Huawei asks for government investigation; wants to sell telecom equipment in U.S.

Business

Looking to assuage the previously expressed concerns of some lawmakers, Chinese telecom juggernaut Huawei is asking for a formal U.S. government investigation into its businesses. Huawei is looking to sell its equipment to United States companies, but has been met by heavy political headwinds. Our company is asking for this investigation ”in an effort to reach a clear and accurate conclusion,” writes Huawei.

“Efforts to do business in the United States in the past 10 years had been hurt by misperceptions,” reports Reuters. This includes “unproven claims of ‘close connections with the Chinese military.’”

Huawei made the request this week via an open letter on its website. The coalition of lawmakers who have opposed the company’s entrance into the U.S. market place have yet to issue a statement.

we can’t do …what happened to. Free market…. If they are doing everything legally and asking for investigations , I see no reason why they are being denied to operate in the USA….. ever heard the terms FREE TRADE and LIBERALISM….

Why would the US -home of the free market, open competition ever want to stop a new company from selling its wares to US consumers. Yes, I know Huawei are very, very big but so is the US market.

It’s a national security issue, not economic. A primary concern is the company’s very close ties to the Chinese military would allow them access to telecommunications systems installed by Huawei during a conflict, God forbid it should ever happen. I don’t know which side of the issue I fall on, but it’s a legitimate concern.

really man are you retarded? I’m an economist and while I believe in total free trade and capitalism, I can not apply the same principals to China. This isn’t Germany or south america that we’re talking about, we’re talking about a country that openly exploits labor, hacks and steals industrial propietary intelectual property (google, hp, volkswagon/car makers in the 80s). This is not mentioning that the Chinese government has their hand in every single company in their country, its no conspiracy, its the truth. For Huwai to say they have no connection with the military is like saying the ocean has nothinghas nothing to do with fish t

If one looks to the Greek cell phone wiretap, one can see why the US doesn’t want Huawei in the US. No matter who actually was responsible, the US certainly doesn’t want the same thing happening here. I don’t think there is a boycott as much as not-so-subtle hints to the carriers that if they deploy Huawei equipment, they won’t get any Federal contracts.

Sounds like good ol’ fashioned protectionism to me. Hypocrites.
