mobile

Verizon Wireless announced on Tuesday that it has launched its next-generation 4G LTE network in the Detroit, MI market. Touting average data rates of between 5 and 12 Mbps down and between 2 and 5 Mbps up, Verizon Wireless’ LTE network looks to add the element of speed to its dependable nationwide cellular network. “Metro Detroit: Welcome to the future,” said John Granby, Verizon Wireless’ president of the region, in a statement. “Our advanced technology is changing the way we all work and play. Today, it gives us the ability to move large files faster and soon enjoy smooth mobile video conferencing. But, this is only the beginning. It’s not about what 4G can do for you. Rather, it’s about what do you want or need it to do?” Hit the break for Verizon Wireless’ full press release.

The expansion – the first since the company’s initial 4G LTE launch in December 2010 – means businesses and consumers may experience speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s industry-leading 3G network. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, laptop users experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

“Metro Detroit: Welcome to the future,” said John Granby, president –Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky Region, Verizon Wireless. “Our advanced technology is changing the way we all work and play. Today, it gives us the ability to move large files faster and soon enjoy smooth mobile video conferencing. But, this is only the beginning. It’s not about what 4G can do for you. Rather, it’s about what do you want or need it to do?”

Since 2007, when Verizon Wireless jump-started the global 4G LTE ecosystem with its selection of LTE for its 4G technology, the company has developed deep partnerships to spearhead a broad LTE ecosystem, including the LTE Innovation Center in Waltham, Mass., and an Application Innovation Center, soon to open in San Francisco.

In December 2010, Verizon Wireless launched its 4G LTE network in 38 major metropolitan markets and 60 commercial airports across the country as well as in parts of north Oakland and Macomb counties. Much of metro Detroit has been impacted by spectrum interference with a Canadian TV station that has since been resolved, allowing the company to make this significant early expansion.

The company’s 4G LTE network will cover two-thirds of the U.S. population by mid-2012, and by the end of 2013 the company will offer its 4G LTE network from coast to coast – everywhere it offers 3G today.

Speed is nice… but it doesn’t mean crap until they disclose how much more it will cost us.

Wtf? Detroit is a rotted city with an economy in shambles. Why not release it in DC/MD/VA? Rather, you release it where 80% of Detroit has no fucking job! FU VErizon!

Real original, bash on Detroit. First of all, there are a lot of proud working Americans in Detroit and surrounding suburbs. Second of all, if it weren’t for Detroit, you wouldn’t be here. Arsenal of Democracy ring a bell?!?!?

    • Dream

Um dude we already have LTE in the DMV Plus Wimax, And HSPA+ so let MI bask in the sun a.

    • Sal Dawood

That is true to some extent… But that does not mean that Michigan is not going to get better. It might take few years. Michigan is as good as other states. I <3 MI.

    • booyah!

Damn dude, 80% of the population out of work so they dont deserve LTE. I guess its cool your still employed huh? No chance of that statement coming back and biting you in the as$. Some a$$holes are always trying to ice skate uphill.

    • DTownTony

Anybody who doesn’t like Detroit is either a pus*y, or a fat fu*k…or as you prove, both. You fat fu*king puss*y

    • detroitlivesagain

hey scumbag, no one cares about your country ass bumpkin areas.. fucking fat hillbillies like you dont need fast “instanet”. more and more people are finding jobs but its a building process. next time you want to be a jackass about detroit, try it face to face with some of their citizens, im sure your fat face in the ground will feel real nice after you get stomped

  • Confused

Ummm, why is this news?????? With those slow speeds, this should be buried somewhere under #FAIL. Their 3G network was trash and so will their lte

    • Joel

Maybe trash where you live but I consider 2+ Mbps a strong 3G connection. Good luck with your half developed AT&T 3G network and quarter developed “4G” Only Verizon has true nationwide 3G and soon to be 4G coverage

      • Confused

2+ mbps looks like a joke when compared to other companies that offer 3 or 4 times that speed. And at the end of the day it comes down to location, where I live AT&T and T-Mobile work perffectly fine and offer speeds faster than that on their HSPA+ networks. Big Red’s “4G” won’t be impressive at all

      • http://twitter.com/VDubb722 Vic Webb

I’m confused. I don’t know if you’re idiots or trolling, but it’s 2-5Mbps on the UPLOAD. Download is average of 5-12Mbps…

      • Anonymous

Sounds like someone works for AT&T, Btw I’ve used an AT&T 4g data card in a 4g market, I’m pretty sure websites load faster on dial-up

  • phonefan

The question will be… how will it be on battery life? Sprint’s wimax kills battery life.
Wich brings up another point. What happened to Sprint 4G?. You here nothing about them rolling out new cities any more. Got to give Verizon credit. They are really rolling out LTE very fast!.

    • Anonymous

sprints 4g is on a much higher spectrum (its in the 2000s) while Verizon’s LTE is 700mhz, so lower the spectrum the less energy or power required to push the signal to your phone, basically better battery life with Verizon 4g

put your hands up for Detroit.. a lovely city

  • http://twitter.com/Syk0Matik420 Beefy McBigDick

why in detroit? its a fuckin ghost town. theres like 15 families left there, and 4 houses that are still standing with electricity and running water. detroit isnt exactly a wealthy area. its 99% ghetto trash and we all know ghetto folk dont pay bills anyway. so verizon, i ask you again, WHY DETROIT?

    • Stevenbo33

Fuck u bitch u don’t anything about Detroit

    • Guest92

this beefy fat guy is so dump…has no idea about detroit metro…obviously u never even heard of Grosse pointe areas, bloomfield hills etc since we’re just generalizing here..but speaking individually, how dumb do you have to be to think motorcity only has 15 families left? Seriously dude, I don’t care how much exaggeration there is on your comment, but you’re one sad fuck…starting from your name, MCBIGDICK- you must have a small one cause if you didn’t you wouldn’t commercialize it on the net but actually use it in real life.

Get a grip ..and ask yourself, how much pussy have i gotten in my life time..again don’t ask verzion why detroit, but how much ass u gotten through ur lifetime..prob none
