Verizon offering $100 off all DROID smartphones via online store

It looks like Big Red is doing a little wheeling and dealing with its entire DROID smartphone lineup. Via the company’s web store, Verizon Wireless is offering online-purchasers of any DROID-branded smartphone an additional $100 off the subsidized, two-year contract price. With the new, temporary pricing schema in place, the DROID X (CPO), DROID R2D2, and DROID Incredible (CPO) will retail for the always enjoyable sum of $0. If those three handsets aren’t to your liking, the DROID 2 Global can be acquired for $99.99, the DROID PRO will set you back $79.99, and the DROID X (non-CPO) will retail for $49.99. Of course, the DROID BIONIC (not to mention the HTC ThunderBolt) is right around the corner. But if you don’t have that burning desire for the absolute latest and greatest, why not save yourself some cash?

    I find it funny as once being a verizon sales rep that the online site offers deals like these and we are told to “sell the value”….value of what? spending an extra hundred dollars??!! i think not..verizon rewards shady sales people…dont forget what you buy at verizon is getting someone paid!

      I also keep in mind somebody gets paid when I pay for a new car, washer, dryer, tv, or really any type of product that is sold. Commission is a bulk of those “shady sales peoples” check and sure some are shady, but most actually do sell what’s best as they want you to come see them, not another sales clerk, for any accessory or future phones you need. Value is buying from a store being shown how to use the phone and getting stuff transferred such as contacts if you don’t have back up assistant. Of course a floor person is going to sale value, they don’t get paid by the warehouse when that person wanted to save an extra $100 but than wants that store to spend an hour showing how to work the phone.

      It’s not shadiness. It’s just being smart. Before the iphone was on Verizon I would make all kinds of outlandish claims about how DROID is better in every way. It was so easy to sell those things when they couldn’t actually try the iPhone. Now it’s not so easy as people prefer quality app, no lag and timely OS updates instead of free and opennness.

        DROID’s = Shit. That’s why they’re free. That’s also why it looks like Android is selling. It’s not, it’s just given away on free, cheap, crappy phones. That way poor people can say “I have a Smartphone too”.

        It blows the iPhone out of the water. Same camera as the iphone, faster, stronger, more flexible.

        You hold up an HTC Evo running the Solar Wind live wallpaper with widgets running live updates, and then throw in some apps that are identical to what the iPhone has, and people opt for the Evo, and that’s a fact.

        Unless you’re a girl and have small hands, or a guy who likes what girls like.

        Sorry Nefan but you’re a complete moron. That’s not why they’re free, it’s a 1 day promotion that isn’t on the official site. Android sells because if you like the Android software, you have choices in terms of form factor and manufaturer, instead of being stuck with one form factor and one manufacturer. You should think about committing suicide, Nefan65.

      I always went to VZ corporate store. NOT ANY more Their attitudes there STINK. Online is soooo much easier to deal with. I went to my local store, left came back next day dealt with someone else , same thing . Just plain terrible attitude, like they are doing me favors. trying to make us feel like fools because we do not want all those accessories he walked out with, like it was not enough that i was buying 3 HTC increds. Then I am so lame because I did not want insurance. Later, I will only do online now, very easy process

      They are not new phones dummy, they are the obsolete ones (single core) on clearance sale because they will be replaced with newere ones (dual core) e.g. Incredible is soon to be replaced with Incredible 2.

      Sadly, such incentives are the ultimate proof that Droid demand has cratered post-iPhone. Or perhaps the Fandroids would like to desperately argue that this price drop is proof of strong Droid demand. The Droid X is a solid device, but $0 on contract? Motorola’s “units sold” number will be hideous this quarter. This was destined to happen once consumers no longer had to settle for pitiful iPhone wannabes.

        All new phones up and coming are replacements for these phones; they kick the iPhone’s butt around the block.

        I find it amazing that human beings have the tendency to block out what goes against their own world view/assumptions/choices, and let in what conforms to their beliefs.

        There are many signs that the iphone as it is with the same old O/S since 2007 with little tweaks here and there is becoming susceptible to fatigue; take for example the slapping of the same O/S onto a bigger screen, while Google revamped Android into a whole new O/S for a larger screen.

No they are moving stock for the next gen….. I like iPhone but prefer my Droid for my personal reasons but they are all good devices in their own way..

    Those prices are for new lines only. Hit my New Every Two mark on 2/11, I’ve got every intention of using this last gasp of NET to get a slammin’ phone, and the HTC Incredible (CPO) is still 19.99 today. I’m not averse to paying so little for a phone as awesome as the Incredible, but I’ve been a Verizon customer for almost five years now – that’s got to mean something to Big Red. Plus I’m cheap and trying to buy a house – every little bit helps, you know?

    There is a reason why Android phone market share has such impressive growth. That reason is they are consistently cheaper than the iPhone. Same will need to happen with Android tablets if they expect the same.

      That is not in the hand of Google. The hardware manufacturers have to decide e.g. Motorola decided to make a much more powerful tablet than iPad i.e. Xoom, and ended up being pricier than iPad. The same way HTC Thunderbold, Motorola Bionic, Samsung Galaxy 2, and all other dual core phones are going to be more expensive than iPhone.

        If the Androids are not a hell of a lot cheaper than Apple regardless of specs, people will normally buy Apple.

        Exactly! That’s why Android has taken off. The majority of the units are discounted phones. Better than 95% of the people who own them use them for face value. It’s the minority that root them, and mod them.

        Not necessarily. The iPhone sales for Verizon were below expectations. Among many reasons, one solid reason was that Verizon customers had tasted Android, and a lot many were not willing to jump the bandwagon of iPhone hype.

        Already a lot many people are saying, “Heck, I will pay $50 more than iPad for Xoom, and get a dual core power machine”.

      These phones sell for $199.99 with a new 2 year contract, but newer phones are coming out.

      The iPhone 3GS is being given away free as well; there’s NO DIFFERENCE except for the fact that Android offers way more options and that’s what you’re seeing reflected here.

      I *wish* Android based phones were consistently cheaper, because my wallet would be alot fatter.

      Aside from that, deriding slightly less expensive phones is going against what Jobs/Apple has in mind next to combat the Android onslaught.

      The only difference THERE is that you can sit a $100 Android phone next to a $100 iO/S phone, and I can promise that ther will *still* be waaaay more options for Android that will be more appealing to people working with that budget. I mean, really people…if the iPhone’s once iconic (no pun intended) look of stacked icons fails next to a souped up HTC Evo in ability and appearance, imagine what their cheaper version will be perceived as next to an Android equivalent.

    But I just got off the phone with “verizon ‘executive-relations’” and they claim Y.O.U. only have half the story:

    the link you provide goes to an actual verizon wireless site and “THEIR” picture is different!
    I just purchased an R2D2 last week and they are claiming the only way to get it for “FREE” is if I sign for the ‘TOTAL PACKAGE/UNLIMITED EVERYTHING”, but I will monitor them for the next week and price-match them OR return their phone and pay the restocking fee…

      I have phone numbers for verizon executive relations people, as well as verizon wireless’ actual attorney’s and some of their marketing people. I will contact them and argue my purchase.
      Seems the only way Verizon takes you seriously is if you threaten them with a lawsuit.

    this promotion will run at least one week.
    Which means that there will be no release of ThunderBolt¡₣ tomorrow (or, even this Friday). This could very well delay ThunderBolt¡₣ release one, if not two, more weeks.
