Verizon Wireless will move to tiered data plans this summer

Breaking

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference this afternoon, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo told investors that Verizon Wireless plans to move to tiered data plans in the near future. The plans, which could roll out as early as this summer, may be based on consumption, speed, or a combination of the two. “We are still working on the models,” said Mr. Shammo. The CFO mentioned that Verizon Wireless consciously decided against a tiered data option with the recently launched iPhone 4, noting that the company did not want to dissuade any potential buyers. When asked about the unlimited $30 data plan currently being offered for smartphones, Mr. Shammo quipped, “Everyone knows that isn’t long-term. We will move to tiered pricing in the mid-summer time frame.” What do you think Big Red customers? Sound off in the comments.

I was just in a Verizon store today, they said all of the talk of tiered plans is just rumors as of now. They said that when you go to upgrade your device you are “subject to the new promotions and plans at that time”. And when I asked about being “grandfathered” she said it would not matter, I would still be subject to the tiered plans. ***This could be what she was told to say to anyone who asks. I just dont see how they can change your plan when your not changing your plan at all, your just upgrading a device. Every report I hear is that NEW customers would be subjects to the tiered plans, well those of us upgrading are not NEW customers.

I am curious to see what VZW’s data plans will actually be. Right now, I have three BB’s on my account all on the $15/150 MB plan. My wife barely uses any data, my daughter uses about 75, and I use about 25-30 each month (I’d probably use more but my phone connects to WiFi at home and the office, where I am most of the time). So the $15 plan for suits me fine. I don’t stream radio, don’t spend hours surfing the web, usually just quick check’s in, etc.

I constantly check my data usage to make sure I don’t need to adjust it, but I am thinking if a good tiered plan comes out, I will adjust up, on mine and my daughters, and keep my wife’s as low as possible.

I think tiered pricing makes good business as well as consumer sense. Depending on the pricing, it’s a win/win for both VZW and the customers.

I’m not happy about it either. However, if your cable company can charge you for different speeds why not cell phone company’s?

As a couple we were both convinced to buy an unlimited plan in January this year. We didn’t think we would need it. A 150 meg data plan was available which we thought would work for each of us. After several months use, we were right. The salesperson told us we could switch if we didn’t need unlimited. When we called to switch, they said 150 megs wasn’t available any more. We were stuck. Hopefully the tiered plan will have something for us occasional users.

They force a limited plan and I‘ll go back to my old “dumb” phone and pocket the savings.

That’s so lame. I hate this kind of move. All these people care about is lining their gold lined pockets. They couldn’t give two craps about their customers. I will be switching as soon as my contract is up, that’s for sure.

they should have never done away with the 15>00 150 MB plan. It was teh main reason we considered changing to the iphone and when we went in today we were forced to pay 30 for the unlimited data. They neeed to hurry up and get tiered service levels back!!!!!!!
