Apple’s MacBook Pro specs leak; Light Peak port to be dubbed ‘Thunderbolt’?

Rumor

The Apple rumor-mill is really churning out some product this week. According to site fscklog, the above image is a preview of what the new 13-inch MacBook Pro will look like. What’s new and notable? An Intel Core i5 processor, SDXC card slot, available matte screen, and Intel’s Light Peak technology. Renamed by Apple as Thunderbolt — which is totally different than the ThunderBolt — Intel’s high-speed bus technology provides data transfer speeds of 10Gb per second — with speeds of up to 100Gb/s in the future. “At 10Gb/s, you could transfer a full-length Blu-Ray movie in less than 30 seconds,” explains Intel. It has been widely rumored that Apple and Intel will hold independent press conferences on Thursday to formally introduce the new wares. Hit the jump for an image of the purported Thunderbolt logo.

HTC won’t be happy this morning.

    • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

I was just going to say I don’t think HTC will be happy… seriously though, surely there will be a lawsuit. I know it’s not the exact same technology but we all know how companies are with their branding.

The good thing is that those phones are here today and gone tomorrow and no one remembers their names. Individual phone models are rarely branded as strongly as say Droid or iPhone. In fact, aside from the iPhone, I can’t think of a single phone that has been on the market for more than 12 months.

      • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

Any BlackBerry model excluding the Torch, because they almost never change their phones – they’ve been around for more than 12 months!

Droid is not an individual phone model, it is a marketing scheme from Verizon to indicate any top-tier smartphone regardless of manufacturer that runs Android OS.

Motorola’s Droid, Droid 2, Droid 2 Global, Droid Pro, R2D2 Droid, Droid X
HTC’s Incredible is also called a “Droid.”

There are some Android phones that use Bing instead of Google – those phones are not carried under the Droid name.

Just checked the dimensions of this leak and compared it to the current 13-in. MBP and they are the same. Sorry no Macbook Air thinness due to a lack of an optical drive…too bad

1280 x 800 resolution on the 13-inch? FAIL. The inclusion of a matte option would be heavenly. If the screen res is the same as the current one, I’m not buying. I’ll spring for a new MBA 13-inch to replace my aging 2007 white polycarb MB. Too bad the new MBAs aren’t matte and don’t have backlight. Two things I really need back.

    • Runciter

Hate to break it to you, but the existing 13″ MBP/MB has the same 1280 x 800 resolution…

Can’t crApple be original; they either redistribute and repackage the same product or just take someone else’s idea.

    iThieves!!!!

    • Droidpoop

Pls name the “someone else’s” idea. ParaDroid much?

Newsflash: Steve receiving ‘B. Jobs’ this morning, go stand on line!

P.S. ThunderBolt, Thunderbolt, thunderbolt, THUNDERBOLT, tHunderbolt, etc; already trademarked by HTC, regardless of whether it’s lower case, upper case, or, a combination thereof!!!

      • Droid reall poop

pls explain..HTC Thunderbolt is a PHONE. Apple Thunderbolt is a plug. HTC can’t trademark the use of thunderbolt for all use. I think god created Thunderbolt and he did trademark it. If I were HTC, I should be worried.

        Paradroid.

        Grow up.

        @kentadams

No! Now go get on Steve’s line!!

      • Anonymous

        @ the other guy ‘poop’

I’m pretty sure that HTC has trademarked the branding and marketing rights to the use of ThunderBolt. And, I’m sure, with broader scope than just the word. Of course, that requires full review of the application itself. As for GOD, I saw him the other day on Mount Sinai; he doesn’t mind because we are all his children, especially the Chinese. He loves a good WonTon soup, just like the rest of us.

Now, go stand on Steve’s line and say 2 Hail Mary’s afterwards!

  • Ljbad4life

the i5 is great, but the intel graphics are totally and utterly crap. I call false on this one if it doesn’t have an nvidia (or ati) descrete graphics card!

The 13″ MBA has a 1440×900 screen. There’s no way Apple would leave the 13″ MBP at a lower res for the same size screen. This can’t be accurate.

Just in time for my new MacBook purchase. Sweet!

  • Anonymous

Yeah but if it’s named Thunderbolt. i doubt it has anything to do with Apple. Light peak port comes from intel so it’s not a Apple thing. The port will be available on PCs too since it’s from intel.

    • Ryon

Thunderbolt would be Apple’s name for Light Peak, just as FireWire is their name for IEEE 1394 and AirPort Extreme is their name for 802.11g/n.

  • Anonymous

To all those concerned about Apple taking the name Thunderbolt when HTC is using it, I just checked the US Trademark database and HTC doesn’t have a Thunderbolt trademark. Verizon has one, but its restricted to mobile phones. There are 50 trademarks under Thunderbolt in the database, all are very specific.

That’s says Bluetooth 2.3! Finally an update to the Bluetooth in the MacBook line as well
