Apple OS X Lion 10.7 new features wrap up so far

Software

Ever since Apple released Mac OS X Lion 10.7 to developers to test, new features have started to become uncovered. 9to5Mac has been doing a great job compiling a list of some new (and pretty lust-worthy) features that are available in the next version of Apple’s operating system for the PC, and here’s a brief recap of what you can expect to see come summer:

  • TRIM support for super-fast SSD writing
  • Recovery partition to your startup hard drive removing the need for the OS X installer disc in case something goes wrong
  • Possible Dropbox-like functionality for MobileMe storage
  • Find my Mac functionality in Apple’s MobileMe service
  • Removed support for PowerPC applications
  • Removed Front Row (possible it’s only in the seeded development OS, however)
  • Podcast Producer, a true podcast production tool letting you create various shows, episodes, and effortless edit, upload, and share your podcasts
  • Yahoo IM! support in iChat including video and audio conferencing, iOS-style symbol keys (hold down a key on your keyboard and an onscreen symbol list appears like in iOS), and live URL previews when you hover over a URL link

There are many more findings in Mac OS X 10.7, but these are some of the exciting smaller ones that haven’t yet been announced.

So u guys only post on the weekend if its news about Apple huh?

    • Anonymous

Yes, that way all of those old iFarts who post their 9 year old sons’ pictures with their profile photo, and, who rant and ramble about their girlfriend’s panties, can discover new and innovative ways to sync their iPhones and learn of the next $3000 iteration must-have!

      • wow…that guy really hurt ya feelings on the last post, haha… at least pretend that you have a life…

      • Anonymous

Yes, yes, numetheus you hurt my feelings soooooo much in that last post.
I am so hurt, I may even start rambling about my girlfriend’s underwear.

        Wa-wa-wa………

I believe that Apple pays these sites to post their news. There is no way people are actually interested in reading about Apple news. I can say with confidence that the handful of commentors including myself and you guys are really what matters. We need more news on various DROID OS updates. Like seriously. I need answers to why my device(s) are still stuck on 2.1 and 2.2 when 2.3 has been for a while now. No one cares about Apple changing hardware and software specs. No one uses their iCrap. DROID FTW!

      • Guestone

apparently droid is an after thought you twit.

      • Spand

I didn’t know there was a “DROID” mobile operating system. I have however, heard of an Android OS. Stop confusing a damned line of phones with an OS!!!!

Lol you guys complain a lot, if you do not like what bgr and other tech blogs write about (via Apple or Google), then why do make your own tech blog?

      • Anonymous

Because we don’t have the resources, or else I’m sure each one of us would. These sites are highly networked and get news much more quickly. I just wish I could block apple news because it’s usually superfluous.

      • Anonymous

Well do not get me wrong, but you can always just visit other tech blogs that do offer articles on different topics. Hey that is what I do. Also some blogs have a way to filter out stories about a certain company or topic (although to my knowledge BGR does not offer this).

Hooray for recovery partitions! Usually when my hard drive suffers catastrophic failure, my recovery partition is there to save the day. Wait, don’t tell me… if my hard drive goes, my recovery partition goes too. Damn. So much for that wasted 8Gb partition.

True that, my hd went out last month, luckily I had a recent time machine backup on my time capsule. Seems like a waste of space to me. My company laptop wich is a dell (gross) couldn’t even take advantage of its recovery partition when it died.

      • http://www.facebook.com/peterf Peter Fares

You could have set up the Dell to do an external full backup, too.
The Dell can’t take advantage of a recovery partition if the hard drive died, and neither can a mac.

    • Anonymous

So no one uses time machine anymore?

  • Watching tbs

I know it seems small but I’ve been waiting so ling for iChat to support yahoo messenger!! So happy about that. Only question is can yahoo messenger people web cam with aim people?

    • Anonymous

Huh? How does that make sense? Yahoo and AOL ….think about it.

  • rawrrrmonster

*sigh* i just got snow leopard a couple months ago

    • Tom

It’s not as if Apple has shocked people and released the Lion beta out of nowhere. They announced Lion 4 months ago at the ‘Back to The Mac’ event in October…

  • Tedley

How about adjustable system fonts like Windows has had for years?

But I guess since Steve doesn’t wear glasses, they aren’t interested in customers with less than 20/15
vision. In all seriousness, the lack of this BASIC functionality is a show stopper for a lot of people. It doesn’t
matter how good the OS is and how much cutting-edge social networking “crap” gets implemented, if you can’t read the screen, it’s useless.

    • Guestz

      you can zoom in…duh

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4FCM5OSC7NDKLOWF5D4KAAJBLI Ted

That’s not a comparable feature to increasing fonts like in windows. It was intended for viewing something temporarily, not a s a permanent solution to fonts that are too small. If you are going to
suggest a feature, understand its intended use first. DUH!!!

The point is that this “premium” OS is missing a fundamental accessibility feature
Apple has it’s strong points, but it’s by no means a panacea of operating systems.
Windows does do some things better that Apple. This is one example. I have worked
with both and see strength and weaknesses in both.

If you want to try something a little more thoughtful than “you can zoom in DUH”. I invite you, but I somehow doubt you have it in you.

Oh and don’t even suggest reducing resolution. You loose clarity and screen real estate. Face it,
Apple just ignored an “important for many” feature.

If youwant to try something better

      • RealityCheck

If screen zoom is only intended for “temporary” use then it’s the first I’ve heard. I’ve found that MacOS provides FAR greater functionality for visually impaired users than Windows does. People at the National Federation for the Blind seem to agree as well.

how about cut and paste in finder?

yay!!! podcasting if for masses now!!!

WOW, TRIM support. Welcome to 2009. BTW, TRIM does not improve the write speed.

And while it s nice to see native support for a recovery partition, ThinkPad’s have had this for years.

    • http://twitter.com/hgcowner KlownGoblin

TRIM improves “REWRITE” speeds by keeping previously used blocks clean and reinitialized

  • RealityCheck

I’m an Apple fan, but this feature list sounds like a downgrade to me. I keep regular backups, both full and Time Machine, and have no interest in a recovery partition vacuuming up 8 GB of my hard drive. I also use a ton of PPC/Rosetta apps. As much as I’ve been psyched by every other OS X release, it looks like I’ll be skipping this one.
