Apple’s iPad 2 might be ‘magical’ but it still should’ve been better

Opinions

Apple’s latest media-rattling event has come and gone, and we’re now left to sort through all that magic and focus on the product itself. We also need to process any tidbits we might have missed amid the fracas. The star of the show was Apple’s new iPad 2, of course, and initial reactions are obviously overwhelmingly positive. In the end, we’re looking at a thin, sleek, sexy new tablet that will obviously sell like hotcakes. But is Apple’s new iPad 2 really the iPad it should have been? Hit the break for several key areas where Apple’s new iPad falls short.

New year, same screen

The display on the new iPad 2 is, unfortunately, the exact same resolution as last year’s model. We know users are going to need a reason to buy the third-generation iPad when it launches next year — or even later this year, if rumors pan out — but technology moves fast enough that a bump in display quality would have made the new iPad 2 infinitely more appealing and still left plenty of room for improvement with the iPad 3. Looking at the iPad display next to the iPhone 4′s Retina Display is, plainly put, sad. But unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for the third-generation model to see a significant bump in screen resolution.

What’s so mega about those pixels?

With all that space on the supersized iPad body, I would definitely have liked to see an amazing new rear camera on the iPad 2. Snapping pictures and recording videos with the 9.5-inch-tall iPad 2 is going to be ridiculously awkward at best, and Apple could have at least done users the service of making the resulting images and videos stunning. In the same vein, video calls made via FaceTime could have yielded a much better experience if the front-facing camera raised the bar rather than sneaking beneath it with VGA resolution. I expected more.

It needs more G’s

It’s 2011. Sprint has a live WiMAX network, Verizon Wireless has a live LTE network, and AT&T will begin rolling out its LTE network soon enough. 4G is so important, apparently, that AT&T and T-Mobile found it necessary to rebrand their 3G networks as 4G. Yet the new iPad is only compatible with 3G cellular networks. Apple should be ahead of the curve here, or at least on the curve. Instead, the new iPad 2 is behind the curve. Snoop knows what I’m talking about.

It’s still just a toy

Apple’s iPad, and consumer tablets in general, are still just toys. Fun toys, of course, but toys nevertheless. Simply put, they can’t replace any consumer electronics device that was on the market before Apple kicked off the tablet craze last year. They can perform plenty of tasks quite well, but not better than the other device they might hope to replace. When it comes to watching movies, a TV is best. When it comes to working, a laptop is best. When it comes to browsing or sending emails on the go, a smartphone is best. And so on. I would like to have seen Apple introduce some compelling new use cases for the iPad — some innovative new functionality that makes the iPad “the best” at something. As it stands, Apple’s second-generation tablet is still only best at being a sexy, expensive, ultimately expendable toy.

It’s the best for reading in bed.

No it isn’t. A 4G Touch is a lot lighter to hold for long periods of time when reading in bed.

I will be more impressed with a tablet that doesn’t have as part of it’s specs that it requires……… a computer, iTues and an iTunes account, before you can use it

The most accurate statement that I have heard from any tech. site in a while!

Where is the external storage slot (SD Card or otherwise)??? How did this not make your list?

I was dissapointed by this item. The funny thing is the amount of people that say how “amazing” the ipad 2 is.

BlackBerry Playbook kills this thing in about every category except apps.

How could Apple release something that was obsolete?!

This review of iPAD2 is what iPAD should have been is ridiculous. This is like suggesting the weather should be different than it is. iPAD was not designed to replace your laptop… Apple did introduce “The Air” which is a significant release and it will replace the white Macbook for $999. And it does so with instant on, etc. with convenient USB 2.0 ports that you so want these days.

Your camera critique is notable, but Apple only intended it for Video Conferencing. There is room for improvement, but cost is a big issue. It was not intended to replace you Canon products, etc.

The updated GPU and memory performance is spectacular and if you knew anything about display technology you would know that a Retina display of this size would rob the power and performance and a 10 hour usable product is a key issue. Nor was this intented to replace the hi-performance gaming PC’s etc.

Software improvements are a key issue, but you and so many other fanbois are stuck on hardware specs.
Enough. This won’t change you and your reporting … just says that I don’t value your contributions… goodbye.

I’m so sick of posts complaining about the tech Apple chooses to implement in their devices. They have obviously done the research and they have the track record to prove that it will work and be a big hit with millions of people. Apple would give us the world if it could do it at their current price point. You don’t think they want to be light years ahead of the competition? Of course they do! However, to do that, they would have to sacrifice the price point, which would limit their market penetration. If market penetration is affected, so are profits, and as a business, they can’t do that. So, they wait for technology to mature and prices to come down before they implement. In a few years, we’ll probably be rocking retina displays in our 17″ Macbook Pro and our iMac, but for now, the cost of implementing that kind of pixel density on a larger scale than the iPhone 4′s 3.5 inch screen just isn’t feasible.

So get over your spec wish list. Most people don’t care. They want a product that is high quality, functions as advertised, and “just works.” The magical experience is what is driving Apple’s sales, not comparing penis size.

I don’t know how you can really say it’s just a toy! I use it as a serious tool – it has actually changed the way I do things; allowing me to do serious computing without the need to sit at a desk or balance a cumbersome laptop on my legs. I can even VNC my iMac from it.

The iPad 2 carries on the usual computer tradition. I’ve had enough new computers in my time to know that when you get a new, faster one sometimes you only notice a marginal increase in speed. However, after getting used to it – try going back to your old one that you used to be pretty happy with – it’s only then that you realise the benefits!

A little harsh. But not that far off the mark.

Um they are all toys. Real men use pen and paper.

In your opinion, the iPad 2 has a *SAD* looking screen?

Neither of our iPad1 or 2 have “sad” looking display qualities.

i can’t believe the amount of butthurt in here. truth must hurt. then again, apple fanboys bruise incredibly easy. just one negative about their precious fruit company’s products can feel like a knife through their fanboy hearts. lol.

    What a bollocks article!

The screen on the ipad2 is the same stunning screen that was on the first iPad for a reason, its a great screen. If you don’t like it go to a store and compare the screen of the iPad to the screen on a xoom or the Galaxy Tab side by side, the difference slaps you in the face its such a nicer richer screen on the iPad.

I think Apple just spoilt everyone with the retina display on the iPhone 4, now everyone expects it.

I dont have an iPad being a graphic designer, but I have a few friends that do use it as their primary computer, it’s defiantly not a toy to them, and I can see why they love them.

Thank goodness that this is categorized as an opinion and not real journalism. Clearly, the author has not been privy to seeing how this device is being used as a productivity tool in a variety of organizations and industries. While the new features are a bit lackluster compared to expectation, based on emerging technologies, it is most definitely not a mere toy…
