AT&T announces Android 2.2 (Froyo) update for Samsung Captivate begins tomorrow, Aria soon

Software

Fear not AT&T Captivate owners, for after tomorrow, your handset will only be one major Android OS revision behind the most current code-base, not two. AT&T has taken to Facebook to let us know that the long awaited Froyo (Android 2.2) update for its Galaxy S-branded Captivate will begin making its way to handsets tomorrow. The company also posted an interview with its Android Senior Project Manager, Dante Martin, who let us know that 2.2 for the HTC Aria will be here “soon” (we’ve heard that before). We’ve included the video for you after the break. Enjoy!

Thanks, Todd!

IF you don’t root, I’ve been on froyo on my fascinate for about a month now and I love it. And punk.kaos is working on a CM7 port as we speak it is in alpha right now, MIUI is also in alpha…development on this phone has picked up a lot as of late, bringing out this phones true potential :)

Sadly, the only way to get the Fascinate worthwhile is to root and rely on the dev community to fix the POS. This is the first and last Samsung I’ll ever own.

well one of the best thing about the galaxy s series is the large development community so it’s very easy to ditch the carriers and their restrictions…
doesn’t excuse them for taking so long to get their versions out but the phones are all a lot more useful with one of the many custom roms available for free

That is sad.. my old original droid has gingerbread running as smooth as gorilla glass. Thanks for letting me know… I will never buy a Samsung.

Is it not funny how ‘Amazingly’ updates happen AFTER a new phone always comes out (Hmm what just came out the other day.. thinking..thinking.. oh yeah the Atrix. What a bunch of crud that they need to Test and re Test and add bits etc etc. Other peeps and XDA go wham bam..done and it works. It is just very obvious that they hold on to working updates to push out new phones.

Its like Doctors and health insurance..they are in cahoots with each other, in this case the Telecommunications companies and the Phone makers. UGGH.

Sorry I’m on Moto Atrix but I had my captivate on 2.2 since last year thanks to XDA

I thought HTC said the Aria wasn’t going to be updated. Not enough horsepower to run Froyo.

    Dear AT&T:

I Love The Way You Lie…

I keep my $10 a month unlimited data by buying unlocked phones. In this case, the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 8GB (formerly i9000T).

This site should be called, “BGR and the QQ’s” LOL! If you understand the true nature of Android, you would not be complaining about having to ‘root’ anything! I have had Froyo damn near out of the box when I got mine. Samsung has pushed out their updates (especially in Europe) for this phone. XDA keeps us Americans up to snuff because of those European updates too! So I am sick of hearing about how Samsung sucks because they don’t update! B*llsh*t!! It’s the freaking carriers! Get over it already!

I think I just became an official member of BGR and the QQ’s! LOL

I agree it’s the carriers. I have said before there should be a simple idiot proof way to download stock android updates direct from Google for any handset. Those that want the Blur, Touchwiz or Sense skins can wait, everyone else can run stock and everyone is happy.

Having said all that, Samsung are still on the list of companies I will never deal with again after a TV fiasco I had with them but that’s a whole different story.

“I got the phone in my pocket, it’s real and the one you have isn’t.” love that comment.
