Keith Pardy leaves the RIM party

Business

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Research In Motion’s chief marketing officer (CMO), Keith Pardy, will be leaving the company. Citing personal reasons, Pardy will transition out of the company over the next six months. RIM is in the midst of launching its new, highly anticipated BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and the timing is, to say the least, unfortunate. The WSJ notes that the CMO revealed his plans to the Waterloo-based company last month.

A sinking ship that continues to increase revenue and profits….odd

      • DaHarder

        ADIOS! Now where’s my PlayBook?

      • Iknow

        lol seriously these people

RIM is really gonna sink fast bringing in $1 Billion in profit every quarter without even introducing a new product.

McDonalds and Wal-Mart still show signs of growing the midst of a troubling economy. I don’t see either of those selling Top Notch products. And when every other “smart platform” offers everything Blackberry offers, it’s hard to stay with such an old platform.

Waiting for it… “which age come maturity” … true. and after Maturity come Mold and Mildew…. we know where RIM stands.

Increasing revenue because they are selling more in international markets where people have less money, so RIM is more accessible, kinda like a feature phone, and iPhones and Android devices are more or less a luxury. Sales in the US are a different matter, and much of it has come from Buy 1 Get 5 offers for enterprises, and teens whose parents still pay for cell service. Almost anyone who wants a Smartphone goes Android, iOS, even WebOS and Win7 before they go Blackberry. Even my used-to-be die hard blackberry friends have expressed interest in switching to either Android or iOS once RIM releases Blackberry Messenger to those platforms, as it currently is the only thing that keeps them there.

RIM needs QNX phones, fast, or else it will go the way of WebOS, i.e. prob bought by Dell in this case.

At least someone gets it. I can walk in Verizon and come out with 4 free blackberries. They are just giving them away and in low income countries it’s a great device to have because it’s cheap and people in those places can’t afford iPhones and high end Android devices. RIM’s profit comes from their business products and services. They are a joke in consumer electronics.

What’s your point? The rest of the world doesn’t count? If you haven’t noticed, the US economy has been in the dumps lately and the greenback has been taking a pounding. We hope the US economy bounces back but we haven’t seen a shred of evidence while the “rest” of the world like Asia Pacific and Latam regions (and even Europe to certain extent) continue to chug ahead. Oh, yeah, these are the regions where RIM happens to sell tens of millions of handset, including plenty of Torch, 9780, 9700 and soon PB, Dakota and other newer higher-end devices.

BTW, isn’t it curious that Apple is actually contemplating producing a cheaper iPhone model. I wonder why that is? Obviously, even some folks at Apple see the importance of looking at the less fortunate regions where people can’t afford luxury devices like iPhone 4 and Galaxy S. Also, if you have gone to the Asia Pac region lately, you will see plenty of sub-$200 Android devices (off contract). Samsung and LG may produce state of the art luxury Android handsets, but they also product cheap Android sets as well. I’m sure they wouldn’t dream of scoffing at the sales generated by these less fortunately regions.

The US market is big but it isn’t what it use to be. I can see why RIM will do what it can to maintain its share in the US market but I completely understand why RIM is also betting heavy in other regions where, at the moment, iPhone is less dominant.

      • Scorp

Yes because of their business products and services. Not the devices that they are practically handing out for free. They make money for their services not handsets. So in the world of SMARTPHONES….. sinking ship. In business services? No.

Don’t know where your info from but in the Caribbean blacks berries cost more than in the US and Canada. First of all a 100% of consumer goods are imported, shipping is high and duties here where I live is extortion. So the so call cheap Blackberry phones does not exist in 3rd world countries. In Barbados a Curve cost $400 US 9700 goes for $600 US and the Torch is $700 US. These are carrier prices. Prices goes up with other retailers. Yes people here buy them over Iphones for 2 reasons. There is no 3G yet so no one can enjoy all the Iphone functions on the go. Secondly, monthly data plans and using BBM is far cheaper than texting. Get facts straight, there is nothing cheap in 3rd world countries unless you are a tourist coming with US dollars.

85% of RIM’s revenue came from handset sales last quarter which has been pretty consistent in prior quarters as well. This information is publically available on the company’s website. The fact that carriers sell 2 for 1doesnt affect RIM. RIM sells devices to distributors who then sell to carriers and finally the carrier sells to the market. Carrier revenu is recouped in monthly fees. Carriers will also push BB as ots cheaper for them to support (more efficient data compression, less bandwidth required). Is there anymore information you would like to fabricate for us?

there is this company who has tied apple in earnings and growth for the last 10 years, it was called Research In Motion also known as RIM. A company who has a greater market share in the world than Apple who like someone says has made billions and will still make billions with out bringing the hottest products out. But yet u think they are a sinking ship. Comments like that really show how smart people are these days.

      • Scorp

Yeah Apple has been making smartphones for how long? 4 years. How long has RIM been doing it? I wonder how many devices would carriers be able to move if they cost 200 bucks? Much easier to move them when people are looking for a device to get email and get it for free.

        Blackberry is a 2011 2 way pager.

      • Steve

4 years ago a hell of a lot more people on the planet knew who Apple were, yet had never heard of RIM or BlackBerry. Your point is moot.

      • Scorp

Yeah but Apple wasn’t selling mobile device then. So comparing 10 years or more of a company selling devices vs 4 years is pretty pathetic.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BIX4YCMG6L5VM4XCXVPDCFZZFY Samuel Oguntayo

Some new blood might be good. Though I use bb none of their commercials have ever made me want one. Kinda lame.

  • Chut Pata

Good riddance. RIM should hire someone from Apple. They know how to market iCrap.

    • JohhnyBoy

hahahahahaha so true. terrible products, but great ads…the ONLY reason apple are where they are. Nobody cares about their products. Look at the ZUNE vs ipod….ZUNE was BY FAR the better product, but poor advertising sunk that ship cause it just wasn’t ‘cool’….sad that the general public is swayed by ads and not the actual product.

      • Scorp

Yeah Zune only failed because it was poor marketing. Zune sucked hard. Apple makes terrible products? Hmmmmm. If we go by what the BB fanboy said above then RIM must be in good position with all their profits and have good products. So if Apple is making hand of fist in profits how come their products are terrible? Can you say hypocrite?

Boy (whoooooh), he must have gotten a really bad R.I.M. job.

“Personal reasons” = I was not prepared to do my job anymore once iPhone came to market.

  • Anonymous

The “personal reasons” are RIM’s dinosaur products.

it wouldnt suprise me that this actually happend the other way around…..

“the CMO revealed his plans to the Waterloo-based company last month”

the Waterloo-based company revealed there plans for him last month….

  • Scorp

I wonder if this is the guy that helped create BBM flirt

  • Anonymous

this is good news, time to move on. better stuff.

India hates RIM. And so does Keith Pardy. He must own or desires either Android or iOS. And he most certainly hated the battery pulls and hour glass.

  • http://infinus.myopenid.com/ infinus

    good for apple fans….
it’s has been news that apple is hiring lot of RIM peeps…
they wan’t to get in corporate game….

one more blow (because of )jobs to RIM…

    • zukidrvr

One guy leaves due to personal problems. And yet the company continues to buy whole companies. TAT, QNX, Torch Mobile, DataViz, etc. They are opening more offices around the world and hiring like crazy. Doesn’t sound like failure to me.

Of course, if they introduced a folding urethane screen cover in cute colors, the world would swoon. Engineering and design genius! Magical!

  • uCosm

What BGR leaves out is that he will be staying on with RIM for the next 6 months to assist with the transition. He’s not “jumping” ship.

  • Reston

This ‘Scorp’ person is a complete moron. Don’t even acknowledge what comments are made by ‘it. RIM is no sinking ship. They are innovative, highly profitable and popular globally. Apple and Android fanboys love distortin the truth. I pwn people on iPhones and Androids ALL THE TIME with my Torch.

  • http://twitter.com/clientsfromhell Mr Multimedia

    RIM Marketing ingredients;

    1) Black Eyed Peas music in video
    2) Random dancers
    3) Adobe After Effects

    = Blackberry OS6 Teaser
    OS6 = OS5 with a new theme

So he was the guy responsible, ok.

  • urit

Overrated exec who never delivers. He also left Nokia for “personal reasons” funnily enough.
