Samsung takes aim at iPod touch with Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0, 5.0

mobile

On our second spin through the Samsung booth, we noticed something we — in our excitement to see the Galaxy S II and Tab 10.1 — missed yesterday: two Wi-Fi only Galaxy S devices. Dubbed the Galaxy S 4.0 and 5.0, Samsung has set it sights on a popular smaller tablet-alternative, Apple’s iPod touch. Let’s go over the specs…

The smaller of the two, non-cellular Galaxy S models — the 4.0 — sports a 4-inch LCD TFT display, 1GHz Hummingbird processor, front-facing VGA camera, 3.2 megapixel rear-facing camera with 720p video recording (no flash), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 1200 mAh battery, micro-SD card slot (with support for up to a 32 GB card), and Android 2.2.

The 4.0′s big brother — the 5.0 — boasts a 5-inch WVGA display with an 800 x 480-pixel resolution, 1GHz Humming bird processor, front-facing VGA camera, rear-facing 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 2,500mAh battery, micro-SD card slot (support for 32GB cards), and Android 2.2.

Sammy was pretty cheeky when we asked about a price point for the new devices, but company reps were not shy about saying that it would be extremely competitive with the iPod touch. Expect to see the Galaxy S 4.0 and 5.0 in the coming months; until then, have a look at our hands on gallery and let us know what you think.

    Finally…

This makes perfect sense as droids music player is so much more fluid than crApples.

As an Android user, I’d have to disagree. However there are many we can download that are better. DoubleTwist/WinAmp anyone?

      • Scorp

I agree. The native media apps on Androids are ok at best. You have to download like 4 or 5 to find the right one.

    No dual core!?
    :-(

    • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

yeah, bad decision. Next iPhone/iPod’s will all feature dual core this June. I’m sure of it.

Seems like dual core wasn’t really a priority for Samsung this year as many of their devices are not touting it. Maybe by year’s end?

How are you sure of it? You’re not, so stop spewing that BS.

      • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

This is really to both my repliers…. are you both ignorant of the entire marketplace and how Apple moves forward?

I am an apple hater and absolutely refuse to buy their products. However, I am not so much a fanboy that I cannot accept that Apple makes decent products and always focuses on the next wave of technologies.

iPhone4 launched with a cutting edge processor last June. Along with a still best of class screen, front camera barely matched by others recently (except HTC – focusing on US market), among other software improvements. Right after, the next iPod touch device based on this model launched with all the same tech.

By the end of this year, nearly all Android (and probably other OS based) smart phones will be running dual cores. Apple has already rumored to not be including LTE (4G) into its next iPhone. So what’s left?

        Technology improvements.

This is where they’ll jump up. You’ll see a slightly improved screen, dual core, better graphics etc. Along with a few minor software upgrades this June. Its obvious and I can’t believe anyone could not see this coming.

You two, and those that liked your comments, are just being narrow-minded and probably just fanboy’s.

      • TERRor

Yeah, sure, because Apple is known for supplying fast processors and an over abundance top shelf hardware on it’s devices.

      • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

Yeah, sure, because iPhone4′s processor wasn’t cutting edge last June and its graphics chip isn’t still better than almost any other phone on the market.

For more, read response above, its directed to you as well as Hank.

Bottomline: Its about brand loyalty. People would buy iPhones if they dropped calls if you held them funny. Wait. That happened.

How about we all focus on the phones and handhelds that we enjoy and stop interrupting other people’s feelings of glee and euphoria.

i really think fandroids are creepier than fanboys… you guys get real touchy, its just a phone.

Both are packaging Hummingbird SoCs…just 6 months ago it was a hit in the Galaxy S.

Android doesn’t need dual-core…the GUI needs to get accelerated in the SoC GPU.

Wow… stats look great! Come on Sammy, price at or at below iPod touch… “extremely competitive” isn’t $200 above Apple’s prices.

  • Trevor M. Odiorne

Hopefully that 5.0 will be $249-299. That would be a great deal!

  • http://twitter.com/ChazClout ChazClout

    That screen looks great!

  • LincKraker

I know it seems strange but do these have built-in GPS? i’m looking for an android tablet device to use as a carPC. The 5 inch model would be kinda perfect IF it had built-in GPS. I could make due with a bluetooth GPS dongle but i’m holding out for built-in GPS.

    • Anonymous

Doesn’t GPS come on the 3G chip?

      • http://twitter.com/Culex316 Robert Dunn

Not necessarily. Some Qualcomm chipsets integrate it along with the apps + baseband processor but it can also be integrated as a separate chip.

    • Stammencode

I hear that yes, they will have GPS.

  • Anonymous

These looks great no doubt about it. The pricing will be the determining factor.

I think Apple has nothing to worry about. Why is it so damn thick.

    • http://rmbo47.myopenid.com/ rmbo47

I agree. This thing is so much bigger than the iPod Touch. It may be competitive in another arena, but not as a pocket-sized device. I’d never carry one of those, especially while I’m using an Evo.

  • http://twitter.com/xsoverload Kyle Kim

    Hardware looks … promising.

Not so sure about the software part but I haven’t looked in the Market to see if there were better players available. The stock Android player is … lacking.

  • http://DonnyGamble.com Donny Gamble

I am already getting sick of all of these iPod and iPad knock offs

    • Nutsinyourface

Why? Because competition is bad and doesn’t force others to be innovative and cut prices?

GTFO of here, Apple nut hugger.

  • Anonymous

These look pretty slick, and while definitely a good idea, why is it 5x as thick as the iPod Touch?

    • Stammencode

The 4″ is like 1mm thicker. WTF are you talking about.

  • FUUUUUUUUUU

    samsung fail…

  • Anonymous

    Another win for DROID!

Finally. Now the Zune won’t be all by itself at the Wal-Mart electronics department. All kidding aside, it blows my mind why it’s taken so long for a top-tier Android reseller (Samsung, Moto, HTC) to get out a competitor to the iPod Touch. I love toys and I’d love to have one so I could fiddle with it, but no one wanted to make one before now???

  • LookLively

Beautiful. Looks like a giant cell phone. I’m waiting for someone to make a tablet that would act like a portable hard drive / PC. You plug in a keyboard and monitor at home, then carry it with you during the day.

    • http://rmbo47.myopenid.com/ rmbo47

They already do. It’s called the iPad. :)

      • LookLively

If you’re using an iPad as a portable computer, you’re either 8yrs old or running a flier business using Microsoft Publisher.

I’m talking about a FULL Hard Drive/ PC that just happens to be portable. That can run say for example Adobe Creative Suite 5, Master Collection or handle off-site computations for an engineer studying pollution in the Fl. everglades. Not a high end ereader.

      • Stammencode

The ipad has the OS of a phone and the physical shape of a laptop. None of the advantages, all of the disadvantages. It’s a toy.

Computer… pfffft. Unless you’re able to use visual studio on it, (heck, you can’t compile ANYTHING) it’s a toy.

i dont think there will be an ipod touch competitor until android makes some that can realistically compete with iTunes.

  • Scorp

Honestly most people don’t want a device that’s supposed to primarily be an MP3/video player that’s not an iPod. iPod has become synonymous with MP3 player. Again, companies trying to capitalize on the market that Apple has opened up. Of course Apple isn’t the creator of all things but they make a product marketable and easy to use for regular people. When are these companies going to come up with their own ideas that’s not a knock off of an Apple product?

    • Breeb

      Hi. I exist. F*** you.

  • Scorp

No one is going to pay much money for something that’s an iPod wannabe.

  • Anonymous

It’ll make a good audiophile portable if it has the same hardware as the SGS.

  • http://www.tecrux.com/ Usman

any idea for how much it will cost ?

  • zps

where the F is the built in storage? sorry, but “supports 32gb card” doesn’t cut it. when will one of the players realize that many of us want more than 32, more than 64… funny, that i had an 80gb zen YEARS ago.

  • Youngjboy

I am an Droid user, but FAIL….bottom line is that Android does not excel at Music and Video. You don’t even get an EQ in the stock music player. It will get you by in a pinch but one has to download additional music/video apps to make it a decent player. With the stock Android players, it can not compete with an iPod
