Sidekick users beware: Danger Services to shutter on May 31st

Services

In a statement released at 12:00AM ET this morning, T-Mobile announced that Microsoft’s Danger Services — the service that powers T-Mobile’s Sidekick — will be shutdown on May 31, 2011. The announcement was brief, and noted that T-Mo will be providing offers to Sidekick customers, incentivizing them to transition to a new device before the end of May. A web tool has been created that will allow users to export their personal data from the Danger service — including contacts, photos, calendar, notes, to-do lists, and bookmarks — for importation onto a new device. The full statement from T-Mobile is waiting for you after the break.

After May 31, 2011, the Danger Service (a subsidiary of Microsoft) used by T-Mobile Sidekick customers for data services will no longer be available on Sidekick devices.

T-Mobile will provide offers for our Sidekick customers before May 31, 2011, to help make an easy transition from their existing Sidekick device to a new device. We will have more information to share about these offers with our customers in the weeks ahead.

To ensure the best possible transition for our loyal Sidekick customers, an enhanced Web tool is available on myT-Mobile.com to easily export their personal data, including contacts, photos, calendar, notes, to-do lists, and bookmarks, from the Danger service to a new device, computer, or a designated e-mail account.  An application is also available in the Sidekick Catalog to make it easy to export personal data to the Sidekick’s memory card.  Many T-Mobile stores can transfer data from that card to a new T-Mobile device if the customer brings in the memory card and Sidekick.

Oh great, now can I have a Sidekick for cheap just i always wanted this hip phone?

I believe this is the first time a carrier has pretty much forced their customers to get another phone. What if you like your SideKick? That sucks. I’ve never had one but hear the keyboard is the best to have ever did it.

      Apparently you forgot about Kin.

Sidekick molded the current smartphone industry. Kin was the bastard child of non hip non social networking execs trying to make a social phone.

1st American carrier excusive deal.. Kin or Sidekick?
1st Os specific app store.. Kin or Sidekick?
1st Os designed w/ consmer in mind.. Kin or Sidekick?
1st Device to launch modern marketing campaign.. Kin or Sidekick?
1st Consmer device w/ large color screen.. Kin or Sidekick?

I could keep going.. Apple took the Sidekick businss model and the LG Prada and the rest is history.. The Sidekick is the FIRST modern cell phone period..

That wasn’t my argument. When the Kin line ended, everybody that owned one was, for all intents and purposes, forced to upgrade.

Oh good point.. but they did bring the Kin back retooled as a dumb(er) phone..

Well the new Android based Sidekick will be out sometime this year. I’d imagine T-Mobile will give current Sidekick owners great upgrade deals when the new one arrives.

    People still have sidekicks?

    • Symtar

      That’s what I’m saying

Does this mean that the $1 a day sidekick data plan is going away too? Can you guys confirm or deny this please? I grandfathered it and I wanna know if that’s going away as well…?!

    • Jay

I’m not sure, but if your paying $30 per month, Android plans run about the same. Just wait for the new Sidekick later this year.

      Just like they ruined Rare….

      • Anonymous

Fuck I take that personally.. I was never a sidekick fan but they killed off Rare are you serious.. Perfect Dark never had a proper sequel!! The kill off the company that made the best and only exclusive mature Nintendo Games because N64 was killing it at the time.. Who remembers Golden Eye, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong.. Jeez MS messes up stuff with the bureaucracy sometimes

i’m still lost as to why microsoft even bought them, I don’t think anything fruitful ever even came from the deal.
