Apple unveils the new iPad 2

Breaking

Apple has just gone and done it, boys and girls — the next generation iPad is now official. Moments ago, Steve Jobs just announced the new iPad, the iPad 2 — surprise, it’s pretty much what we were suspecting. Here are some key specifications right from the man himself:

  • Apple A5 processor, dual core CPU
  • 2x CPU speed, 9x graphics speed improvement
  • Front and rear cameras
  • Gryoscope
  • 33% thinner, 13.4mm to 8.8mm thin — thinner than an iPhone 4, and lighter than the previous iPad
  • AT&T and Verizon models, white and black iPads
  • Same original iPad battery life, over 10 hours of usage and a month of standby time

Pricing for the new iPad lines up exactly with the original model: iPad Wi-Fi will be available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacitties for $499, $599, and $699 respectively. The iPad Wi-Fi + 3G will be available in the aforementioned sizes for $629, $729, and $829. The new model will go on sale in just under two weeks starting in the U.S. with many more countries joining in on March 25th.

what happened to the speaker? what about the cameras Steve was going to mention “a bit later”? what about RAM? a few things left completely out of the presentation.

“surprise, it’s pretty much what we were suspecting”

If you remove the expectations of NFC, RAM bump, lower price, Retina display, elimination of the home button, iOS 5 with a working notification system, etc.

I would pay 400 for this technology or it’s equivalent with the Android OS. No more. This new “tablet” style hasn’t convinced me of it’s usefulness beyond novelty…yet.

I tried an Android Tablet first and was severly dissappointed. Then I went out and bought a $500 iPad and I have never been happier with any device! With the 60000 iPad apps out there, the iPad has overwhelmed the competition. The OS that the iPad runs is smoother than any Android Device I have ever used. The OS refreshes at 60 frames per second versus Android which can only manage between 4-20 frames per second!

    wow it’s magical.

    $130 dollars more for a 3G chip?… you gotta be kidding me…

    • numetheus

This is exactly the same pricing as the 1st generation one. I don’t know why this is new to you.

      • Anonymous

That may be true, but I still think it is a joke.

This thing is really nothing special. They’re just gonna get all their iFanboys to spend another $600 because they know they can. Can’t wait for my Playbook

surely you jest, dear sir! or in the words of jim mora – “playbook? playbook? playbook?”

    • iRK

I’m guessing you’ve never owned an iPad? And you’re saying they are nothing special? You’ve never owned any tablet computer, yet you say the iPad is nothing special and you “can’t wait” for RIM’s Playbook? I’d like to know your reasoning, because you sound like an idiot.

I don’t get the consumer. Tablets are a glorified netbook and yet o are willing to spend $500 on one. It amazes me how gullible most are when it comes to marketing. But hey people bought the pet rock. All I know is you will never catch me dropping money on one.

    • numetheus

Every $500 netbook I have seen is sluggish and does not last 10 hours of constant use. My iPad lasts all day without a charge and is instant on, instant to run applications, and instant to pull up data. A netbook also can’t be used as conveniently. If I am walking around in the office with a netbook, I would have to stop, find a place to rest the netbook, open it up, load my app, load my file. With an iPad you can instantly push a button, tap a couple of times, and show someone data without stopping and without waiting for ANYTHING to load. And I can do this all day. A netbook can’t be used like that. Tablets are an extra convenience factor for the consumer … there is absolutely no way you can tell me a netbook is just as convenient. My next tablet though, will be a Honeycomb variety.

      • Brainiac

By no means am I saying netbooks are convenient. Netbooks are another scam for the consumer. If people want to pay $500 for a netbook or tablet just have convenience, then that’s their business. No netbook or tablet is worth what manufacturers charge just for mobility. I used that example to show 2 crappy, scam techs that consumers over pay for. I don’t own a netbook and will not buy a tablet. They are not worth the money just to be mobile or load apps. Its a waste of money in my opinion. but hey to each their own.

      • Brainiac

And those makers are laughing all the way to the bank.

      • numetheus

You are absolutely right. If you don’t feel you need the mobility, then these things ate pointless to you. For me, it’s a necessity. Not a necessity to where I can’t live without it, a necessity like broadband Internet is a necessity. I don’t need high speed for browsing. Actually, 56k modems were fast enough until I got broadband, then all of a sudden you can’t go back to it. I’ve used a tablet for work frequenty ever since it was released. I can’t go without it now because I can access stuff more easily and much faster than every other laptop toting architect where I work. Now that I’m used to it, having to carry around my work issued Lenovo just feels cumbersome, wieldy, and inefficient. That’s just me though. Personally I think the mobility is worth It and so do lots of companies.

Amazing that they can charge $100 for 16GB or RAM, when the price difference between a 16GB and 32 GB SD card is $20, but I guess the price is still good comparitively.

    Fail!!!

  • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

So. Xoom is $70 more than the comparable iPad2, but the Xoom has many additional features. Yet, on day one tons of people screamed foul at Xoom’s price, yet not one person saying anything here.

Face it, the prices are indicative of the hardware. Neither is overpriced based on the technology packed in.

Additionally, if you uy a 23GB SD card for the Xoom making it total 64GB, you’re about equal in price. :)

    • DingDingDing!

You really expect the Apple Fanboys to objectively compare anything to an Apple product? Whatever Steve says, they buy!

Dual core what?? 1G, 1.2G? hopefully not something like 800Mhz! Most tabs are coming with 1GB DDR, if this only has 512MB, that sucks. No true HDMI connector, I’m sorry but I’m not paying $89 for a freakin adapter when it comes standard on other tablets like the Playbook or Xoom where you just need micro HDMI cable .. either way, a little underwhelming for a device that’s supposed to last into 2012, I’ll pass for something else.

It looks nice the new one, better then the old one.
I am still impressed with their strategy though, it has worked for years and years.

Launch limited product, have gen 2 and 3 in a draw ready to release in 1 and 2 years.
Like all products they launch, they need to be atleast “3rd gen” to be of any real importance or use.

    • PeaceLove&Harmony

Why all the hate did the Ford Mustang 2010 have 700 hp more then the 2009 model? Does the new model have to fly or have a jet pack for it to be a worthwhile purchase? No company expects you to get a new model every year they just improve the model so that a NEW customer buys one this year. Buy what type you like, if its Android or iPad or BlackBerry, and hope that you get 2-3 years out of it before you leave it on the couch and sit on it accidently of course.

Yawn…welcome to the ipad v1.5 (not 2nd gen)

Why does apple always use a white girl and a black guy using facetime?

  • Anonymous

What black girls and white guys can’t facetime? That’s racist.
