but drains battery life like no other. Taking pics of my phone is cool but kinda useless for me. Show off my phone … nah. Kinda too old for that. Apps on Android are whatevers and they make my phone lag. My best app is alarm clock extreme. If I want to watch a movie in hd, it’ll be at home on my flatscreen. I rarely use my phone for productivity … I just do it at home. I’m not going to pose and act like my open phone is awesome. It’s just a phone. I would like it to run smoothly and last longer than 12 hours (with limited use).

The thing is… it’s nto that Android is open SOURCE that makes it desirable.. it’s that it’s an open platform that even w/o any coding or flashing, we can customize the interface for how WE want it to work. I’ll take a bit of lag for it to look like what i want and have access to the tools and widgets the way i want them.

      • Anonymous

That’s Dedfrt’s argument. All the rooting, futzing with it can cause more battery drain, and problems. Just because it’s OPEN, doesn’t mean it’s better. It’s gaining market share for one reason only; its a free OS. The market is flooded with various devices, with varying versions of Android, and varying degrees of success. Again, just because it’s free doesn’t mean better.

Other than Android, what else about Google is open? Oh that’s right, their crappy Chrome OS thing…FAIL. GMAIL? Oh that’s right…the free email service that lost over 150,000 mailboxes..FAIL.

I’ll continue to use their SE…it works. Beyond that, I don’t use anything they make. It’s mostly crap, and I can afford better alternatives.

  • http://twitter.com/ChazClout ChazClout

Does this make up for Nokia’s plummeting share price?

    • Love2track

They’ve lost 25% since the announcement. That equates to roughly $10 billion in market cap. Smart move. If I were an investor, I’d be pissed.

  • bobc74

Now why in the world would Nokia want to use Android? It’s not like Android isn’t becoming the dominant smartphone operating system. (Note the scarasm). I just hope for all the employees sake, this doesn’t turn out poorly for Nokia.

    • Anonymous

Exactly. I mean, Nokia already has a ton of market share with no real profits to speak of, which is exactly what Android offers. You’d think they’d be a natural for Android. Then, they can stand right alongside Motorola ($80 million in profit last quarter), LG (lost money last quarter), Samsung (small profit last quarter) and add their own pitiful profit.

Meanwhile, Apple holds up a $4 billion bag of profit from last quarter alone, which buys a lot of bricks for the walled garden. Think about that: for every dollar in profit Android OEMs made last quarter, Apple made $4, despite the fact that Android devices matched the 33.5 million iOS devices sold (though admittedly many of those were Android variants in China).

      • Steve Hillshire

Android gave these companies a chance for rebirth after they had become irrelevant in the smart phone race. Not giving two squats about Apple’s huge profit, these *obviously* smaller companies have gone from irrelevant to relevant because of Android. And they produce phones that *collectively* are something Steve Jobs fears. It is overly apparent in all his intros now as he uses his massive marketing team to put a spin on everything to look in their favor. It is also apparent in how Apple is starting to feel the pressure to get new features out the door….and quickly.

  • serpentor

Why would they note that Nokia would pay a fee to MS for each copy used? That’s not different than how things are done now with WP7 OEMs.

Unless the fee was like a penny per copy. That would be special.

    • Anonymous

I think you’ve stumbled onto what is actually happening here: Nokia won’t have to pay the typical WP7 licensing fee.

      • Anonymous

why would any other manufacturer continue to pay microsoft a licensing fee when microsoft is subsidizing nokia to compete against them? i sure wouldn’t…

  • Antarsh

Lol Microsoft just wasted money for nothing, no one cares about WP7.

    • Everybody

Absolutely. WP7 is another windblows mobile FAIL. Period.

      • Anonymous

Actually, Android is the new Windows Mobile. Following in the exact mis-steps that MS apparently learned from.

  • dima

I can’t see Nokia surviving 5 years if they are forced to use WP7.

  • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

Smart move for MS. They knew many manufacturers might be leaning Android due to the ability to control parts of the software. By not only removing licensing rights but also paying a fee to Nokia, MS gains a huge beachhead into areas outside of the US.

Still, in the long run, Android will be on way more flavors of devices and has a huge lead to keep MS at bay. Plus, the history of Windows phones hurts its launch of WM7, basically, the previous ones sucked so bad in the user interface department it allowed a mad rush to iOS and the 2.x versions of Android.

  • http://twitter.com/TheSyberGroup TheSyberGroup

So what’s the issue. I am sure Google was going to pay a similar amount.

  • http://twitter.com/mbcls ask me

who cares! i havnt used a nokia for over 10 years!

  • LOLcat

Android is the best! I love beta testing software on a 600 dollar device! Oh, and i love that the rules change from app to app, because why should I be able to quit every program in the same fashion as the others? And all those context sensitive sub-menus, sooooo awesome. Don’t forget the awesome custom software my manufacturer loaded on to make the beta software run even better! I <3 half baked shit on a consumer device. *Note the sarcasm*

Anyone want to trade a WP7 phone on verizon for a fascinate, message me.

    • Steve Hillshire

Yeah, that’s why the comscore US smart phone report today showed no stopping Android as it now has surpassed BB and has totally left everything else in the dust. Where’s that article BGR????

      • Anonymous

As far as what? Buy one get one free, being on 100 phones. Ford sells more cars then Ferrari. Doesn’t mean there better.

      • Chut Pata

You are right. Just because Nokia sells more phones than Apple and Blackberry combined, does not mean it is any good. Cheap crap like Nokia and Ford would always be sold more than expensive stuff like iPhone/Blackberry and Ferrari.

    • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

      1. WP7 doesn’t exist on Verizon, yet, so you’d be kinda screwed with a trade right now…
      2. I love my Fascinate. Sure Sammy sucks balls in delivering Android releases when others did months back, but the phone works great and the apps are awesome. Also, all that was needed was a little root action and I got me some Android 2.2 and removal of Verizon bloat. Soon, I’ll have Android 2.3 as the devs are well underway. Meanwhile WP7 has no flash, copy/cut/paste, etc etc…

I think you’re just doing it wrong.

      • LOLcat

        1. As a consumer I expect my device to operate as advertised and the software to feel complete and run smoothly, especially on a high end device. (GPS still is god awful to the point the phone is falsely advertised as having GPS)
        2. What ROM are you using? I was under the impression all the legit ones were still stuck at 2.1 and is the main reason I haven’t rooted and put a custom ROM on. XDA confuses me.

I really can’t stand the flaming fan boys. Does android have stuff to like? Sure. Does that mean it is the best, no. Android is exactly like Linux (I wonder why…), in that it does a lot of stuff better than other OS’s. However, there are so many random bugs/glitches/inconsistencies/fragmentation issues that make it hard to recommend. (which is not to say I don’t recommend Ubuntu to tons of people with virus crippled PC’s that use them for the most basic of tasks.)

That 90% of android commenters can’t step back and judge android objectively really says a lot about them (this goes for iphone owners as well). I however, will not sit back and trick myself to thinking my OS/device is the best just because it is the one I own. Additionally, anyone that wants to deny that android is on top because it was the only competitor to the iphone needs to have their head checked. Until recently, my smartphone choices consisted of android, or…. Android.
Microsoft is the only company (and possibly HP and ROM makers) that is actively trying to advance the GUI of smartphones and I have a lot of respect for that. Instead of flaming MS sucks blah blah blah, why not hope that their advances force the other manufacturers to also advance.

and wp7 isn’t beta software? please

    • YoYo

Ah so this is what the consumer base for a Windows phone looks like, i guess it makes sense that one of such ignorance would crave such a device as the WP7.

  • Bob

Company value has droped about 15 billions since the anouncement. I feel Elop is in grade one. The only person that has profited from this announcement is Elop himself.

    • Bullyboyb

Shocked at how short sighted you are. In the long run Nokia shares will rise once investors start seeing the wp7 devices. My advice to you dear Sir, buy Nokia shares now when you can still afford them. In 2 years time sell and make a healthy profit.

The fall in shares maybe caused by institutional investors who pulled out of Nokia because they are naturally risk averse and are watching from a distance to see how the change in strategy by Nokia will pan out……

      Just my £0.02

  • Anonymous

At least Nokia won’t have to worry about install antivirus programs like Lookout on their non-Android phones.

  • Anonymous

    Nokia is ‘finnished’ [period]…
If Microsh¡t wants to go after foreign markets, it will serve them right. After all, they would probably do better in markets with less tech’ savvy consumers. However, ‘it’s over Johnny, over’.

  • luddite

I don’t know what this stuff is. Android? 5Gs?

Seems almost pointless running around strapped to a computer all day.

am just not even going to acknowledge all these ANDROID hater’s lol
we are number 1 GET THE FUCK OVER IT – please i know it’s hard to accept
such a infant O.S could leave WinMO,WP7,IOS,RIM,Symbian in the dust – Can’t wait
till were on Android Version 7 <3 —————————i am sure the android will be 80-95 % market share by then
and all the other O.S's would be watching from the hater gates – in Android heaven <3.

  • YoYo

Two reasons why i don’t get this move

1.Nokia is pretty much non existent in the US cell Market and hasn’t done anything relevant or present any amazing device in years to get its name out there.
2.Lets face the facts the average consumer wants a Droid or an Iphone they’re the most popular devices on the market and atleast imo they’re the best phones on the market (sorry Palm, WP7 and RIM). And when the average customer goes into a cell phone store looking for a phone most likely they’re gonna get directed to a Droid phone or the Iphone depending what carrier. I would think for Nokia the best move would have been to cater to Android and get its name out there.

    • Neoprimal

      1. Still one of the biggest in the world. The U.S != the world.
      2. Android DEPENDS on having a constant data connection. WP7 does not. It’s likely this will actually benefit MS and Nokia in the long run. MS because it will be on brand preferred devices in said countries, and benefit Nokia because they’ve offloaded some of the dependency of writing software and updates for these phones.

I’m not saying that specifically blocking Android on Nokia isn’t a stupid move by Nokia, because I would jump on an Android Nokia in a second, so would many I think….it’s GREAT, well thought out hardware; but in the business scheme of things, Nokia has gotten an infusion of cash and MS has gotten sudden exposure to parts of the globe only tiptoed on by some of the other brands/OS based phones.

  • Anonymous

I don’t even understand how Microsoft actually makes money. They are always so willing to spend/lose it. $1 billion just to bribe Nokia, $1 billion lost just on broken Xboxes, $500 million just to advertise Kinect, $50 million for timed exclusives like GTA expansions, yet they just recently had something like their best quarter in history. Must be good to have a bottomless pit of dead presidents.

    • Neoprimal

That’s easy. $20-120 per copy of Windows 7/Vista/XP etc. Hundreds of dollars per seat for Business Windows, not to mention upgrades every few years. $60-100+ for millions of Office suites sold, a tidy little profit on mice, keyboards, cameras, etc. Millions from licensing on their game system(s), Kinect IS profitable, so 1/2 billion is a drop in the bucket to what they made on selling them.

They have the monetary base to innovate till our heads spin but they’re just…not…doing…it.

    • Chut Pata

There is a marketing technique called dumping. Products are sold below the cost to rob customers from competitors. When the competition dies and monopoly is created, then the dumper can charge whatever it likes, because consumer has no choice. MS killed it biggest competitors back in 80′s e.g. DR-DOS, Word Perfect, dBase etc by dumping its products. Apple somehow survived due to Steve Job’s cult following.

Rest assured, MS will try its best to kill Android. Although Google is way too big for MS to take a heads on collision, it can go for containment like Romans did to Hannibal’s army (until Hannibal trapped them cia strategic withdrawl)

  • Anonymous

Smart move by nokia IMO. They wouldn’t want a cheap buggy slow malware choppy laggy half baked pared os on there phones anyway. To bad iOS wasn’t a available they would have jumped on that like a fly to poo.

    • Neoprimal

      Poo is right.
