Apple announces the dual-core 1GHz A5 processor

Breaking

Apple on Wednesday unveiled its new 1GHz A5 processor. It improves upon the A4, which can be found in Apple’s iPhone 4 and first-generation iPad. The A5 features a dual-core architecture that delivers CPU performance up to two times faster than the A4 and graphics performance up to nine times faster. The new A5 features the same low power consumption characteristics that helped make the A4 great, and it will be the first dual-core processor to ship in a tablet volume.

“it will be the first dual-core processor to ship in a tablet volume.” Maybe you forgot about the Tegra that ships on the Xoom?

    • D.Ray

Did I miss something or is the Xoom shipping in any volume?

    • JT

Maybe the author didn’t mean it as I read it.
Author: What’s a “Tablet Volume?” So this has a volume knob with a dual core processor?

        Haha!!!

  • SupeChunk

Yeah, I’m with Ben on that one. Did the Xoom just vanish from store shelves? Pretty sure it has dual core processors.

    • booboolala2000

It has vanished from most shelves. Sold out at many BB and VZW stores.

  • Jay

I wonder if we’ll see the A5 in the next iPhone.

  • RealTalk

LMAO!!! I surely gettting a Playbook now! How a device as powerful as the iPad2 can allow a user to make music, edit movies, facetime yet NO FLASH websites?! There is no excuse. You can complanit about Flash being a outdated energy hog with such a powerful machine. Apple Fail!

  • Terry

It’s funny the TouchPad will still have a faster processor than the iPad2

    Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-CPU APQ8060 1.2GHz <– TouchPad

So… like Tegra 2? Which is already shipping in the Xoom. And the Atrix. Hmm… It’s ok Apple. Just because I have just as much power in my Atrix as your tablet, doesn’t mean anything, right? Isn’t it just specs? haha

  • Adam

Right, because the Tegra2 obviously doesn’t exist, guys… *swoons* Oh Apple is so amazing, everything they do must be a first!

(sorry to be super mean, I’m just tired of everyone thinking Apple is the greatest thing since sliced bread)

  • RAM

Can’t find any info on the RAM for this. . . must not be that high or we would have heard lots about it = PC/console games still going Android/Tegra 2 due to 1G ram?!?!

“The first dual-core processor to ship in a tablet volume”? What about the xoom?

      boutique.

      My thoughts exactly!!!

We don’t know about Xoom sales volume yet. Based on where it is located in my local Best Buy I would be surprised if they sold any at all. The only way you would even know it existed would be from these websites. It was hidden in amongst PC accessories!

      • ScottAtlanta82

        That’s a shame. It’s a kick-ass device.

      • Mohammedm

BB has a ass backwards policy of putting 10 inch tablets with computers and 7 inch and lower in the mobile section. Since the iPad is usually with other apple products right in front of the computers section everyone sees it first. Also many stores organize by size so the Xoom’s size puts it with netbooks, who’s gonna go to the bargin bin to look for a high end MOBILE device?

      • Drew

Still not a reason to blatantly lie with such claims and stretch the truth on a technicality… Technically you (Apple) weren’t the first tablet to ship with dual-core PERIOD. Blind sheep will read it was the first dual-core tablet….

    • greenongreen

      …or my viewsonic gtablet about a year ago (w a tegra 2)?

  • Thatguy0109

The Xoom is already on the market! How is this the first dual core processor to ship?

    • Anonymous

They said to ship in volume …. Xoom probably shipped about 100 thousand units while the ipad 2 will ship over a million units

    • dwinsmith

Since the iPad will ship in higher quantities to more markets it will be the first to ship in volume. Not shipping period, but in volume.

  • Anonymous

SJ said the first dual core to chip in VOLUME. The xoom my had shipped a few hundred thousand at best. ipad 2 will sell in the millions. Millions= volumes.

    • Anonymous

Hundred thousand qualifies as volume. The iPad 2 will just sell a higher volume. Steve Jobs just wanted to make his product seem even more appealing by saying that

Do you think this processor will appear in the next iPhone?

    • Kees

Count on it being in the next iPhone… and on another note, if you are going to post, Please Use Correct English.

We’ll see the A5 processor in the iPhone 5.

Announcing dual 1GHz speed while the Tegra 2 was announced at up to 1.5GHz seems eerily reminiscent of the PowerPC/Intel situation. Moto and IBM just didn’t seem able to scale the PPC clock speed like Intel could on their x486 chips.
