Motorola XOOM must go back to factory for LTE upgrade; to take 6 business days

Tablets

New intel gathered by enthusiast blog Droid-Life sheds some light on the steps Motorola XOOM owners are going to have to take to make their tablets LTE compatible. Approximately 90 days after launch, customers can send their XOOM units back to Motorola, free of charge, for the promised LTE upgrade. The whole process, according to a Talking Points data sheet, should take six business days. The memo also notes that users “do not have to change their [data] plan when transitioning to 4G LTE.” Hit the jump to have a look at the document for yourself… and let us know what you think.

Had plans to buy mine first thing tomorrow morning. But after reading this article along with some of the other features that will not be active at launch have caused me officially smash the “Pause” button. No need to rush out and buy a crippled product at full price only to ship it out later for firmware updates and no idea of whose handling my tablet. In around about way, I’m “hoping” this article isn’t true – much like last weeks Best Buy price point release.

LOL, Moto is really screwing the pooch on this release.

Maybe they should just sell the thing as parts, 1 new part a week, and we can all assemble it in a few months…

That will give Adobe time to figure out Flash for it…

This is funny. When did Apple cut a deal for Motorola to handle their marketing? Did Motorola Mobile learn their business tactics from US Auto-makers? This just in. You have to buy a Chrysler for your Xoops to power up.

If it has to go back to Moto for the 4G upgrade then it’s not a 4G device like they said it is. I wonder how many more little secrets are they still hiding.

There is a lot that can be said about the Xoom and while not a lot of people live in a 4g area anyway I wouldn’t complain. Flash is being optimized for this tablet for touch input and it will use far less of the CPU so the experience will be second to none and 32GN of storage is a lot and while the sdcard slot not working out of the box is a fail its not that big of a deal since it will be within a matter of weeks bit the main issue is no other entry models cause a 16gb version or wifi only at launch would have been amazing

sending it to motorola to get 4G makes no sense, upgrade the device at the store before the customer leaves or push out an update if it software related. sending a device in for maintenance does nothing good for motorola or the consumer

this is actually pretty lame….once again, android products coming out to the market before they are actually ready for primetime

Almost as bad as apple having to send out bumpers…

fail. considered switching from ipad but this is a joke what Motorola delivers here.
    1. $800 for a 1st generation product ?
    2. forced to have one month data contract
    3. mail in device for 4G upgrade. why not at Verizon in-store ?

6 days? Will they waive your monthly fee if you are in contract?
    Shipping cost?
    This is just stupid.

They are really testing early adopters.

I don’t care what OS fandom you align yourself with, that is just absolute horse shit.

My guess is they are betting a lot of people will not go through the process of upgrading saving Motorila some cash.

Still it is a disappointing approach.

What’s all the whining for girls? You can wait for all the extras, lte., software compatability, flash yada yada yada. Or buy and enjoy it now. No one is holding a gun to your heads and there are no other Honeytabs to buy so zip it. This is a great piece of tech.
