Twitter for iPhone, iPad gets major update

mobile

Twitter just pushed out a major update for its iOS application, which is a universal app compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Twitter 3.3 adds a variety of functionality, the most obvious and painful of which is the new “Quick Bar” that dangles ads and Bieber-ish Twitter trends atop the main timeline. It’s very unique and remarkably annoying. Twitter lists other changes as follows:

  • Photos. Uploading photos is now easier than ever. There’s a camera button in the toolbar and we improved the image preview, so you can quickly choose a photo from your library or take a new picture.
  • Follow your friends. Now you can find which of your friends are on Twitter that have chosen to be discoverable through the contacts on your phone.
  • Local trends. See trends based on your location.
  • Shorten links. When you want to share a link on Twitter, just paste it into the Tweet box and we’ll automatically shorten it.
  • Tweet box design. We redesigned the “New Tweet” screen so it’s now cleaner and simpler.
  • Autocomplete. When tweeting on-the-go, speed and accuracy are important. Autocomplete for @usernames and hashtags help you tweet faster
  • Direct Messages. The new Direct Message conversation view helps you better keep track of messages.

Twitter 3.3 for iOS is available immediately and the app is still free. Head on over to the App Store to update and then have fun polling your friends in search of a less annoying third-party alternative. We like Tweetings, TweetList and Echofon.

Why is there no delete tweet or delete DM’s feature?

Also, why is the Twitter for iPad icon different from the one that is in the market when downloaded?

  • joshie

I knew about this, ’cause everyone on Twitter is b*tching about it!

There’s only 1 feature that I really want: the ability to automatically open links in my browser. I don’t want to use the in-app browser.

I hate to admit this, but “twitter” to me is like setting our old VCR clock was to my dad – he just never ‘got it.’ I cant make heads or tails of twitter or tweets.

This new banner bullshit has got to go. I don’t care what’s trending. If I did, I would go to the twitter website.

Delete….. That trending banner has got to go.
As you say its “still free” I wouldn’t consider paying for this app now.

For the iPad, the Tweet box design is still like the old one: you don’t have the entire tweet showing, you still have to scroll. This seems completely inexplicable what with the extra large typeface. The textbox should be completely visible without needing to scroll at all.

And yes, the trending bar is an annoyance.

And if you are jailbroken, you’ll probably want to download “Twizzler” from Cydia to remove that hideous trending topic bar.

Don’t upgrade if you can help it. It adds an annoying “quick Bar” at the top of the screen which is un-removeable and flickers every second or so with what’s “trending” (as if anyone really gives a rats behind about that). Some of these trends (a lot) are “promoted” so what it amounts to is an un-removeable bar of advertisement links at the top of your screen. Awful.
