All high-end Motorola smartphones will ship with Webtop later this year

mobile

According to Sanjay Jha, Chairman and CEO of Motorola Mobility, the company will begin including Webtop functionality on all “high performance” smartphones in the second half of 2011. Webtop is the name Motorola has given to the application that provides an interface between the laptop-dock accessory — currently being used by the ATRIX 4G — and a smartphone device. Mr Jha also went on to note that the only reason Webtop was not included on the DROID BIONIC was due to “time constraints”; no word on if the BIONC will get a laptop-dock of its own down the road. If we could make one request of Moto, it would be this: please make a universal laptop-dock. We don’t want our gadget drawers littered with antiquated Motorola phones and laptop-docks in a few years.

As long as the accessories are universal this could be a smart move. I am not sure how capable the web top is right now as I have not used one but if it is possible for developers can take advantage of web top it could be a game changer.

Yeah. Motorola needs to adopt one standard. Changing out docks every time I get a new phone is ridiculous. At least on the XOOM my charging dock had an adapter for charging with the case on. And while your at it…do with the bootloaders on all future phones as you have with the XOOM.

say what you will. the Motorola we knew as the StarTec maker, and had been given no chance just a year ago, guess what ladies and gentleman, Moto is the leader in the smartphone industry. tegra 2, check. 2 GHZ CPU’s, check. 4.3 inch monsters, check. going over to the tablet world, you got the Xoom which is the most capable tablet as of now. (tegra 2, dual core and supports multi-platforms for video streaming flash, HTML5).

      DROID DOES!!!!!

      • Booboolala2000

XOOM is not a Droid fucktard iphone fanboy.

      Streaming flash?

Fact: The Xoom you can buy today DOES NOT have Flash. Google “Xoom irony”.

      • Darwin

Heh not only that the SD card slot doesn’t work, 4G doesn’t work, Flash doesn’t work, the build quality is terrible with uneven seams, cheap buttons and a washed out screen. Oh and its more expensive than the iPad. The next iPad will be announced on Wednesday. They should have just named the Xoom the Zune and gotten it over with because the same thing will happen.

      • Idea4life

Seriously, you had not used XOOM. The way you talk is just to bad mouth a product which you had not used and no idea about…

      • Steve Hillshire

The original Droid didn’t ship with flash either. But Moto lived up to the promise and delivered flash. Meanwhile, iPhone 4? *STILL* no flash support. But that’s because flash is a dying technology that millions of websites use.

Meanwhile in the real world Motorola’s financials are dismal.

  • Apple Fanboy

thatz fine dey still cannot compete wit apple cuz dey come out with krap! lol

This is the most sensible article all weekend. I second the motion and request; too bad that DROID BIONIC has no laptop dock. And, it’s really a shame that the Atrix is on Cingular.

I can’t buy a phone from that dude.

    • Darwin

      Heh.

His job was to split Motorola creating a mobile division and then find someone dumb enough to buy the Mobile division. Its in his contract and his salary and bonus are based on that happening. They already tried to sell mobile devices once and nobody wanted it expect for some company in india nobody ever hear of.

You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. Try again.

  • @j_nathaniel

It seems like Motorola is making one heck of an effort to get back on top. The laptop dock idea may just gain some serious traction if their phones really have the capability to run it well. I am looking forward to actually playing with one to see how well they work.

I definitely agree, there needs to be a universal dock to allow all of their phones to be compatible with this accessory because if I buy one and then switch to another Motorola phone I will not be willing to buy another Motorola laptop dock unless it is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the one I would (potentially) own. In fact, if I was put in that position, of having to buy a different one for switching phones, I’d probably just go with another company’s product or back to a dedicated tablet like the iPad I am using right now.

The webtop thing is a good idea, just needs to be less laggy and cheaper. Also the universal thing–No reason that couldn’t be done even with different phones, just make a simply plastic adapter that goes in the dock to adjust the shape.

  • Petas

Ill take one, hold the blur, it gives my phone diarrhea.

  • Moto_Whirl

I think that the webtop is going to be the way to go in the future. It is thinner and lighter than my friend’s MacBook Pro, and it runs dual core processors. It seems like Motorola has the trifecta — a really thin notebook, a smart phone and a tablet — and Apple is way behind. They did such a good job with their Honeycomb too. Apple better get Honeycomb on their tablets and phones fast!!!! They are so slow at updating.

MOTO, Regularly give us the latest android (e.g. Gingerbread) on your phone and rather than giving us something we can surely do without!

  • Darwin

Stranger things have happened but i think it is really unlikely these smartphone laptop devices will sell.

  • Rudyy50

    wow! webtop! yawn.

As long as Moto continues to produce shit phones (D2G latest example) they could call their additive Shittop to make it more closely align with the quality.

this is one kind of smart phone produced by Motorola…..

  • the Individual11

Hey moto, nice idea. Now just give me a reason to actually want one of your phones. How about MAKING THAT DAMN BLUR OPTIONAL, make it so people that HATE IT can turn it off. Then release some premier phones to other carriers than verizon. It’s nice that verizon gets good moto phones, but there are other carriers and that opens a bigger market. You only release your crap phones on the other networks. The people on t-mobile think that moto phones suck because you give them phones like the cliq, cliq xt and charm that cannot be upgraded and have that laggy blur crap.
