PC World UK tips pricing on Wi-Fi Motorola XOOM; £449 ($730)

Tablets

For a very brief moment, PC World UK was displaying a pre-order advert for the Wi-Fi Motorola XOOM — complete with pricing — on its website. What’s the bottom line, you ask? £449.99 (that’s around $730USD at today’s exchange rate); the XOOM being hawked by Verizon Wireless currently retails at $799. The Wi-Fi only XOOM has the same specs as the tablet currently being sold here in the States, sans a cellular radio. Hopefully, when this second XOOM leaps across the pond, it will be priced for slightly less than $730. What do you think an appropriate price for the Wi-Fi XOOM is?

What sort of bad timing is this, Motorola?

    • Anonymous

At least give them credit for having the balls to launch. RIM and HP keep leaking their vaporwares and are too afraid to launch and compete with Apple.

      • Scorp

You don’t get credit just because you decided to launch your product early.

$599 or less is the only way I’ll get one

    • Anonymous

Thought it was more or less confirmed to be $599 a while back?

  • BackInAction

It should be $50 less than the iPad2-WiFi with similar storage.

The UK price always includes tax (20%)

    • Anonymous

And that puts it just about $600 us dollars. The article should be updated to reflect that. $608.34 US dollars to be exact.

Why doesn’t BGR mention that the 32G Wifi only Ipad is £500?

What sort of reporting is this?

    • Anonymous

because the ipad came out a year ago. You want a retired firefighter to race a younger recruit?
Even then the ipad and xoom comparisons arent as favorable. Who has more tablet apps? who has better battery life? Who has more accessories designed for it? who has netflix?

it’s not just a specs game.

      • Scorp

Exactly. Android users like to throw around specs but the iPad right now has more functionality than any Android Tablet. The Galaxy tab is whack. even Google said that the OS on it isn’t a tablet OS therefore no tablet apps. Right now what are the best tablet apps for the Xoom?….. that are made for a tablet and not enlarged Droid X apps?

Hoe does Netflix benefit an iPad sold for £500 in Great Britain? Netflix doesn’t exist in the UK.

U guyz think da ipad 2 will b cheapa than da zoom?

    • Scorp

      Yup.

      Both in price and quality

      • Anonymous

Pretty sure the iPad 2 won’t come with ports and advertised features that don’t work out of the box.

they really need to make a 16GB wi-fi only version and price it at or below $499 in order to compete with the iPad’s base model. I mean, the Xoom has an sd slot so 16GB would be enough storage for most and will probably be a good advantage over the upcoming iPad 2 being that the iPad 2 will have upgrades specs i.e. dual cams, better/dual core processor, etc…as much as people bash apple, apple got it right with the pricing of the iPad. And if the iPad 2 will come at a lower price point then, Moto and others will have to slash their prices. Which in the end, will be good for us! Here’s hoping for a lower priced iPad 2 with better specs!

    • Scorp

It’s funny because the manufacturers that use Android on their phones are undercutting the iPhone price and able to sell them at buy 1 get one and deep discounts while pricing higher than the iPad. I don’t get it.

Dang, I think $600 is way too much. $500 is where I might consider it but that’s still ex$pensive for a play toy. Hope some of the other tablets bring some competitive prices to the market.

  • Uptownblk

This will fail at this price!

Actually, 32 GB Wi-Fi-only iPad costs £510.00 in UK, so this one is eve cheaper.

  • Scorp

The current 3G/4G model is already too expensive for this device. Anything over 600 is just stupid for a wifi only version. They will eventually lower the price after a couple months anyway. I’m not in love with everything Apple does but people always slam them for their “overpriced” products (and I agree on some of them) but everyone scoffed at 499 last year and now we wish every tablet came in a 499 version.

  • Trophynuts

not 730$…wtf why would i pay that for a wifi only when for 60 scoobies more i can get one with the cell radio in it.

    • Anonymous

60 up front, plus a monthly data plan you want to say, right?

  • Davva360

It needs to be $50 cheaper than the iPad 2 32Gb wifi model to make any impact.

Here’s why. Go into Bestbuy this weekend and compare the displays for iPad and Xoom.

My local store has a huge iPad and Mac area. Signs that are lit up hung high to highlight the area. The Xoom was on a shelf mixed in among 100s of PC peripherals. It was hard to find it and 2 of the store employees did not know what it was.

Tough for the Xoom to compete in that environment.

    • Trophynuts

yeah i agree. My local BB is set up the same way. I had to hunt around to find the Xoom…i didn’t bother asking the reps.

Everyone saying that it needs to be $599 or $50 dollars cheaper than the iPad equivalent is missing the point that the next iPad is going to have extremely similar specs (if not better) and start at $499 (if not $399).

    • Anonymous

The Droid Xoom is already killIng iPad 2 in sales.

    • Davva360

My point is it needs to be cheaper to compete with iPad 2 because otherwise most consumers will go with the name recognition of iPad.

My point is for most consumers ( not teccies like us) it’s more about price than specs.

  • dwinsmith

    $399

Doesn’t England tack on a VAT? Isn’t it 20%? hence the US price should be $587, rounding up.

Wow, bloggers, just wow. Seriously, I don’t have an MBA in international business, but even i know international prices have no bearing on US prices. Take cars for example. The US and Australian dollar are damn near equal, but cars in OZ cost 2-3x what they do here. For the same car. The UK WiFi Xoom is slightly cheaper than the equivalent iPad, so if we have to guess, an educated guess would put the US Xoom at about $550. Not to far from what we expected.

Hey BGR, please investigate this for us:
If the WiFi version is carrierless, will it has the signed bootloader anyway? I understand the signed bootloader with celular as manufacturers always have to bend over for the operators, but there is no excuse this time. It would be like having a PC for which I cannot strip Windows and install Linux.

  • zps

EPIC FAIL at that price. god, what a joke. the price should be 500.

0…may they shud pay me to take it off them and save them some inventory space…
massing scam before netbook(much worse) and now tablets….
