Apple applies for trademark on ‘Places’ in EU, China; hints at social network?

Software

Cupertino based Apple, Inc. has filed for a trademark on the word “Places” in both the European Union and China, reports Patently Apple. The original filing was submitted on February 23rd and covers international classes 009, 041, 042, and 045. The first three classes cover a hodgepodge of computer services, software, and hardware. But class 045 pertains specifically to social networking services; “providing a social networking website; assisting in the locating of people using a global positioning system (GPS).” Apple has already dipped its toe in the social networking pool with its Ping music discovery service, which, as far as we can tell, no one uses. For the past few years, the company has used the “places” name in its iPhoto and iOS software, although, that doesn’t seem worthy of a full trademark filing. Any guesses?

    This is hardly sponge-worthy news…

Yea, I’m sure that Google is just going to roll over on that one. Places?

Google won’t be rolling over anything, IMO. Facebook is great at the moment and people aren’t going to switch…UNLESS they (Google) implement a way to upload your current profile from facebook and integrate it with theirs (Facebook now allows you to download all your content).

Google Places isn’t so much of a social networking app, just more of a rating commenting on places app. Been out for at least a year already.

Oh wow, an Apple social network? That is one I will stay far, far away from. Just imagine, it would be a plethora of Gizmodo-loving-tight-jean-hipster-’ites complaining about the beverage temperature of a cappuccino at a local coffee shop, or how much sleep they lost waiting for the next iOS update.

You know what this makes me think of? Nothing. Next story please.

So they’re going to copy Google’s name to copy Google’s Panaramio service?

Just like Apple … trademark something that’s already in use. When is the last time Apple actually innovated rather than just trying to make something cool out of old technologies?

    BTW: What about Facebook Places?

    • Johnathan

What about it, Apple already had Places is iPhoto 09

      • http://blog.glcomputing.com.au/ GLComputing

And I went places many years before that… what’s your point?

      • Tee

Google Places has been trademarked already for years. That is what’s about it. And it’s also used as a feature Twitter and Facebook. And let’s not neglect foursquare.

Does anyone know how it will be spelled in China? √Π^€£™ ??

    Ni Haooooo……..

I’m getting so I can’t stand Apple. They attempt to control everything. I can’t believe there isn’t a “Day of Rage” rebellion against them in the era of openness.

    Up next: Apple trademarks “mobile”.

Someone go through Webster’s dictionary and trademark every fricken word so Apple can’t! Apple originality = zero.

If Microsloth can trademark the term “Windows”, which was a generic industry term at the time, there is no reason why Apple can’t trademark “Places”. I think I’ll trademark the words “Comment” and “Feedback”.

There are grandmothers out there who are rocking Iphones. The Iphone is over people. Wake up. The only thing the Iphone has going for it is itunes and the app store. Won’t be long before those two items are out done either. The iphone was the shit when it wasn’t common place, when apple was trying to be revolutionary, before apple scammed people by putting out minor updates and a new casing.

A lot of people don’t want to admit it, but the iphone isn’t the cool thing to do anymore. It’s a habit…

    • Neoofthesith

I didn’t realize that the only reason I have an iPhone is because it was trendy.

      • Booboolala2000

        No you’re know. BBD

  • hiniit

ok, first there was Bing, then Ping

first there was spaces, then places?

there still must be some at XEROX who have seen this before

  • Booboolala2000

Google already used an app called “Places”

  • Mrwirez

Yeah… pretty sure the Beatles owned “Apple” first. Their patents are weak. Google should cry foul…
