Motorola XOOM overclocked to 1.5GHz; shreds benchmarks

Tablets

So you’ve gone ahead and purchased a Motorola XOOM for a cool $800. You’ve been politely pawing at it for the last few days, playing by its rules, running at — or under — its manufacturer-designated speed limit. Now what? You overclock that bad boy’s processor… that’s what. XDA forum member coolbho300 has managed to tweak the XOOM’s kernel to get both Cortex-A9 cores running at a benchmark-shredding 1.5GHz. ”I have successfully brought the Tegra 2 in the XOOM to 1.5GHz,” writes coolbho300 in a forum post. “A few kernel modifications make the dual core chip in the XOOM even more powerful than the recently announced Tegra 2 3D. 1.5GHz through two Cortex A9 cores is truly a force to be reckoned with.” We’re not going to argue with that assessment. As you can see from the above image, the device’s performance in benchmark tests is quite impressive (especially when compared to a lowly smartphone). You can hit up XDA to check out the tutorial on how to bring your XOOM up to warp speed… but do be careful.

Now if only my Atrix did not have a locked bootloader. It would be amazing to overclock my phone and achieve similar speeds…

  • Supall

Well…it sure blows the smartphones out of the water. What about the other tablets?

    • Anonymous

it doesn’t fit in a pocket, any smartphone does.

  • Anonymous

I’m not surprised, I went into play with one on Thursday, and was blown away.
Makes the other tablets on the market (which shall remaIn nameless) look liKe liTtle pHones. I really don’t see any announced or upcoming tablets eVen comIng cLose. The hardware on the XOOM should be good for at least a solid year!!! I’m thinking of foregoing the ThunderBolt¡₣ and just getting a XOOOOOOOM!

    • Booboolala2000

Got a Xoom Saturday. And don’t feel the need to update my X for possibly another year. My X is great right now, but the speed that this thing moves at is astounding. LTE will only show that off more as 3g shows its weakness against this tablet. Not gonna tweek this thing until after I send it back to Moto to get the antenna swapped.

      • Anonymous

        Congrats!!!!
And, I completely agree with you on the phone upgrade. I am seriously thinking of skipping the ThunderBolt and just getting the XOOOOOOOM.
I can’t really stand this DROID X because of Motoblur but it will do if I get the XOOM; I can always keep it and just root it and install a custom cook. I held off on rooting this thing because I was going to ditch it on CL after I got the Bolt’

Sidenote: After playing with the XOOM, I really couldn’t comprehend Boy Genius’ quip about the position of the unlock / power on/off button being on the back; when you pick up the tablet it is naturally and logically where a non-intrusive unlock / power on/off button should be. But, I guess he’s just one of those iOwners who’s used to having everything the same Apple way.

      • Booboolala2000

Yeah. The position of the on/ off button is fine for me. Its right where my fingers are. One gripe is the volume buttons. Just not real great. An on screen option woukd be great.

So what’s the advantage of overclocking, besides making your battery life terrible.

    • Anonymous

Choice and freedom. And it not being apple. That is what is so great about DROID. We may not be productive in the world but we can make our processors out perform others. DROID FTW!

      • Anonymous

Right because BB and iOS are inherently more productive…

And @keymaker – speed, speed, speed. You don’t even need to sacrifice battery life. Before people start screaming “blasphemy!!” let me tell you…My EVO running baked snack’s custom kernel overclocked to 1.215 using SetCPU is faster AND has longer battery life (attributable to the custom kernel).

can i get a link or 2 for your evo setup? seems like you have yours running at near full potential. thanks kyle

      • Jroc869

exactly, if i would have seen this i wouldnt have wasted my time responding to the initial idiots post.

      • http://twitter.com/doublejrecords justTrollingForLULZ

        2ed request for link

      • Anonymous

For all those requesting a link, I don’t want it getting truncated, so it goes like this:

        www. bakedsnackshack ..com

If you go to the Downloads page and click HTC EVO 4G you can find all the flashing instructions. I used UnrEVOked to root, and flashed Baked Snack 1.8 (I prefer it over 1.9) with the custom kernel and it’s god-awesome. Let me know if you have issues.

      • Booboolala2000

Yeah, most people don’t understand that a properly coded kernel overclocking the processor actually uses less juice because the processor is working for a smaller amount of time performing the same task. Plus battery life in this thing is huge already. Heavy constant use non stop is 10 hrs. Standby up to 11 days.

    • Jroc869

once again someone talking out of their ass. Im overclocked on my droid x and my battery life stayed the same maybe just a little better. being able to control how your phone processes you can actually squeeze more battery out of it. just set up profiles which are easy to do. before you open your mouth crapple fan boy check your facts.

      • Anonymous

Yea thats what people want, to tweak and fiddle with their phone every 2 seconds? In iOS you never have to even think about closing, opening processes, or anything like that.

      • KCRic

No but at least if we don’t like the notification setup, we can change it. What can you do with your iPhone? Oh that’s right – run all the sh!t Google puts out there and of course play Angrybirds and some lame a$$ racing game. Go back to sipping you frapomocha vanilla java latte yuppie. We’ll let you know when the world is safe enough for you to come out.

      • Anonymous

@KCRic haha are you trying to say android users don’t play games and just solve quadratic equations all day?

      • Booboolala2000

Angry Birds Seasons is good on this thing, but Fruit Ninja THD rocks. In ios you don’t multitask really anyway, lol.

      • Jroc869

dude what the hell are you talking about. you install set cpu or whatever overclocking app you want you make ur profiles and ur done and then again you dont even have to do that but its nice to be able to tell the processor how to run when lets say your phone is isnt on etc. plus as was already mentioned the custom kernels are making the processor run better. so tired of people who dont know something chiming in like they do. go put some more apps on ur iphone cus thats about all you can do with that pos phone

  • Davva360

I would have liked to have seen a chart with the unclocked Xoom on it as a comparison seeing as most consumers are not going to root their device it would be more relevant.

  • http://twitter.com/DavisDarvish Davis Darvish

my gtab scores 3333 on quadrant

  • Anonymous

This chart needs the stock Atrix mark included, it sits around 2600

  • anon

Why do this? Wouldn’t they ship it at 1.5 if they thought that the hardware could handle it? How is your battery life at this speed? Does it get hot? I’m not sure about what could happen, but it seems to me that the system isn’t designed for this. On the other hand, it is conceivable that a chip maker might try to to make us think that today’s latest chip is new and improved when it is actually just the same as the previous one with an artificial limit removed.

  • Mordechai Daniel

That plus $3.00 and an iPad and you can even watch Movies and TV shows while drinking a Cafe Latte. By itself it doesn’t do squat. The tablet can be super uber goober light speed… right now it doesn’t have the functionality to do f-all. And before you call me an Apple fanboi… I have a Galaxy Tab, and a Fascinate… I won’t buy Apple products because I refuse to be caged… but you have to admit it’s cool how the iPad does and the droid tablets don’t.

    • KCRic

      Does what?

      • Mordechai Daniel

        Media.

  • http://twitter.com/cefranco2 Carlos Franco

i’m an iphone user but if i had to go Andriod, i’d still much prefer a stock build like the Nexus S. I’d wait for the next untouched Andriod dual core to come out. That’ll be something.

  • Anonymous

And the battery life goes down to 2 hours. Who needs it?

  • Obj_me

How the hell is the N1 still destroying the competition in benchmarks? Hell it’s over a year old and using a last gen snapdragon!!! I’m assuming that’s the magic of software optimization… That’s where iOS, WebOS and some others hold an advantage over Android as limited hardware with each generation, especially with Apple and HPalm(we’ll see ho big that product line gets!), allow for device specific optimizations that would not be otherwise possible with the ocean of android devices available. Unless the HW OEM’s or Google does those device-specific optimizations, which will never ever happen, I doubt we’ll ever see there true potential. It’s crazy that the N1 is still beating-out the competition, it’s also a shame that the hardware on the market today may never realize it’s true performance potential. While the xoom benches look amazing imagine if the shipping version of Android was specifically tweaked and optimized for this particular tablet… Oh well I guess that’s the downfall to Googles business plan in terms of Android(as far as the end user is concerned!), I guess it’s to be expected when the market is saturated(…and fragmented… Ergh…) with a million Android devices. Anyhow I love that there is such a healthy hacking community for all of these mobile OSes, especially Android! I don’t know where us geeks would be without these folks! Curiously though, I wonder how stable it’s running at those clocks and how hot it gets…
