RIM, TAT show off gorgeous BlackBerry PlayBook apps at MWC [video]

Software

RIM might have the enterprise market squarely in its sights with the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, but the sleek device is hardly all business. At Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona, recent RIM acquisition The Astonishing Tribe was on hand to show off two applications built to demo some of the QNX-powered PlayBook’s capabilities. And as can only be expected from TAT-born apps, they’re stunning. The first, Scrapbook, is a scrapbooking app with a playful look and some terrific 3D UI effects. The second, Aura, allows users to control the weather and features some nifty accelerometer-controlled physics. Hit the break for two video demonstrations.

I can’t wait to get it. I personally think it may be the best Tablet out or coming out………It should of been called the “BlackBook” just to stay with the whole BlackBerry theme

    • Anonymous

Agreed. Although I am looking forward to trying out Honeycomb and some of the new Motorola/Samsung tablets, I think I will be getting the Playbook. I like the size (10 inch tablets are too close to my Vaio Z to be worth while) the UI is great, Flash addition is handy, the specs are good (HDMI out!), the price will be in line with the iPad and it looks as though there will be a ton of Apps too (last rumored to be around 5000 or so apps at launch).

cant wait to see… the Playbook UI by TAT

    • Anonymous

If you’ve seen WebOS, you’ve seen the Playbook UI already. It’s only surprising that HP hasn’t sued them yet.

      • Nuff_skillz

Relax troll. Sued RIM on what grounds? Well you’re at it maybe Apple shall file a complaint against every phone manufacture for using rows of icons on a touch screen.
As they may look the same they are different.

      • RudyH

        WebOS is 6.0…QNX is 6.1
        MUCH MUCH different animal

      • Anon

I suppose the Linux community should sue HP (Palm) for stealing compiz and kwin effects too then.

First to announce and last to market, typical RIM. How about let us buy the damn thing rather than talk us to death about it for months.

    • Anonymous

No! We’ll just talk about it, and you’ll like it! We’re RIM, bitches!

……….we can buy this thing when? Along with some others comments. Just give us a price and a date.

I thought this is a tablet with focus on businesses and power users? Looks more like a children toy…

    • QNX Please

I guess you failed to watch the SAP integration apps already demoed.

QNX seem an amazing OS, keep it coming..Viva Playbook!

  • Anonymous

instead of talking can you just say when it going to be release? before I am going to buy something ealse.

  • Donnydon

Honestly i dont get it why would someone pay this much for a TABLET when you can get a much better laptop for the same price?????

    • QNX Please

Tell that to the 10 million+ iPad owners that bought an enlarged iTouch for the price of a laptop. Tablets have their place, mainly in the corporate world, health and education, maybe some sweet military uses aswell. As for home use, I have no idea why someone would want one over a laptop.

*sigh* Another day, another RIM video and still no Playbook in the stores (or in the hands of reviewers).

Yes, RIM, we get it. The Playbook will cure cancer and make the blind see……if you ever launch the damn thing.

    • zukidrvr

From day one, they said it will launch by the end of Q1. That’s next month. Nothing’s changed. Prices start under $500.

  • Todd

    This looks awesome!

  • http://justinpaine.com xxdesmus

release the damn thing already …at the right price. geez.

  • Anonymous

Intomobile released an amazing 5 minute PlayBook/TAT demo video. Go check it out. It shows the scrapbook app, 3D output onto HDTV, and in my opinion the coolest app demo so far “Frontrunner” which is demoed last in the video (can also be found on CrackBerry)

Zach Epstein….. thank you for just reporting the news and not saying something stupid!

HEY YOU…. YEAH YOU OTHER BGR EMPLOYEE, TAKE A LESSON FROM THIS GUY!

woah 4 touches AT THE SAME TIME?!! seriously, the screen is too small for this app, 7 inch fail.

    • Geez

Lol. The definition of an idiot. Hasn’t even touched the product and decided it’s a fail.

      • Anonymous

nah, the definition of an idiot is anyone who thinks this will succeed. lemme guess your a symbian developer? stay free fool.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZX7I3VN423YBFEWTEQOQ5JR5ME Retro

        you’re ignorant :)

    • Retireat55

you are an idiot – if 7 inches is too small, why are there so many 7″ portable dvd players out there? why are there 6″ e-readers out there? why don’t people make 10″ GPS units? People want portability….7″ tablets are good for that…

  • max

Can’t wait for RIM job morons to pay $49.99 for an app.7″ screen.30″ across.20″ border.7″ diagonal view space. Morons.

    • http://caspan.com Caspan

Says that guys that cannot even construct a sentence! WTF did you just write? I have no idea

    • Drew

Huh?? Was there like 15 periods in that sentence?? W.T.F??

    • uCosom

Max, I think your brain is running on the “min” number of neurons essential for life to continue.

  • JB

ok, this is ridiculous. RIM has been announcing/upgrading/demoing/introducing/creating next generations of this product since September of 2010. And yet not one of them has made it to market yet. It’s a complete joke. What ever happened to companies announcing a product and then releasing it?

    • http://caspan.com Caspan

People are so dumb! Do you have any idea what it must take for a major company like RIM to adopt a brand new OS and have people accept it and develop for it. This takes time and RIM has said Q1 and has never changed that! If you are so upset that RIM talks to its people to show what they are doing then go warship your Apple let’s not say anything and screw people over cause they just bought the old version 2 months ago! That’s call cheap and is so Apple!

      • JB

Yes, I know exactly what it takes actually. And they should have had the vast majority of it done before ever announcing it. And I’m not knocking this product so I’m not sure why you’re vehemently defending it. We don’t have any way to judge the actual product because it hasn’t shipped yet! I’m knocking RIM for continuously touting a product that they haven’t provided a ship date or price for yet.

      • http://caspan.com Caspan

Oh so you know how hard it is to go from nothing to 60 that’s what RIM has had to do! Take something with 0 support and 0 application and make it production ready in 6 months I guess RIM can program app for it so when it comes out there is nothing to use on it. Or they are able to get devs on board and have applications ready for it. I don’t think you have a clue!

      • zukidrvr

From the day one: it will ship by the end of Q1. That’s next month. It will start at under $500.

What’s changed? I seem to remember Steve Jobs demoing the iPhone months before it was available.

        Sheesh.

      • Anonymous

        Q1, under $500

        Happy?

  • BerryKing

Yep RIM you did it again!!! All you fagdroids and iCrap lovers, EAT THAT BITCHES!!!

    • http://caspan.com Caspan

LOL I like what you’re saying but I wouldn’t be that forward. I like to yell after :)

  • Anonymous

Very original concepts for apps i have to say well done TAT

  • Anonymous

Ahhhhh. What would the day have been without some more RIM/TAT vaporware. I wonder if TAT actually has a file titled “Stuff that will NEVER ship”.

    • Drew

Wow, you are inexcusably retarded… Please excuse yourself from the room. Thanks.

  • Anonymous

No, Drew. I understand that TAT’s ideas very seldom actually turn into a real product. Do some research for yourself before you insult somebody. I agree TAT has a lot of cool ideas, but the fact is those ideas never seem to make it into a shipping device.

    • uCosom

The fact is that their ideas DO get into devices that ship. They don’t sell to the end-user. How do you think they’ve been staying in business for all these years? You think that Siemens, Motorola, Samsung etc… have paid large sums of money for them just to look pretty? Their ideas go into real products. Guaranteed.

  • Anonymous

The anticipation for this device is overwhelming. I suspect it has already ‘sold’ to enterprise and they’re just waiting for Q1 to ship. Don’t know why this is so hard for so many to grasp – RIM stated in September the device would ship in Q1 and would be priced competitively – they’ve never said otherwise and analysts have priced it around $499. Watch sales exceed analyst targets of $10m. Size is perfect. I don’t want to hold a maxipad on the subway or in the bistro. Or in the police cruiser, operating room, cockpit, army tank or any of the other enterprise customers this device has locked down. Release it already? Well, we’ve had some tablet releases – HP, Samsung – how great are they? Taking a bite out of the apple? Not likely. The Playbook – the perfect name by the way, so NOT a pad in any way, shape or form – will turn its predecessor into apple sauce.

  • Mblank12345

That’s badass…..QNX+TAT looks quite compelling, I was waiting for the IPAD2 today which looks pretty good but I don’t know if I’m sold on it comparing after seeing this!
