Redbox clarifies plans for subscription-based streaming Netflix rival

Services

In a meeting with analysts, Redbox President Mitch Lowe reaffirmed the Coinstar-owned company’s plans to launch a Netflix “Watch Instantly” competitor this year. Coinstar CEO Paul Davis first confirmed the forthcoming service last year during an earnings call, though he would not specify whether the company’s Internet streaming service would utilize an all-you-can-eat pricing model or and a la carte model. Lowe has now confirmed that the service will be subscription-based, but he did not indicate price points for the service. Redbox currently owns and operates a large network of unmanned DVD rental kiosks located throughout the country. These self-service kiosks, which are stocked with new releases and popular recent titles, allow customers to rent DVDs for as little as $1. Redbox still has not revealed a partner for its upcoming streaming service, though rumors suggest Amazon may be the most likely candidate.

physical dvds are dead technology, what are they gonna do with all those dvds and kiosks

20+ million behind nflx, not happening

Physical media ain’t dead yet, but in 5 years it will be. The Hollywood types and the music industry want streaming so you can’t rip copies for your friends or upload to torrent sites.

sell them after the demand has phased out. some people will still prefer the higher quality, lower priced, more universal, uncompressed dvd. bluray is an overpriced scam until all new movies are shot in hd and older movies are remastered by qualified technicians, as a dvd dump of 35 mm film to dvd shows the limitation of the capturing, analog quality, noise, sampling rate of original non-remastered video and aidio.

    Your mother is dead technology.

They need to allow for 7.99 streaming unlimited-no blu ray titles and 9.99 for unlimited recent and blu-ray titles. That would win my heart over and dump netflix. But I am sure netflix would probably implement an early termination fee. But of course.

I’ve never seen a chick that looks that good at Wal-Mart, renting from Redbox. Now if she were 5 feet tall, weight 250, covered in zits, and smelling like cheese…well ya…I could believe that.

That’s because she’s not at Walmart. Look a little closer at the basket. It’s a grocery store – great place to pick up bored MILFs and new-to-the-area, hot 20-somethings. :)

I’ll keep that in mind…I’ll ask if I can squeeze their melons to see if their ripe.

Redbox is a great company! That’s awesome that they’ll compete against Netflix. I’d be interested.

It still amazes me that in this day & age there are still some people who do not pirate movies off of the Internet.

If you don’t have a fast internet connection then it takes forever! Especially blu-ray movies.

The more competition is great news for consumers. I’m a fan of NetFlix (Customer for many years).. but… bring it on :)

They have a lot of catching up to do if they wantvto compete in the streaming market with Netflix. Every device I own natively supports Netflix. Wd media player. Apple tv. iPod. iPad. iPhone. Xbox. Ps3. Pc. MacBook. Bouetooth player. Sony tv …… Netflix needs to offer us more then 6 devices lol.

Why is she looking at the recent releases non-interactive printed out and lit from behind by fluorescent tubes display and blindly pressing a selection on the touchscreen?

ppppffffftttttt…. Redbox sucks balls. they always have the shittiest movies and they never have special features on them. redbox is gay. waste of time. would NEVER use them again for ANYTHING. would be in their best interest to sell out to netflix. i will never cancel netflix. at least their selection is getting much better, redbox is for poor people.
