Motorola CEO defends XOOM tablet’s $800 price tag

Tablets

At Mobile World Congress on Wednesday, Motorola Mobility chief executive Sanjay Jha came to the defense of the company’s decision to price its first Android tablet at $800. The Motorola XOOM will be a flagship Android tablet when it launches in the near future, and Motorola has slapped on a flagship price tag. With 3G connectivity, the 32GB XOOM will be $70 more expensive than an Apple iPad with the same amount of storage. “We felt that our ability to deliver 50Mbps would justify the $799 price point,” Jha told reporters at Mobile World Congress. “It is 32GB with 3G and a free upgrade to 4G. Being competitive with iPad is important. We feel that from the hardware and capabilities we deliver, we are at least competitive and in a number of ways better.” Of note, the 3G XOOM will reportedly also require users to purchase at least one month of cellular data service in order to unlock Wi-Fi connectivity — ostensibly adding another $30 onto the price of the XOOM and making it a full $100 more expensive than the comparable iPad model. The Wi-Fi-only XOOM will be priced in line with the comparable iPad model at $600.

The easiest way to get the pricing down on this stuff is to hold off buying…. Seems to me, if they can build a netbook and sell for mid $250 – 400 new (less refurb) then a proper saturated market level would be the same. I am waiting for the refurbs to start after the newbies have spent the money and had the 2nd thoughts.

I waiting for the “next” iPad whether it’s from Apple, Motorola, Dell, HP, whomever. I’ll pay whatever it takes if it (1) works, (2) has wifi, and (3) accepts an SD card. USB or MicroUSB would be a bonus to plug in a 4G modem. Cameras and watching movies/tv are nice but don’t really mean a lot to me. And I need 10 of them.

Without a model and price to compare with the 16GB iPad model, they aren’t going to sell nearly as many of them. When I got my iPad in Aug. of last year, all the Best Buys within a 100 mile radius were out of 16GB models, but had other models in stock. Xoom looks great, but they priced themselves out of the market for many people, especially when it comes to a Motorola device.

How much does it cost to actually make this Xoom?

Let me see, I can buy an iPad which is built by Apple which is known for innovation and quality OR I can spend $100 more and buy from Motorola which is known for, hmmmm….let me think about it.

Come ON ! If anyone wants to compete with Apple they better not be priced the same because Apple will win that battle. Competitors have add more features and be priced at least $200 less. The Motorola CEO is an idiot.
