Microsoft releases its first Windows Phone 7 update (no copy/paste support)

mobile

Microsoft on Monday announced that its first software update for the Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system is now available. Unfortunately, this is not the update most users have been waiting for — it does not include the exciting updates Microsoft has been dangling over users’ heads such as third-party multitasking support and better state-saving. In fact, it doesn’t even include support for copy/paste functionality. From Microsoft’s blog:

This first update for Windows Phone is designed to improve the software update process itself. So while it might not sound exciting, it’s still important because it’s paving the way for all future goodie-filled updates to your phone, such as copy and paste or improved Marketplace search.

Users will be notified of the update on their devices, and they will need to connect their phones to a Mac or Windows PC in order to install the new software.

iphone fail, wp7 fail, android framantation fail, no thanks

i’ll stick with my pre 2

    • i told u so.com

yup I have my converted Palm pre plus running on sprint, and still havent seen anything that can perform like webos. Ive had a EVO and Iphone before and must say even with outdated hardware, and software it still runs laps around all other OS’s on the market. With the homebrew community too, that gives us everything imaginable (also HP donating 10k to homebrew and supporting the hacker community) and the Pre 3 coming soon the fastest phone on the market HP/Palm Webos is taken over

        lol. BURN.

So an update to get more updates later on? That is so Microsoft. Can’t even get the delivery mechanism right. Fail.

Yo dawg, we heard you liked updates so we made an update for your update so you could update for your update.

The same two people who were filmed at Mall of America on February 10th; they probably were trading in their Windows Mobile 7 phones for iPhones. Microsoft gave the rest of the units away at various corporate functions, allegedly.

Wow, I don’t know why everyone is being so harsh here… Everyone seems to have forgotten how many updates it took Apple to release their version of cut and paste.

Not everyone has to use the same OS. :P

    • Colongione

Yea you are correct but that was a couple of years ago and if Microsoft wanted to hit the market with a outstanding product to compete with IOS and ANdroid it needed to have all the bells and whistles ready to go….they don’t have a product like the IPHONE and its 2011…come on they could have done better then this.

The point is, my dear MS fanboy, that WP7 has failed to deliver (again) what iPhone has already delivered. Why should anyone switch from the most stable platform i.e. Apple to the most unstable OS in history i.e. MS? What has MS got to offer? A monopoly over Nokia like they had a monopoly over IBM, Dell and Compaq?

      • Anonymous

‘What has MS got to offer?’

        TILES, and lots of em’!!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

Ya, except that even Apple figured out that cut-and-paste is very important. For MS to roll backwards on that, they’re not even living in the same universe, again.

So does this even fix the Yahoo issue? Or does this break their NoDonut rule?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha………..

I guess it’s Windows Mobile after all, maybe Steve Ballmer is upset that he can’t ‘copy and paste’ some hair on that reflective globe resting atop his neck.

I said back in July that Windows Mobile 7 was going to suck and be crap; Windows Mobile is all about devolution.
Now, all of you who stuck by Windows can all go play with your damn tiles.

I don’t mind an update to be able to update correctly! What’s worse? That….or stuff like the HTC/Sprint fiasco concerning updating the Hero a year or so ago???

What I do mind though is that if I were to get a W7 phone, I’d have to use my computer to update it! That…..I dislike that!!! That’s the whole purpose of a SMARTPHONE. It’s suppose to be a mini-computer for your on-the-go needs. This doesn’t make it so.

  • @j_nathaniel

So, I guess I am even happier that I sold my HD7. It is time for them to update their web browser as well…how about full screen in portrait mode? The ides that to update the phone I MUST plug into a computer is seriously annoying. I don’t even like the idea of that on the iPad.

    Big Microsoft fan.

    No Copy/Paste.

    Boo. Fail.

    • Chut Pata

MS does not get it. When there is a product in a market for a few years, and has passed it teething problems i.e. data-hogging, antenna-gate etc, then you need to bring in a product that is visibly superior to it, or considerably cheaper than it. The other option is to offer them an alternate approach like Android did, or Blackberry has.

Now show me somthing iOS, Android, and BB does not have. You can’t make me buy something because it is MS. I buy MS-Windows because the only other choice is iOS which is on Apple hardware only, and Apple hardware is beyond my pocket. Here my alternate to iOS is Android and Blackberry. Why should I accept MS?

Copy & Paste is slated for first two weeks of march. Why complain about a small patch to get ready for said “real” updates? If there’s a bug fix ect why whine about them getting it onto your phones? gd people cry a lot.

It’s as if they aren’t even trying.

lol and I thought Engadget folks were terrible. Internets, you never fail to amuse me. :)

what…an update for an update….thats just cruel…ms just release the main updates already, thats what ppl want, and p.s u r no apple

  • JustAPhoneUser

Wow, seriously people, we all know that Samsung makes junk for smartphones. They never got GPS working on the Vibrant phones, they bricked a whole slew of Canadian smartphones with their latest update and they took 7+ months to deliver the Android 2.2 update to their longing customers. This is all Samsung. WP7 is a nice alternative to what is out their now. It is slick, fluid and easy to use. I cant wait for the updates, but I LOVE my WP7 phone. It really is nicer to use then the Iphone, but tell that to a A**** fanboy

    • Anon

Agreed. WP7 is so nice to use, yet there are so many negative comments. Luckily the folks tha matter, eg Nokia, (caugh caugh) Samsung, HTC, LG, T-mobile, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, etc. all seem to be supporting this great platform. That is a lot more success then google had out of the gate. As for apple — you could sell their fanboys just about anything.

+1 for happy with Windows Phone. I would like multi-tasking and MORE api access, a bit more like android api’s. At least let me access the camera directly as a programmer, but seriously I am sure they will do all of this stuff SOON, and the OS is off to a great start. MS did all of this work in two years, and apple was at least 3 years plus in the making when they launched the original appless IOS. Android was a messy bucket of bolts when it was released. I had a G1, and it had so many bugs it barley worked. WP7 was actually a decent user experience out of the gate.
