Google video visualizes global Android activations

mobile

No platform in recent history has grown as fast as Google’s Android OS, and now Google has created a quick video to help us visualize the Android phenomenon. The sequence was first shown ahead of former CEO Eric Schmidt’s keynote at Mobile World Congress, and this week Google finally posted it to its Android Developers YouTube account. The video gives us a visual representation of all Android device activations from October 2008, when the platform launched, through the end of December 2010. It also displays helpful indicators just ahead of major device launches, such as the Motorola DROID launch in November 2009. Hit the jump for the video and prepare to be wowed.

Thanks, Will

The activations in Africa are most surprising…

    • Wutang933

what do you mean by uprising? there aren’t that many activations in Africa
and if you mean surprising then don’t be; there are many families in that continent who lives like a king

      • waxonwaxoff

He said SURPRISING not uprising. He was probably talking about the activations in places most of us didn’t know had cell service… a minimum of 3G at that. Chill out – no one’s dissing your continent. The only place most people even know of in Africa is either Nairobi, Kenya or Johannesburg, South Africa so to see activations on the west side would be surprising to most.

It’s amazing to see how technology like this affects the free world. I love how in the US, you can see the activations along the Mississippi. You can also see in the video of Asia, how active South Korea is compared to their northern communist counterparts. Very cool!

Koreans love them some Samsung, When I was there even my apartment windows were Samsung, along with my TV, fridge, washer, and on demand water heater.

Now they need to show cancelations.

      Zing!

what’s amazing is that every other blog posted this yesterday. BGR is just old news these days.

BGR could’ve one-upped with iPhone activations video, but …

      • Tim242

Ha! There would be a small spike on preorder arrivals, then back to a dark
        map.

so i put my headphones on only to find that there’s no music. cmon Google have some respect for your own product presentation to your own video streaming service, you could easily be getting more views if only you added some music to it, which benefits YOU GOOGLE GOD DAMN IT HIRE ME

Pretty awesome. I bet Steve Ballmer wishes he could grow hair at the same rate.

Actually, if you play that video backwards………..
it would represent the deceleration and devolution of Windows Mobile!!

This is cool to see “visualized”.
Windows controls PCs worldwide, but install numbers/money/programs have nothing to do with how good a Computer OS is according to Macheads.
Roles reversed with iPhone money/numbers/apps have everything to do with how good the product is(or at least that’s the dead horse being kicked)

I can’t ‘rag’ on Windows Desktop platforms; I just wish their Mobile platform had evolved better, technically.

      Cool Avatar,

    And skynet rises!!! :-)

Google why don’t you give us 2.3 and push manufactures to speed up the updates I’m still pissed about my Crappy and really like how iOS handles their updates like they really have some balls.

      Your Crapyy?

Root your phone and do it yourself or buy an iphone. We all know the carriers hold us “OS” hostage long enough so [some] buy new phones. That’s just the way it is..

I gave my old Droid 1 to my wife and put Gingerbread 2.3.3 on it yesterday..It took one hour for everything to be set up. You are right in one respect, one stipulation of the carriers using Android should be timely updates mandated by Google.. I would point you in a direction to root your phone but, I don’t know what brand “Crappy” is… lol

Its the next BIG thing…. Best of Luck Andr…

  • Geexoid

surprising how Australia doesn’t have as much activations

  • KCRic

Is that a dot there in Greenland? A couple in BFE Canada and Russia too. Maybe they should put Antarctica in there…

  • Ddn25

anyone know the technology they used to do this mapping? Is it available to the public?

  • Steel

Yeah, no big surprises here. We were all begging manufacturers to match Android w/ a competent hardware & carrier solution. Hence, Droid was a hit. No mystery.

    • Supall

True, but the amazing thing is how the US just lights up. I mean, we see the graphs, we see the statistics, but to see it on a geographic, real-time scale is really an eye opener.

  • Tmamer2007

You’re kidding right? android growing the fastest in recent history? I’d like to see the same visual for iOS.

  • Notjunk

fascinating display of hard to grasp data… excellent job.

would love to see the “apple vs android” data…
